    We hope this helps you decide between a sand filter and a cartridge filter! Remember, sand filters are the "workhorse" of filters: they can tackle larger pools and are easy to clean with backwashing (that's great if you have algae issues). Cartridge filters are great for smaller or normal-sized pools and they filter out smaller particles - but they require more hands-on cleaning. And you want more pool maintenance help, grab our free Pool Care Cheat Sheet at www.swimuniversity.com/cheatsheet

    We have a cartridge filter & at times it’s a hassle to clean plus we were told we only need to clean filter about once every 2-3 months. I have to clean it at least every 2 weeks. I’m having trouble keeping the water clear as well. We purchase at least 4 filters a year.

    Consider a mess with replacing sand in your sand filter, precautions not to damage collars and fingers, a mess with leaking multiport valves... Is it really simpler to run sand filter? I am in doubt, I have a 50m3 pool with a sand filter, no idea when the previous owner changed sand, and I am thinkg to change for a cartridge type filter. Clean or replace a cartridge is much simpler and cheaper than changing sand, doing maintenance for the sand filter and the multiport valve, etc

    I replaced my filter's sand media with recycled glass. I used less than 50% by weight and I also use the trick of adding about two cups of DE. I used the the DE trick on sand as well and its always helped significantly. The glass alone works better than sand. When working in combination with glass, the 20K gallon pool can clear an algae bloom in less than 48 hours of continuous running. The two cups of DE gets replaced after each backwash. Hope this is useful for folks.

      @@mattlane2282 You're right. If someone is planning on purchasing a new sand filter only to replace and augment the media, that would be wasted money and effort.
      In this case, the pool and sand filter were included with the property. The vinyl liner was replaced and the filter reused. $50 in media and DE is relatively low cost.
      It seemed that the DE was making its way through and settling, but it turned out to be algae detritus. Given that most stays in the filter and any that passes will settle quickly, its not difficult to use. Don't notice it at all when swimming and eventually the need to vacuum arises as part of maintenance.

    they advertise sand filters with glass media down to 5 microns, which is lower then any cartridge filter is advertised to do. I find that interesting. The biggest issue with sand filters is the multiport valve which restricts flow for modern pumps to ~60ish GPM (range from 40-70GPM).

    I did the cartridge in the beginning and then switched to the sand. The cartridge was a pain in the butt, it required more cleaning and I constantly had issues resealing the unit. When I thought it was sealed I would turn on the pump and of course, it would start spraying everywhere

    • @caramia1042
      @caramia1042 9 месяцев назад

      I agree the filter cartridge is a real pain. And you're always replacing the filter that gets dirty really fast and you can't waste out, the dirty water just sits in the cartridge. With sand it lasts forever. Sand never deteriorates if so we'd never
      have beaches.
      And you can never get a good seal, always replacing the big o ring and air in the system all the time.

      Have an 8k gal in ground pool and wash the cartridige once/month in summer and maybe twice during the entire winter. Also depends on how much crud and debris get in your pool and how well you clean and maintain it. I don't do all the rigamarole with the filter cleaning either: just hose it off with the jet setting on the hose and that's it, and change cartridge every 3 to 4 years.
