"The blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds." Just beautiful. They don't make eloquent newsmen like him anymore.
Alliteration is a wonderful part of speech.
Society is too dumb to even know what that means anymore. Let alone the TV news. @@JohnnyAngel8
It's gotta be hard unleashing a line like that on the world, knowing it's all downhill for the English language from there.
I legit thought that Ben made that up
He did a better job than this narrator who insists on dialogue as if he’s talking to a bunch of 5 year olds lol. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s AI
Whale, that escalated quickly.
Don't blubber on about it.
I'm fin-ished with this kind of talk.
@A_Boogeyperson And what if I do so? Whale you come to pun-ish me?
xd
I'm about to baleen out of this whale conversation.
Imagine being the guy that was like, "Hey, you either need to use less or more explosives to get the outcome you want." And you prove them right, but your car is also destroyed by whale flesh. I feel bad for him, honestly. Tried to warn them and the only thing he got was an unsusable car.
At least he got his money back.
tbf tho he got that new car feeling twice and only paid once
I don’t think that guy knew what he was talking about. Using less explosives to push the whale out to sea would have just resulted in a slightly moister beached whale when the tide inevitably brought it back. And if he really foresaw what was about to happen, the why would he risk his life just to stick around and watch?
Gottem
@@mushyroom9569well to be fair I think most men would put themselves in danger to watch something explode lmao
As an Oregonian, it is so embarrassing that my home state is infamously recognized for this event 💀

I’d be proud
I know you for the faerie fest because a friend had a hilarious acid trip while attending years ago, because I'm old and irrelevant now.
And if it makes you feel better Oregon is on my bucket lists because I want to be able to go to faerie fest at least once...but I'm not doing that until my children are able to be like... Adult enough to not burn my house down while we go for 4 days and travel internationally. The one downside to that *teen mom life* is that you don't get to have acid trips in Oregon, you get to change and wash diapers and have a baby try to nurse upside down (I should've known then he'd be an... Interesting child 😂😊😊)buuuut my kids will be growned while I'm still young enough to use my hips... Theoretically...
i feel like most ppl know it cause it’s pretty
The best part about this whole story is realizing just how many layers of people the plan had to go through and not one of them stopped to think this was a bad idea. The people on site, the ones coming up with the idea to blow it up, the city officials approached with the plans, the explosives experts brought in to do the demolition, the law enforcement officers involved in everything, all of it. At no point did anyone think this plan through. To paraphrase the later Jurassic Park, they spent so long asking themselves if they could do it they failed to ask if they should.
They did have an expert...
the guy who said "You're using too little to vapourise the carcass...and too much to shift it."
He's the guy who got his car crushed.
@@JohnSmith-yv6eqYeah but they didn't listen to him
Well, it's the default option in America, isn't it? Why would anyone question it?
It's just. It's so much a 1970s USA response and I'm sorry but it is genuinely hilarious
It was 1970. All drugs were practically legal then and no testing. I imagine these officials were higher than the 150 ft chunks of whale. One thing I don't get is why they thought seagulls and whatever else would be interested in it when it appears they weren't when the whale was fully intact? Seagulls are not vultures.
It's truly unbelievable how some of the most ridiculous and dangerous ideas were actually carried out deliberately.
Like dumping radioactive contaminated water from a nuclear disaster into the fxxxing sea.

This incident still cracks me up to this day. The distance those chunks of flesh and bone traveled, could have done such more damage had there been hundreds of spectators.
I totally agree with you.
Yeah, they blasted those whale parts almost as high as Russia's new exploding tank turret toss.

My high school AP Physics class used this to teach us about explosions and how matter/particles behave after being blown up.
Kinda gets me thinking what if the blast was channelled using a sand dish?
Sounds like a fun teacher, lucky you.
Atleast Ur schools actually teach cool stuff... Unlike mine
For what chapter or part of the AP Physics ?
The actual news story commentary is priceless.

I've been to Florence and I am not surprised this happened.
That was quite a mood lifter after your previous video covered the horrific Cocoanut Grove fire. Love it!
As a native Oregonian I pass around the news footage of the event on a regular basis. It's always good to make you laugh until you cry.

