Fault Lines - Anaheim: A tale of two cities

- If there is one city in the world where you might expect to find happiness, it is Anaheim, California. It is the home of Disneyland, the second most popular amusement park in the world. From Anaheim Disney has for decades been selling an image of phantasy to millions of visitors every year. But over the summer, anger that had been growing in communities living in the shadows of this multi-billion dollar tourist industry began spiralling out of control. In July 2012, two young Latino men were shot and killed by Anaheim police. What followed was some of the worst civil unrest this city has ever seen. Protests against police brutality were met with riot-clad gear police and rubber bullets, further fuelling violence and bringing national attention to the home of Disneyland. The images shocked the country but left unanswered questions: Why did it happen? Will it happen elsewhwere in the US? And are there two Anaheims? Fault Lines examines the underlying causes of the recent unrest in Anaheim.
They're missing something big here, a lot of these Mexican neighborhoods have been here since the '20's, '30s, and '40s and they've been policed and criminalized for almost as long. It's true that there has been an increase in immigration that has seen these neighborhoods grow but they have been established for decades. I also thought that Mexicans living in Orange County were a new trend but we have deep seated history in this County that has been erased and glossed over through gentrification. If you want to see how far back it goes you can start your research with the Mendez v. Westminster case and work your way from there. They keep saying it's a new population when it's not, it's just been ignored and swept under the rug.
lol Yeah it's a miracle they didn't rename San Clemente & Laguna to English names
Nah immigrations hasn’t increase
Once they had enough white immigrants in America then it became a problem ahahaha
I agree with you bro my neighborhood got wiped out as well South St. / Dakota St.
Sonny in Phoenix There are lots of other Spanish-named places on California because it was a part of Mexico.
They're also missing that Orange County WAS Mexico until we stole it.
i don't like how they have to label everything by race as in "wealthy white communities" I'm white and i live in the biggest gang territory in anaheim
Anaheim is a toilet, always has been
***** travelers
The Liberal Agenda uses Identity Politics
and a lot of the cops are black and brown
I'm from Anaheim and I remember when all this happened. I was a young teenager when it happened so I still had so much to learn. But seeing it now, I can really appreciate the journalism. It's really on point. There are many areas around southern California and not just Anaheim that lead to the creation of gangs. How do Americans expect them not to form when they relegate immigrants to the margins which leads to a concentration of poverty? I myself flirted with that lifestyle when I was young but thankfully never ended up in it because of the people I had in my life. It also doesn't help that American society has been prejudiced against us. Times have gotten a little better but a lot of us here, in the lower class, struggle with our self-esteem.
I got out of calif 30 yrs ago glad I did
It's not even ghetto in Anaheim, SANTA ANA ON THE OTHER HANDD
larry miller this foo ur dumb
Me too. Left in 2007. Getting ghetto by the day
Me too! 👍 I still feel terrible for what's going on and for all the people that suffer this "condition", prevalent in the whole country
🤣🤣🤣
Once the government starts saying & doing things to "protect you" or "for your safety",you are going to get so screwed.
This was not talked about when it happened, and I watch You tube all the time
It's a fact. Most gangs are Latino in Anaheim. If anything they need more cops. I don't like cops personally but they are needed in these areas. Also these people know nothing about how bad it really is .

Let's talk!
I’m Mexican but chose not to be an ignorant one. I lived and grew up in a low income neighborhood but I got educated, dressed and spoke like a decent human being not like a low life. I was never “harassed” or looked down by the police. Don’t see any investigative journalist asking those ignorant thugs why they refuse to do the same and get educated???
ripsaa2003 yo personal experience does not speak for everyone as a whole.Stop trying to devalue people’s experiences by using your own experiences.
A lot of people seem to be missing the point... Its not about who's gang is the toughest or if Anaheim is hard or whatever. its about how laws are being engineered and used to control a community. Its about how America, the country that prides itself on "freedom" is being oppressed.
I live in NY and despite all the shit here, all the people killed here, I'll tell you what, if Anaeheim is really this bad, where people can't even protest in their own neighborhoods, can't even go outside in groups of 3 or more, especially men. Where the majority is a apartheidized Latino underclass, then it's worse than here. Wtf else should I've expected of the capital of Orange fucking County?! Anaheim's clearly more of a police state even than Bloombergville, It's fucked up.
some people fear our country will be like what happened to the former Yugoslavia.
