"pride, self respect, quiet dignity, accomplishment"...these are the things that focus gives and that no one can take away from you. I really, really like this. thank you
I had noticed it all the same, when I could focus and when I could not. The listening to lyrical music to cause distraction, or to do other matters, I felt hindered to my ability to focus. It became easier to focus when I only listened to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin,..the classical composers to get my mind working on a task efficiently. I listened to a great deal of classical music during my grad school years to get tons of work done very quickly. Procrastination is so easy to slip into & can be extremely hard to slip out of for a person.
For those into Eastern traditions, I found meditation and martial arts or yoga extremely helpful. These basically train your mind to focus and help your brain rewire in positive ways. More and more scientific evidence on the matter. Also, there seem to exist a link between your microbiome, your diet and your brain, therefore your ability to focus (there is tons of new interesting research on the matter). Since I cut sugar and processed food, I have the impression that I can focus much more. Anyway, just saying. Good video btw!
This was a great video Lucy! I think my proudest achievement was having my MSc supervisor tell me she thought my analysis was really insightful, even if it didn't achieve the grade I had intended for (graded by other people). It was such hard going and having an expert in the field confirm that my thoughts were going in the right direction was amazing. I usually listen to long (1-2h) electronic music sets to really do deep focus work, as I've realized if I don't listen to music my mind really wanders and my inner critic creeps in!
Hi Lucy. Now that you are near to finish your PhD (as I am), what about a video on "staying in Academia" or based on how to make a decision on careers? I enjoy your videos. Thanks!
Tip on keeping focus - I found measuring time spent on each task is the first step to realize how much time is required for each task. So the number one tips is to use a timer and monitor distraction! I agree the motivation often comes from the visualization of future, but I also feel that PhD study is like swimming. It also requires being fully present and mindful about each stroke and reminding ourselves how to keep the best streamlined form. Questions for Lucy: As most studies have shown that PhD could feel highly isolated and lonely, what are you personally experience in keeping a healthy supportive peer-group? Does mentorship play a role at this stage as you are getting to the end of PhD? Hope we could catch coffee some day! Perhaps after you are all #Phinished :)
Hey Lucy, I love your videos ❤️. Could you possibly make a video on how to have a balanced social/family life while persuing a PhD? For me, I have been struggling with taking part in normal activities/holidays/hobbies. When I do take time off to focus on other areas of my life I tend to stress and feel guilty for not focusing 100% on my project 24/7.
My major accomplishment so far is actually producing enough and good results for a paper that will be published soon, contributed to two major collaborative papers at the same time. I feel proud of myself cause this all happened after I wasted 2 months fearing that I can't crack/understand the implementation of C++ code and how to use it to slowly bringing up myself to do it after repeated failures but when I did the productivity boosted to a huge extent, I told myself it's OK not to be able to understand something for a while because in the end if you are perseverant, you will end up solving the problem at least to some extent, this lesson is/will be hard coded and I hope I learn more such subtle ways of doing research.. The video was great.. I could completely relate to what you are saying already.. Thank you and hope to see more content!!
I'm starting an MS program shortly. I want to do as well as possible in it, so I have been thinking a lot about what worked and didn't work for me during my undergrad. During my first year, I did really well, but I as got further into my undergrad, I struggled more and more. At the time, I identified a number of factors that might have led to that, the difficulty of the material, dissatisfaction with one of my majors, and being involved in too many things. While other certainly played affected me, listening to you made me realize that my focus drastically changed over time. As I progressed, I thought that keeping a schedule that maximally flexible schedule was key. I used to habitually study at the same times and places. Sure, there were numerous other factors that played into how well I did, but I think that refocusing should be a top priority with the start of my grad program. Thank you!!!
I didn't realize how much though I give to the next song in the playlist until you put it into words... I'm proud of myself for publishing post masters even though I have a full time job. And I have the worst case of procrastination 😁 Thanks for this video! The last words about being calm and proud are very motivating, thank you!
My proudest accomplishment was an app I developed that gave me national recognition and accolades , this was 2 years ago since then I’ve found it almost impossible to finish another. Watching this has not only giving me motivation to finish the apps I’ve started but the desire to enjoy the experience. Thanks.🙏🏽
So much of what you talked about here could be telling my story too. As you say, social media can be a big distraction - even though it sometimes alerts me to useful ideas to investigate as part of my project - so I have started enforcing breaks of a day or two when I get to parts of my research where I need to focus deeply. You are right - it does make a difference.
