Hey Lucy, I'm doing my master in psychology in China, I'm also writing up my thesis, just wanna tell you that what you are doing with this channel is really really helpful and inspiring! Even though we study in different fields, I still learned a lot from you! Thank you!
I love your description, "socially awkward...PhD student". I am completing my second year and I still feel socially awkward. Perfect description. A friend who has an EdD, recently completed a masters in TESOL and wrote his thesis on doctoral studies as a second language. It's so true! We're learning new vocabulary, new culture, etc. Be encouraged... You'll do great!
I just discovered your channel. Your presentation is wonderful. You speak clearly, get to the point quickly, and convey all the essentials and show what is necessary on the screen. No strange segues, no unnecessary animations or artistic shots of black coffee. This is the gold standard for 'advice' videos in academia. Well done!!!
Hey Lucy, I'm half way through first year of my PhD. Until a few days ago, I was reviewing journals the "old fashioned way" by pen & pencil. Now I have 5 notebooks & a diary. I'm already getting confused & carrying all of my papers, notebook is certainly not a sustainable. Especially when I'm study aboard & regularly travelling. I'm so glad I found your channel. Currently in the process of digitising all of my notebooks (very long process), but I've also notes from PhD meetings and my diary. Your advice is already working, it feels so good to have my work organised in one place. This will certainly make the process of writing my first manuscript "a little less painful". Thank you so much Lucy! All the best with your PhD Dheeraj
Lucy, i've just found your channel and happy to see your new videos. i'm prepearing for the phd in Norway and nex year i'll be finished my master of arts programme. and i just wanted to say thank you!
I'm an incoming first year Masters Student and I'm thinking about getting a PhD after it. I'm quite nervous but thanks to your honest and informative videos I feel more prepared. You are full of wisdom and I appreciate what you do. You are a great help to a lot of us. Many thanks!
Congratulations, Lucy on this 50th video. You were the one to recommend the rising early plan, the several ways of note-taking and budgeting. Prayers for your success all the way.
I have been using Evernote for a while now, and even more thoroughly since I started my PhD one and a half month ago. While writing in my 40th note it feels good to know that Evernote helped you so much towards the end! My workflow is a bit different from yours, but just having the notes also helps to confirm that I actually did work (I can actually see the amount of notes growing). One major thing I do that helps me a lot is to write weekly summaries of my main insight and activities. And with the tags I can easily line them up to create an overview of everything I've done :)
Hi Lucy, I love this video. You are obviously a wonderful student, I wish you all the best in the end of Ph.D. studies! I have done the same with OneNote because it handles figures screen clipping quite well. I haven't tried Evernote, but I love your note-taking template!
Great work Lucy! I'm not working on a thesis but was looking for powerful ways to use Evernote and this was one of the most useful videos. Thank you! Best of luck with your PhD - I'm sure you're going to ace it!
Thank you Lucy, your videos are awesome, easy to understand and really helpful. I am in the last year of my Masters and switching over to some of these helpful apps so it is great that you are reviewing them and giving advice to what helped you during your PhD.
Dear Lucy, I'm in my final year of PhD and I still feel like I just started! There have been many mornings where I sit at my desk and don't feel motivated or good enough at all to be a "PhD student" (these expectations we have for ourselves are high, right?) but every time I watch one of your videos, without fail, I feel a little bit better & more inspired. You've showed that PhD students are humans after all, but you still give us excellent advice to produce work of a high standard. I think you're a really cool person and a great scientist! Thank you for letting me be a part of your PhD journey - you have certainly been a big part of mine. Sending love!
Hey Lucy ! I'm in my 1st year PhD, thank you so much for all your video, they help me a lot ! I share your videos with the other PhD students in my institute :) !
This helped me a TON reviewing my literature. I'm just about to start my project (I'm actually finishing up my comprehensive exams) and it's a bit daunting, but this is a brilliant way to make it easier.
As I'm starting my masters thesis soon (well, the soonness depends on corona lol) I'm gonna try this. I'm excited to bring some more structure into my readings :D
Thank you for this video! I LOVE Evernote and have been trying to find a way to utilize it to organize everything in regards to my PhD. I love how you used it to organize your journal articles. I have already set up a template modeled after your example. This makes me so excited!
Lucy you are such an inspiration. I'm a beginner in research and bumped into your channel. A one stop for all PhD needs . 😀 Wishing you the best in all your efforts.
Thank you for sharing this - it’s such a good method! Just beginning to write up my PhD prospectus (US programme) and will definitely be trying this out.
Hi Lucy! These videos are so great and helpful. I'm at the point where I'm trying to start writing up some of my PhD work, and I would LOVE another video with more tips on how you've used Evernote to help organize other aspects of your PhD besides the papers/literature review (like the xxx All My Experiments xxx note!). I know I've done a lot of things, but it's just overwhelming trying to wrap my mind around it all, so any tips you have for this would be amazing!
Hi Lucy! I am a Masters student at Queen Mary University of London and just started using Evernote because of you. The software is great! Thanks for the tip!
Thanks Lucy for this great video. I wish someone had warned me about haphazard note taking when I was earlier on in my PhD. I've been at this history phd for years now and I shot myself in the foot due to some notes being on paper, others being in a pdf file, or sadly, having only marginal comments on a printed document. I am in such pain trying to find a way out of this enormous hole.
Hey Lucy, I'm wondering how you use Evernote and Zotero consecutively. Since you use Evernote to make notes about the papers, are you essentially duplicating your whole paper library into Evernote from Zotero? I've been using Zotero's notes tab for each paper but it's VERY limited and basic in note-taking capability. Thanks!
I’m nowhere near this level of academia yet, just starting my graduate studies, but I am shifting away from paper and have been searching for a way to manage my notes on the literature in a manageable way.
Hi Lucy, yet another brilliantly informative video. Did you up grade your Evernote subscription to a Premium membership as there appears to be a few things that you can do that l am unable to in the Basic membership like using your own templates and attaching your research articles. In advance enormous thanks, Britt
hi Lucy, ty for ur guidance and suggestion, at this point nobody actually offers a genuine help, but u are doing it. I m going to try the evernote i hope i will also be able to make the best of its use. Can u suggest me an interesting app to practice or improve my typing speed and accuracy.
It's a completely different piece of software to Mendeley. Evernote is a note-taking app, and Mendeley is a citation/PDF organisation tool. And no, Evernote does not have BibTex or LaTeX compatibility. Think of it as an electronic notebook more than anything.
Hi Lucy, thank you for your great videos. Do you or any of your viewers have any experience to share from using Notion for organizing notes or for other cataloguing tasks?
I'm wondering how this process would translate for developing a qualitative research thesis introduction. Does evernote provide coding or tagging of pieces within the content of bodies of text (whether uploaded or written within the program)? In your paper notes, btw they are so clean and beautiful! I see a lot of bullet points and isolated pieces of data/information... My paper notes don't look like that! Tagging + coding is a possible solution to later go back and find the relevent bits that were identified in my initial reading and note taking. Also trying to sort out if the challenge is with doing qualitative research, or if I lack note taking skills!
I would love to see your approach to writing up the results and discussion chapter. Specifically, do you use similar system to this for "literature context" part of the results discussion?
Hey Lucy, at 3:25, how do you find the several references for a particular statement in your write-up? It's easy to reference just one person, but how do you find that 5 other people said something similar and therefore have them included in that reference block.
Hey Lucy, I'm doing my master in psychology in China, I'm also writing up my thesis, just wanna tell you that what you are doing with this channel is really really helpful and inspiring! Even though we study in different fields, I still learned a lot from you! Thank you!
How are you using RUclips if you're in China