Oddly enough, this is NOT the only blunder done with a dead whale.
There was another incident where a dead whale was put on a flatbed truck and drove it into a business area. The heat of the sun bloated the carcass and its belly raptured, covering the stores in vicera.
Can't recall where that incident happen.
it happened in Taiwan
@@ATL465 Thank you😀👍
God almighty can you imagine a 5 year old seeing that? 😅
I saw that video & it was a total mess in the streets
Yes I remember the video the Taiwan whale incident is way worse compared to the one in Oregon. Plus there’s another whale mess, the whale was lifted with an construction machinery in the attempt to place the whale into a dumpster, use to say that it didn’t go as planned, if you search you can find the video of the whale into the dumpster. 🤦♂️
"Let's airate this thing into a million pieces all over the beach. That'll smell better." Someguy probably.

As someone who was born in Oregon, and has lived here most of my life, I love that you featured this story! 🤣 It's definitely an amusing bit of our past, and a reflection of how quirky my home state can be! 🥰
Oregon is not “quirky” lmao- 💀
Embrace the quirks of your homeland ^^ I love how we all have our oddities no matter where we’re from. I was giggling throughout this entire video. I felt so bad for the car owner but I'm glad nobody was hurt beyond the nausea xD

What I love about this that I have never heard before that is golden, is the story about Walt Umenhofer's car and how they sold it as a "Whale of a deal""! Just another wonderful truth to laugh about in this tale.
"The blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds" has been a running joke in my family for years now. And what does it say about me that I saw the title and went "which one?"
I remember hearing about this years ago, this is the first I have seen about it for many years, what a fiasco and those poor cars!
These wonderful creatures all have to die but the inconvenience this one caused has gone down in history!
Sound like everyone had a blast.
Should've rechristened it "BLUBBER BEACH"
Ah, classic. As an Oregonian, I embrace our history. Florence is a great place to visit, though! Check out the State Natural Area nearby that is a botanical preserve for carnivorous Cobra Lilies (Darlingtonia). Tons of other stuff nearby as well, like the Oregon Coast Aquarium a bit north, and the Prehistoric Gardens -- a dinosaur-themed roadside attraction -- to the south. My wife and I drove up to see a beached sperm whale carcass at the beach earlier this year... though that seems a bit morbid, I'm sure, it was amazing to see a sperm whale in person. I've gone whale watching, but sperm whales are not a species I'm ever likely to see alive. Biologists removed parts for study first, and many people went to see it before it was buried. (And shockingly, it didn't smell all that bad.)

You should do one on the Andrea Gail. The fishing boat that sank off the coast of Massachusetts. It's the story that inspired the movie _The Perfect Storm_ .

2:02 saul goodmen?
You got your facts wrong mate, it was a gray whale, as evidenced by the photos: sperm whales have teeth, gray whales have baleen. the original broadcast in 1970 also identifies it as a gray whale.
Leaving it to rot will cause it to explode on its own. It's happened before where it exploded from decomposing and lots of parts went everywhere amd probably killed a few people.
The guy covering it on the mews was wonderful
Why didn't they use excavators to push it into the ocean and then have a tug boat tow it out to sea so the sharks could eat it?
Nobody thought to helicopter crane lift it out and dispose of it at a dump. Where gulls, ravens, crows, and other scavengers would clean it up quite quickly.
please enable adding this video to playlist, i want to keep it for samples, amazing stuff
Next time, get a cable round it and tow it out to sea; let the sharks deal with it.
In time people forget, history repeats, this will happen again someday.
They don't do fun things like this anymore

Less than ideal execution aside, this is one of the most beautifully American solutions to any problem I've ever seen. Let's just be thankful that no one (aside from the whale and the Oldsmobile of course) was hurt. God bless the United States!
Surely was a whale of a deal
I’m amazed that only 1 person thought this was a bad idea. So happy they bought that 1 person a new car. I lost it when he said the car was advertised as a “whale of a deal”🤣🤣🤣🤣
the fact that explosions genrally don't have positive outcomes should have been the first clue to the disaster that was about to happen.
I've seen at least 4 videos on this event in the last decade or so. It still cracks me the fuck up! Its as if they put a bunch of hillbilly teenagers in charge of managing the situation as duck tape and dynamite are go to solutions for all matters small and large! Its as if someone asked, "Once this TNT goes off where will all the whale parts go?" and another replied, "Shut up BOB! You're always over thinking shit!" BOOM!!! "Shit! Oh shit! Run!!!" 😆 1:48 Look how confident and relaxed they are! Hahahahahahahaaa...

This happens now and then here on the Lofoten Islands in Norway. Then one of the coast guard ships takes it in tow out to great depths, attaches a weight, punctures it so that it sinks to the delight of fish and the many organisms that live in the depths. Greetings, Gunnar Andersen.
Why didn't they use long towing equipment and tug boats to tow the whale out to sea, so ocean creatures could feed on it?
