When the VC-10s went so did part of my childhood. I grew up next to Heathrow Airport and BOAC's VC-10s were part of our everyday world. They were so regular and their maintainence area was visible from our bedroom window! As well as BOAC, the VC-10 was flown by East African Airways, Air Malawi, Nigeria Airways, Gulf Air and at least one Middle East Royal Family. The VC-10 really was a beautiful aircraft.
Instant fan. Wow. What an aircraft. I can most definitely see the British love for this beauty. I'm american, but the Brits can sure make beautiful aircraft. 5:26 - Love the downwash to the trees on short final.
I worked for many many years on theses old ladies, when they were in PROPER colours! White over grey! Flew on hundreds of sorties air-tests and even a bit of weightless floating about, high jinx a few times over Wales during air tests......AWESOME. Many hours sat under the engines on long lead headset on the detuners on engine runs on hot summer days or snowy winter ones. My heart breaks seeing them go and obviously one of them DOESNT want to land for that muppet at Brunty to disrespectfully smash them up! There are probably MILLIONS of people, myself included who would have bought parts off these aircraft 🤷🏻♂️ Those of us who worked in Base Hangar all painted our initials inside the tailplane leading edges when we had them off for inspections! There were HUNDREDS of names there! I loved the howl of the Conways and we were even doing circuit bumps when one of them ATE A BIRD and blew itself to crap! I did have the photos somewhere but sadly lost now I think. The VC10 was simply and aircraft before her time, quiet, safe, reliable and efficient KILLED by BOAC buying bloody crappy mass produced ‘Boring’ 707’s. If they had stuck with BRITISH then HUNDREDS if VC10’s would have been built not just 54 😢. RIP to our VC’s who fly forever now in cloudless skies in the heaven of the classic aircraft........... Thank you to all the Vickers staff, including my dad, who built them. THERE WILL NEVER BE AN AIRCRAFT TO EQUAL YOUR GRACE.......erm....apart from Concorde.....Vulcan.....and so on. Thanks for the video PS they kept the Vulcan flying for years longer, why didnt they preserve one in airworthy condition. 808 was a good candidate until numpty boy cut it into bits and shipped it to Cosford😡 TBH these could ALL have been flown to Nevada and preserved out in the desert with all the other old survivors 😔
Yep, she was a superb lady. Not sure what's happened to the 2 remaining ones at Bruntingthorpe but Cox who now run the place have restricted access to virtually all of the airfield except the QRA Lightning shed and the scrap yard where the Victor, Nimrod and Comet are parked. I did hear they were for the chop but not sure if it's happened yet. The Tin Triangle mob would have been better getting a '10 back in the air instead of wasting their time on a Cranberry. A '10 would have had massive support from the public for a return to flight, but sadly I doubt there are any airframes in any sort of state that could be renovated now. A very sad end to a truly iconic and unique aircraft😢
@@125brat the latest I have heard of the two at bruntingthorpe: ZA147 was crushed (cockpit section has been saved reportedly) ZD241 is still there waiting to be cut up. The comet, victor and nimrod are parked in a corner of the airfield, supposedly safe for the time being although I am doubtful of it. All tristars will be gone by the time this is read (5 out of 6 crushed at time of writing). Sx-oad was an early victim of the sale and I’ve been made aware vp-bgx and vp-bgy are scrapped. Smaller jets (Canberra, hunters etc…) have been put in a little corner next to the lightning QRA shed and I believe are part of a new museum. It’s frankly awful what has happened there and what will happen in the not too distant future. No one has the funds to move zd241 and as such it will undoubtedly be scrapped. The nimrod, comet and victor might be kept safe for the time being but I don’t think it will be for too much longer.
The VC10 was one of the most splendid aeroplanes ever built. When it comes to style and dignity, the British have it over the rest of us. That's why it's called GREAT Britain!
I spent 9 years at BZN,airframe tec, flew all over the world on the ten, best aircraft EVER,SO SAD to see them all gone now,a few tears watching this, the very best time of my life.
I remember the random occurrence for me that happened on the 04/07/2012, that soon become apparent after reading up after about the retirement of XV104 - I was out jogging exiting Fleckney, just down the road from Bruntingthorpe on that day and witnessing what to me looked like 4:28. There was no other feeling like it and the sound at the time really had to be experienced in real life, simply incredible and mind blowing. At the time I had no idea what was going on until I got on the internet a few hours later and read all about the planes & experiencing what appeared to be some history around these magnificent aircraft's being retired. Thanks for posting.
Gorgeous, beautiful aircraft. Such a shame to think that all these ladies have now been cut up. I do wish British business had more respect for our engineering heritage. Sadly money talks.
TR6Telos A similar situation occurred on the BBC Breakfast Show 15 September 2010. 70 Anniversary of the Battle of Britain . Didn't get a mention but the late George Michael's antics in a public toilet did!
What an aircraft that would be to fly, it still looks modern, a flying work of art, check out the T tail designed for exceptional directional stability. And faster then today’s airliners
Thanks for this brilliant piece of film of the VC10's - did you spot XV102 bursting the starboard outer rear main wheel on landing? It happens 41 seconds in, and isn't apparent on the film as it's fading from one shot to another!
It appears, to this old ATC, that the truck rolled thru standing water on the runway. Had the tire exploded, it would have been known for miles. I once saw a DC-8-63 blow a main on departure just as the aircraft rotated. The blast rattled our tower window panes!
I talked to a retired VC-10 pilot and spoke about a flight coming back to London from Africa. He said they idled the engines over the Bay of Biscay and didn't touch the throttles again until short finals at Heathrow.
Thrust reverse on the outboard Conways only as far as I can remember. The reverse thrust was directed through louvres on the top and bottom rear of the engine nacelles when selected.
As an ex Air steward on 10 sqn., at Brize Norton from 1972 to 74, and well before the refuelling probes were fitted, this was nostalgic.
The world's most beautiful airliner. Ever. Period.
Meh? Get out of here. The VC-10 is gorgeous.
Almost. You forgot Concorde
Agree 100%
What a brilliant aircraft, it's amazing how short the roll out is after the landing. Still one of the most beautiful jets ever built!!!!