For me there are times when I’m de focused because there is something else that is keeping my mind subconsciously busy. For example, I might be worried about - how can I finish my project in such less time. This has a cascading effect on my mood and efficiency on other research related tasks that require full concentration. I just discovered that meditation helps me keep track of such “thought-holes”. I can then assign a bracket of time to do something about this worry of mine- for ex make a chart etc and program my mind after meditation that- I will probably encounter these kind of unnerving thoughts but let’s not mind that because well deal with it later! That helps me concentrate better at the task in hand.
what a useful comment here! Thanks for sharing the tips :) i found one thing to work is to set aside "worry time", to tell our brain ( and body) , we wil have time to worry later but now, let's FOCUS! 😊
What I observe with high functioning people is that they have a lot of energy. Energy levels differ drastically amongst people. but it is not really talked about that often. Some people have more energy than others. Some people just go go go, and are not overwhelmed as much. They go to bed and the next day, they are fresh.
I think I agree with Stella to an extent in that a lot of the high energy people have is somewhat of an illusion. For instance, I myself appear like a high energy person. I walk very quickly, I speak with a lot of enthusiasm, I'm generally very "go go go" as you put it. But here's the thing, under the surface I often do feel overwhelmed, fatigued and depressed. So I think that sometimes it can be more a quirk of someone's personality that makes them seem so full of energy, more than it is actually a reflection of them truly being more energetic. However, there definitely does seem to be considerable individual variation in how prone to experiencing "burn-out" people are. While as a person I can appear very upbeat and energetic, I actually can get burned out fairly quickly, making me prone to experiencing some periods of exhaustion where I wake up the next day not feeling fresh at all, but even then I probably still appear energetic because of my mannerisms. In contrast, I do think there are genuinely some people who do not experience that feeling of being burned out very often. I honestly believe those people are quite rare though and a lot of the high energy types are not necessarily having as easy a time as they appear to be on the surface.
What i consider a big accomplishment is being able to persevere in finsihing and submitting my Thesis. Despite unexpected circumstances that were out of ctrl one week before the thesis subission, whih have put mein a very frustrated and difficult situation. However , indeed staying focused and perseverance got me to defend with a high distinction. Now i am also focusing to get a grant for my phD an this what keeps me motivated because when i focus i get things done and i want to achieve more
Thanks a lot Lucy, this is really a special video, the way you share facts and provide solution to get rid out of the bad habits (which we realize after certain period of time ) are really helpful. Wish you all the very best in your work and life . Thanks
Hi Lucy. I'm not a Phd candidate but I did complete a Masters. I think curiosity is the foundation of scholarship. Moreover, curiosity will carry you throughout the project. Then, it's the Will Power, to stay focused and complete the Phd that works in the end. Thanks for your videos.
Thank you for your very helpful videos. I am going to download Evernote in just a moment, based on what you said in your other video. What is your proudest accomplishment? I think mine is paying off my six-figure student loan balance, and moving to a foreign country to do my Ph. D. on a topic in which I truly believe, although I am only just about to begin my doctoral studies.
Hi Lucy! Thank you so much for the work you put into these videos, you are so articulate and on point! I definitely needed this video right now! Cheers!
Hi Lucy, I love your videos, they are so helpful and make me feel motivated! Could you please do a video on PhD Vivas? The preparation/what to expect? Thanks!
Absolutely! Good tips and comments. I wonder how to get motivated when you get a bunch (I mean a huge amount) of corrections and comments on your thesis... I know it's for the best of our work and everything but... Feelings and moods are difficult to control, even when we are aware of them
Hi love your motivational videos on your journey and congratulations that you got through, can you help in some general areas, CO-supervisor situation, some common over enthusiasm mistakes , it’s only 3 months and I feel losing it ...
Hi, Lucy. I admire your articulation on this as well as many other topics. I'm also a 4th year phd student. But if I may contribute with another perspective, my main trouble with motivation is the social distress of this time we live in. I've come to think of myself as selfish for needing so much time by myself (required by the routine you so well explained as a profoundly helpful way to focus) when family, friends and the community have such urgent demands. I realize now it has created a difficult block with my writing, even when I do get to have time by myself - which seems only counterproductive. But it's been a difficult issue to solve.
Lucy, what month will be finished with your PhD? Did Mars look like Planet Earth once with blue skies and bodies of water because I watched a documentary that this Earth like planet did once? My accomplishment was earning a MA in Classical Studies at the Open University in Milton Keynes.
Most important skills for a PhD: naiveness, self-hatred, paradoxical superiority complex, willingness to be exploited for little to no money, fear of leaving academia and navigating the real job market.
hey Lucy, Thanks a lot for your sharing. Was wondering how do you manage your writing routine on daily progress closer to your final year? in average, how long do you spend researching in the lab and writing your paper?