This is why I have a gun!
Same.
I left in 1975 and although I was born there grew up there I'm glad I left. However I hate how it's changed.
How did it change?
I'm from Anaheim and let me tell you, this is not the reality in Anaheim. Most of this was over blown. " this was turning into a warzone"?? These people don't know what war is. This police department is mostly latino btw and many kids did aspire to join gangs. It was so bad that students i went to middle school with had rumbles after school in the parks.
Your whole statement is contradicting itself lol
@@DiegoHernandez-zw5cg you think Anaheim was a warzone
?
@@KevinL714 on the East side and west side yeah it was and still is actually
@@DiegoHernandez-zw5cg then I know for a fact that you've never been in war.
In this video, no one ask the lady advocate, what is her plan to combat crime and fix the gang invested neighborhood. So, just tell the police don't patrol the area and see what happens. In this specific neighborhood, who are the ones committing the most crimes? It is a rhetorical question. I would also ask those young men being featured in this piece, what do they suggest the City leaders do and how should the police respond to crime in their community.
"Militaristic Police" ? ... Real soldiers who fought face to face front line combat against killers are probably laughing in contempt at these cowards shooting unarmed civilians !
I never knew about this and I live in anaheim
AlJazeera makes good docs. Thanks
I love how Faultlines actually asks hard questions. You guys kick ass.
no they don't they're biased af they will only show one side of the story fairly and often times will misrepresent what happened pure leftist propaganda
@@Will-tc7kz I was talking about the interviewers not throwing softballs and demanding answers. Get out of your right wing media bubble and see how bad we have failed in America thanks to hyper individualism and capitalism.
@@Will-tc7kz lol Right-wingers are lunatics. Everything you believe is based on race.
This angers me. That these seemingly well- and soft-spoken, seemingly gentle, young Hispanic men are being bullied and killed by this police force. Now I am asking for help here; WHY don't I feel this same empathy for the black youth who are experiencing similar injustices in cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and Baltimore....? Please, I am looking for answers within side myself and I fall short.
Criminals is Uniform. Modern day gestapos...Corrupt cops who think they are above the law.
I lived in guinida ln where the murder took place.
. real dangerous.. Seen stabbing, shooting etc
+miguel Cardenas yuuup ):
My girls family lives on palm and ball, nice neighborhood but theres a war between the gangs and police, its a shame
@@susanneskadetsinnverdilsek5901 palm st or palm way?
I was born and raised in Anaheim and it's not that bad like people say it is depends on what part you live in
I feel for our people in Anaheim, lets make a change, lets just do it. With integrity and honesty. I have a goal to represent this city RIGHTeously. As a minority coming from this community it was sad to see another minority officer have to identify with this kind of mindset. I believe reform comes with good community policing and building an honest rapport with the communities you serve, and the trust will come right back. Harsh on crime policies need to be yielded because progress shows it's not working effectively.
Someone needs to tell the cops around the 24:00 minute mark that they aren't in Tikrit. Seriously their whole get up is laughably outrageous!
went to Anaheim high with home boy i live next to were he died still love my city
If you're not in a gang, stop looking and acting like you're in a gang. Maybe it's not totally fair but you can't be sort of gang-ish and expect the police to easily sort everybody out.
There's no gangs in Anaheim ask Disney Anaheim-Angels Hokey-Ducks Hotels Just don't live the city's grounds
they drove through Ariel and Olinda. thats in FOLKS neighborhood...i used to live there...very very rough neighborhood. before they got served with the gang injunction they used to post up like 30 people on my street everyday
A judge made my nephew claim a gang in order to be released from jail, he called me and said " auntie what gang shall I claim." adjustable justice.
I think I can believe this happened. Orange County is strange. Some places are very fancy like the office parks near Newport Beach or South Coast Plaza and some areas are incredibly shabby. OC used to be a high-tech center so I wonder what happened to that.
ever hear of the depression? those people living on the streets are not campers
What does Lighting a Dumpster on fire help your situation ? Wanting Revenge, Starting a Riot, Destroying your neighborhood, and Looting Will NOT make anything Better. It will only make thing Worse. Wake up People. The best way to fix the problem is to NOT Break the Law to begin with. "Especially when you know that there are some crooked officers out there". Don't get me wrong, They definitely need to do more about these Crooked officers, But Most Officers are GOOD. Don't give them a bad name because of a few. They put there lives on the line everyday for us. GOD BLESS America's Police Officers. Thank You for your service and Stay SAFE !!!