I love your description, "socially awkward...PhD student". I am completing my second year and I still feel socially awkward. Perfect description. I wish I had known this when I started my PhD. I guess I can use for my postdoc to write papers. Thanks for the tip.
thanks Lucy, I am at the start of my PhD and I am already using Evernote after you recommended it. It's a life-saver.
Thank you Lucy for this video. This is exactly what I have been looking for to start with my writing! Best wishes to you and cheers!

Thanks Lucy :) Great video.
thanks a lot for the video
Love your layout can you share your template ? Like for example in Notion, people can duplicate your template and so on...
Great video

can you check out taskade next? maybe taskade vs notion

hi lucy, your video has been very helpful. Thank you. I started evernote. Which one is the best for literature review? notion or evernote?
I highly recommend roam research for a literature review
It's currently closed to new users, unfortunately. :(
I would love to see your approach to writing up the results and discussion chapter. Specifically, do you use similar system to this for "literature context" part of the results discussion?
thanks a lot...
Hey Lucy, at 3:25, how do you find the several references for a particular statement in your write-up? It's easy to reference just one person, but how do you find that 5 other people said something similar and therefore have them included in that reference block.
I’d imagine making such videos are. But like video journaling
Lucy are you sponsored or do you have a stipend for your writing up period?
subscribed !
Do you use reference manager as well?
One needs to take premium plan or with free version thesis can be done? I have time crunch and need to finish very soon
