Being a professional Modified Hydroplane driver for decades when I seen that run in the open ocean in a 10 foot jet , I knew that was a NO GO ! as even on a smooth day, your going to get the tar beat out of you and at 30 to 40mph your looking at a good 2 1/2 hours of going airborn ! and the human body can't take that much of a beating plus gettin sun baked as well. That big pond is one mean lady !
I've spent a lot of time on the water in small boats in the ocean and so has my brother. So watch the weather, the winds can ruin the seas fast. Tides play a role too and the best shot is to go just before the sun comes up. Its a beautiful thing to be on the water while its rising.

As somebody that has been around boats most of their life. That water really wasn’t that bad for real. Our local lake has water as bad as that. Maybe I’m just used to it idk lol

There are far too many English teachers on here !!!! So many grammatical corrections….. obviously sarcasm and comedic relief doesn’t work as well when written as it does when spoken!!!!
Its rough because the boats are so short they cant cover the wave peaks, the boats dipping in between the waves. Going faster allows the boats to skip across the wave peaks better. The more you know.
Being short is the least of why they are so rough in waves and choppy conditions. Those boats have very little deadrise and no matter how fast you go it isn't going to change. The boats aren't designed for it. If they had a lot more deadrise it would smooth everything out a lot.
@@robcooper3171 That 21 to 26 is measured at the transom. For good performance in bad conditions you want that 21-26 to transition into 48-50 degrees of deadrise at the bow. That is where the good ride comes from. The front half of the hull is what takes the brunt of the impact and where the deadrise is needed most.
@@vandersgarage4682 I totally agree, but one thing to note not all manufacturers will list all the positions of deadrise, just know from experience if the transom falls in that angle typically it will have a nice smooth bow entry. Provided that it is a V-hull
If you try to skip on the wave tops then impeller cavitation becomes a big issue for drive train reliability. Allowing the rpm's to flare/jump between each wave top repeatedly for hours straight would not be very good. If you watch just about any vessel running high speed offshore the captain is constantly having to work the throttle to avoid rpm flares as the prop/impeller loses it's bite in the water when hitting the trough between each wave. In such small craft as Cleet and Chad are running it would be very difficult to keep up the required throttle rhythm needed to protect the drive train from cavitation. You basically lose all your momentum because your off the throttle so much. You can hear Cleet trying to manage/avoid cavitation several times in the video...it's especially tough to avoid in small jet powered watercraft in wavy conditions.
By the time you got there you probably had a concussion without even realizing it. People that often times ride Sea-Doos and Jet Skies end up with CTE due to concussions from the brain shaking back and forth in your head as you're repeatedly slamming into waves. With that small of a boat and the wake being pretty choppy your brain was shaking around in your head for hours and hours. Doesn't seem worth. Still looked like you had fun though!

Doing that trip and arriving in the dark would have been plain stupid, you made the right call to cut it short. That said, I think you should try that 90 mile stretch on its own someday. Making a big crossing like that on those tiny little jet boats is bragging rights for sure. Just pick your day carefully, don't go if you aren't feeling it, and no one who matters will think the accomplishment any less if you bring a more capable chase boat - something with enough space for all the people involved just in case something sinks 45 miles out. ;)

That ain't rough bro, we took a 24 ft. MAko across 43 miles to Bimini from Ft. Lauderdale in 2 to sometimes 6 ft. seas, jumping huge waves for about an hour. An hour and a half trip took 5.5 hours, the center console broke loose from the floor it was so rough and we had to hold it down, one of us on each side, standing for the last three hours while Chuck steered, just getting hammered! That was just 43 miles of open ocean guys. It ain't no joke out there! You were on the gulf side, imagine that twice or more as bad on the Atlantic side.
If you had a trim adjustment (not sure if you do or not) you could adjust it down to try to combat the porpoising. Though if it's bad enough that it keeps porpoising, the trim being down can cause it to slam harder so you could go up to try to stop it from hitting as hard, though then it'll be easier to start porpoising. Kind of a balancing act. They also have runners you can attach to the hull to effectively lengthen the hull without actually lengthening it which would help. They also have side runners and stuff to try to help that also assist with turning (help it to not slide on top of the water as much when turning hard at speed) by biting into the water.
I have taken my 12 ft mini into the Bering and Arctic oceans here in Alaska. They do great in the ocean it is all dependent on how much you really want to send it.

Calmest day ever, “it’s pretty rough”. These guys need a Thundercat ASAP.
Raymond Hunt was a genius, these guys are not...
Standard deadrise for any offshore capable boat, is usually 21 to 26, then being light weight also a big down fall.
People that often times ride Sea-Doos and Jet Skies end up with CTE
due to concussions from the brain shaking back and forth in your head as you're repeatedly slamming into waves. With that small of a boat and the wake
being pretty choppy your brain was shaking around in your head for hours and hours. Doesn't seem worth. Still looked like you had fun though!

Doing that trip and arriving in the dark would have been plain stupid, you made the right call to cut it short. That said, I think you should try that 90 mile stretch on its own someday.
Single file, tight formation. Then switch leader every so often. The trailing boat with have a smooth ride in the wake.