You be interested in British V Bomber. The Victor, check it out, 60 year old aircraft but still looks futuristic
well done Chris, the RAF, & everyone involved in keeping these awsome noisy jets in service

The most beautiful, sexiest, fastest (subsonic) aircraft ever. Brings my school holidays in Africa flooding back. ❤
Such a beautiful aircraft. I miss the crackle of those Conways waking me up in the morning.
Im proud to say , my Father worked on Concorde , And the V.C10 , Ex GulfAir , To turn them into Tankers !

Don't forget the Victor 😁
Fab go-round!

That sounds surreal...
Queen of the skies. Beautiful.
Sad to see any final flight, beautiful queens
Perfect safety record too I think 🤔
I get the same feeling watching this as I do when I see an E-Type Jag. Spent 6 years on shiny 10.
I spent 7 years of my 15 years in the RAF flying ascabincrew the these aircraft. Sad to see them end their days, but I guess that's progress!
What a Beautiful aircraft ... Designed with Love & Desire ... not a computer
Remember the B.O.A.C Slogan ... Try A Little Tenderness :)
Gorgeous, beautiful aircraft. Such a shame to think that all these ladies have now been cut up. I do wish British business had more respect for our engineering heritage. Sadly money talks.
Brilliant steady video Chris, of extinction. The BBC were too busy filming some "celebrity" at the time.

What a shame to retire these airworthy aircraft they still look modern
They are old and cost a fortune to keep flying.

Couldn't see it burst but you can see it's gone as he taxis around the corner.
@@Vektorer you can see it at 0:54

Flew back from singapore on 102,very eventful flight
The world's best looking aircraft ever....
When Britain wasn’t lazy. When it was proud. When it could build the fastest subsonic aircraft in the world. Oh how we have 🤬ed up since those days...
Anyone else notice @ 0:54 XV102 has a puncture in its RH outer rear Starboard tyre?
Being Cabin Crew at BZZ 1984-1988 I flew on all 4 airframes shown in this video..10 Sqn Rem acu Tangere(To hit the mark)👍
My Dad flew on these as a kid on BOAC
Why did some versions only have two reversers?
awesome
Anybody notice the first one that landed the o/s/rear tyre was burst
What kind of reverse thrust did this have? I can’t see anything on the engines when it activates.
Thrust reverse on the outboard Conways only as far as I can remember. The reverse thrust was directed through louvres on the top and bottom rear of the engine nacelles when selected.
Never realized the rake
XV102, Tyre blow out on the O/S.
Now they are all scrapped.
