Fiber skins not around then. Looks like he has an old head cut out and taped on top, to deaden sound for recording. Back in day (and still today) I would put another head upside down on my snare to greatly lower the fundamental and give it a dark sound on a given song (instead of having a second snare). But never seen an old head cut out like this but certainly effective in getting gvthst classic old school muffled thud :)