Anaheim is not the only city with these problems...pretty much all of north oc and south la are comprised of poor people in the valleys surrounded by rich people in the hills...
I have roots to Anas but my talent is universal so I don't care were I'm at.
"It ain't where you at but where you about to go."
I like that.
I remeber when it was nice. There is open air drug dealing like Los Angeles. The city is not going to allow it.
I want to say that I was deeply moved by the unflinching honesty demonstrated by the police chief about his shortcomings and the mistakes that were made during the protests. I also completely support the gang unit sargeant who being a latino himself as I am, defends the practice of a common sense profiling. I was born and have lived in the Anaheim area my entire life in medium to low income neighborhoods and I have never been "harassed" by the police. I do not however dress like a gangster.
I read a lot about what is happening. I would like to see some reports on what has improved from the dates of these reports. I am 2021 now this happened in 2012. How is it now? Is it worse or is it better.
I grow up in the hood with gangs all around me and I thank them for showing me what I didn't want to be a dumb a** person i live in Anaheim Hills now and make over 250k a year and I am Latino
El TRI Sorry, i looked back at ur comment and realize i responded to the wrong person. u are right. America doesn't know what's up. i live here, I know
El TRI I was on an indignant tangent...
Im living here too and you motivated me I'm Mexican too!
TheRemix714 uncle tom
I'm making only 20k under you and I hung around gangs.
Dont interfere with my pension.that's the cop most important part of their careers.
The best event held in Anaheim, every summer is the Harvest Crusades at Anaheim Stadium formerly Angels Stadium, or if you are more comfortable with brown skin go to Somebody Loves you with Raoul Ries.
Saw the name Scandalouz and thought of Tupac. Minutes later, I learnt he ( Scandalouz) raps. Yep, makes sense.
People love being the victim, huh?
It's never our own fault... Never.
Even if we walk down the street and we stumble, we all look back to find a way to somehow blame the pavement.
your an idiot!
Facts 💯
Thank you for telling the story many do not know! Anaheim is the worst in terms of how funding in the city gets distributed. You can easily see which parts of the city gets taken care of and which parts gets over looked. Anaheim city officials only care about Anaheim hills and the surrounding area of Disneyland. If you don’t believe me just drive around the small neighborhoods five miles East of Disney.
No matter how you try to justify your actions racial profile is racial profiling.
ok. Where?
I never knew that any of this was going on in Anaheim, be it sensationalized by the media or not. I would assume so since it happens in most cities, but I guess I never noticed since I have family that live in Anaheim Hills.
17:45 this video is not completely inflammatory, but it contains inflammatory content. they boldly claim the people with the expensive houses hold sway over the neighborhood like some shady organization, but where are their voices in this video?
I ain't saying police do everything right, but blaming all the worlds problems on race wont help anyone.
...kinda seems like mexico.
pigs on horses lol
Seems to me thee mad cause the cops won’t let em act like animals
I'm currently, trying to organize a conversation/movement to attack police brutality and the insane power they have.
The police don't seem to realize that they are a gang
They realize it
Yeah but they got the law on their side
I lived a street down from the riot they set my trash can on fire -.-
>-
Poor trash can, it didnt do anything
Not to mention, the psychological tests administered to become a cop ARE A COMPLETE JOKE. I know, I used to score them. ANYONE could pass them.
are those paintball guns at the beginning?
I know what happened @ least I think I know, the homies were talking about it in County. Apparently this has been going since way back according to Flip from La Fabrica, what's up doggy.
I don't like Manuel's mom, she didn't even raise him. I knew him and he was homeless for awhile and she only cares cause she wanted the money
Good hopefully she gets millions and you stay broke and homeless
Little Joker so? She's still gave birth to him, she still loved him, how dare you.
recruit latino police and deploy them all as a community policing effort, wtf is wrong with councils, you need to be on the ground everyday talking to people in the community....
