For being shot in 99, video quality is insanely good
During Woodstock 99, the band and the song were completed unknown (that's why the crowd for their performance is a lot smaller). then 3 months later, the song was released as a single, and a year later it was the number 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100.
Funny you mention this, when he starts off mentioning that this is the debut song off the recently released album, I realized how new it was to the crowd. Little do they know they were listening to a big hit....
Crazy how as I've gotten older, songs that I wasn't crazy about back in the day, I am actually enjoying listening to because it takes me back in time and spawns memories.
They look enthused to play the song, perhaps they were getting great reviews from "secret shoppers" and the song may have been labeled to be an instant success

I was just starting to realize that myself bc I remember exactly when this song was debuted on MTV & TRL and it was the beginning of the summer season in 1999. I had just ended my 8th grade year going into Freshman year and this song I did like it bc it was VERY SNAPPY and VERY CATCHY for those who wanted relationships with someone to love and be with. It’s 2024 now and I can’t believe this song is 24 1/2 years old (25 yrs old technically) Just looking at the small crowd the band is performing in front of as it looks like the day is just starting out. Yeah I know that this band def didn’t have the same fan base as Limp Bizkit & KoRn or even Green Day but HONESTLY NOW THAT I AM ALMOST 40 and A LOT more mature I def would have been singing the words to this song in the crowd. This song def brings back A LOT of memories of the things that went wrong in my past relationships and the things that I wanted in those relationships. The message text in their music video at the end of the video REALLY hits the soul (Everything You Want Is Not Everything You Need) 😪

1 year later, the song tops the US Hot 100.
But unfortunately 4 days later. Fans rioted the place and led to the festival becoming so infamous.

Um the song was like the most played song of the year 2000 and it went to number one on billboard and the album went double platinum! That’s not underrated! Some bands that I like have like 500 subscribers! That’s underrated!

As a Brit, I can remember hearing this song on holiday with my parents in Florida early 2000’s. Never made it in the UK. 20 years later, still love this song and reminisce of great holidays across the pond. Love USA, love the UK

Music is so powerful. The main reason I love it so much, takes you back to good memories, and sometimes not so great.

We are looking at this song being performed before it reach No1 at Billboard 100 by Summer 2000. Nice to see the song being performed before it became huge hit for them. Good quality and the same time bring back my memory of high school.

I think this is better than the album version. The electric guitar sounds more raw and jagged, the drummer's fills and timing is impeccable.
Agree. They sound better live, a fuller and more open guitar-driven sound with the drummer featured more. The studio sound was very compressed, lacked sonic power.

@@essgee4225 God I hope that's what it was. More than likely the song was #1 in Canada and nobody in the US had ever heard of it before. (I'd like to see their performance at EdgeFest in Canada that's he's referring to for reference. I bet the reaction was 10,000x better than this.)
This band looks like a bunch of regular guys having a good time. Based on the crowds non response, they must have been a ‘new band’ at this time.
Discovered Vertical Horizon for the first time in September 2021 when they played in Youngstown with Train. Incredible band! Loved every minute of it! Ran out and bought all their CDs!
This concert was before the song reached the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 on July 15, 2000.

It's hilarious how ironic and iconic this performance is; this song and band was unknown to the audience completely at the time which is why they are like pieces of wood stuck in the ground the entire time. Months later Vertical Horizon would become a hit; almost like this band was literally everything they wanted and sang all the right things, but were perhaps a bit too early for the right time, and because of that they meant nothing to the audience.
It’s NYE 1999, and you’re counting down the seconds to Y2K. The countdown comes and nothing happens. You’re relieved because you hear this song and you know that you won’t miss the WB lineup. 😝😝

This song is easily interpreted as different things for different people. I wanted a deeper relationship with girls I knew in high school when I first heard it, so that's what it was for me. I played it for a very religious cousin of mine and he immediately interpreted what I heard as "he" as "He". I've always been more agnostic, so that had never even crossed my mind. They write it and we make it our own!

I'm wondering if the entire crowd is on anti -depressants? Not one hand in the air, nobody's even moving. VH deserved a better crowd!
The mix was totally off. Theres not acoustic guitar at all.. sounds weird without the harmony base.. also the bass sound is so far away in the back, almost inaudible… the sound guy was having a hardvtime…
But it didn’t cause problem until during the 2nd day of the festival
