  • Yellowstone National Park has not been shut down due to volcanic concerns. Recent updates from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirm that the park remains open to the public. While some roads may be closed due to weather conditions, there is no unusual or dangerous volcanic activity within the park. In fact, the current volcano alert level is NORMAL, and the aviation color code is GREEN.
In April 2024, Steamboat Geyser erupted for the second time this year, but this does not indicate an imminent volcanic eruption. The ongoing seismicity in the Yellowstone region is typical and accounts for about 50% of total seismic activity. Ground deformation, as measured by continuous GPS stations, shows subsidence in the caldera, consistent with patterns observed since 2015.
So, while the risk of a sudden eruption remains low, scientists continue to monitor Yellowstone closely. Join us for a deeper dive into the science behind this iconic national park!