Heartbreaking.
do you live in north korea?
That’s my homie Expo getting carried
The most disturbing thing I learned here is that "gang injunctions" make it illegal in some of the neighborhoods to stand with others in a public place for more than 5 minutes. On top of that, all 40 of the officers involved in local shootings have been cleared of charges. They say the future of America is in California - are we headed for these kind of police state conditions in every US neighborhood?
Not white and wealthy neighborhoods.
Hard to see but that's nothing if I survived the riots in Los Angeles and Anaheim survive this
By the way I think that your caps lock is broken. You should have that looked at.
At 7:45 the officer describes half of the officers I have seen recently.
So that is why choppers are overhead practically everyday. Just the other day, two white cops knocked on my door, "we got a call that there was car damaged done here. There is no damage, i told them, anybody else lives here? They wanted to know.
The cops in city counsel smudgely looking at the speaker.
my sister live on brownwood and valley
It seems to be an open prison and the population are the inmates. I would be moving out of that area.
Was this docu funded by AlJazeera? I find that curious.
Boycott Disney land the city poor and they charge to much to park ur car that shity
The dehuminazation of young, economically poor latinos in Anaheim continues!
Latino is a greek term. Hispanic categorizes us a Spaniard slaves because we belonged to them. Educate yourself
I was born in Anaheim and raised and I live less than a kilometer away so this sad
when the police are in control you are in disney land.
classic signs of a country's demise.
look at history people.
Sitting back silently will not solve the problem. They do it because of who you are, not because of your work ethic or values or anything else.
Another great documentary
I have watched a few of these short vids, and have come to the conclusion, what in God's name is happening in America?
omg this happened when i was 2
and now i am 10
and i am Latino and i know where is City Hall is at
BLACK PEOPLE TO MEXICANS/LATINOS: "WE TOLD YOU SO!" NOW CAN WE UNITE ALREADY!
Si
I like how “skandalous” is tired of being labeled as a gang member... LOLOL WHAT!?!?? How are you confused of why your being targeted by police?
Because the are artists not from a gang 🤦♂️
Oops, I meant the 20:00 mark.
So called black and brown unite we will be the greatest force the world has ever known......
The ugliest maybe
I'm not saying that the city of Anaheim is being run farily... and I'm not in La Habra. Different city.
uhhh no i'm not that stupid. He basically said that if a skater was Latino he would approach him. it was all about race, disguised behind "skater" and "gang member"
This report is amazing.
It's incredible to see how we can find so many contrasts in the called "Land of Opportunities"..... a melting-pot of discrimanation , prejudice and income segregation!
In a months time.
Who provokes and escalates violence more?
The blue line terrorist group. Or
Actual street gangs in the neighborhoods
ha ha budget helicopter? , no tracking camera ,no heat seeking , not even a police sticker,,but hey the binoculars looks almost new:) or is it a unmarked, undercover chopper? ... ha ha ha :)
Night of the long Knives!
He probably had a cell phone camera and they thought it was a gun. That's why they can not find the gun... So the camera is the new gun.
@damartin1503 Lincoln and brookhurst
the interesting thing about this is that most of the police here are also latino
Chief, you called the citizen-protesters outside agitators.
I didn't really understand the Gang Squad Leaders constant reference to......how they dress..... sounds like ANYONE THAT DRESSES A CERTAIN WAY....is AUTOMATICALLY PROFILED AS A GANG MEMBER.
HE"S NOT LOOKING TO SOLVE ANYTHING......MORE LIKE JUSTIFY WHY THEY ARE AS THEY ARE.
On the 21st of July that's my birthday
At first the protesters look like business! The chants, anger, marching for wrongful death? At the end not what the beginning wanted, law suit money made all the desire for justice go away?
Shoulda shot to tha wst. side of anaheim or like some active hoods🤷♂️
But that areas not even active xD
Ese Repek not no more
@@eserepek113 you’re dumb yeah it is. The west side of Anaheim is the most active in all of Anaheim 😂😂
Ur not gonna say at times who yr running with
This is a tough call. I can't see a true right or wrong to either side. did the police mess up, yes, but the police got to do what they got to do.
Expert testimony from Skandalouz. Outstanding reporting.
