- This video shows how to recover a Cisco Catalyst switch.
If the IOS image on your switch becomes corrupted, it can be difficult to recover your switch. Some switches do not support TFTP and FTP without an IOS image installed. Additionally, the USB port may not work. In this situation, XMODEM must be used to transfer files in order to recover the switch.
I am so glad I came across your video. Thank you so much. I'm new to configuring switched. I thought I may have bricked it. You video saved me! Cheers!

Doubt, does this delete or alter the previously existing startup config(other than baud rate)?

Nice video, after recovering IOS image, did our old configurations will remain same or loss old configurations??
Yes, the startup config should still be there as long as it is not deleted. However, it would still be worth backing it up just in case.
good tutorial, can you show how backup and recovery configuration on cisco switch not ios? thanks is advanced
do you need to use a RJ45 to USB console cable for this to work? or a USB to USB console cable will work as well?
Thanks for this. When I tried to send the file, it says READ ONLY FILE SYSTEM. Any suggestions please?
Hi Sir, I wanted to transfer the file
Below is my command:
copy xmodem:cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.06.02.SPA.bin flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.06.02.SPA.bin
but I received an error called the xmodem operation already closed by remote peer. Tried flash_init also cannot. Do you have any idea on it?
Hey Alvin, I had a few ideas:
Does the transfer fail to begin or does it timeout?
Are you currently using terra terminal?
Sometimes you need to have the file ready to click almost instantly to start the transfer so make sure you have the directory pre-selected.
That file is also very big so check that you have enough space on your flash.
This is not working for me i get an error that there is no such file in directory
After transfer xmodem Cisco on receive and data
ive tried 3 times but x modem wont transfer it pulls xmodem up it sits there for a minute then closes down
Hey Travis,
Are you using terra terminal?
Once you press enter on the xmodem command, the transfer needs to be initiated in the terra terminal window also.
To do this you need to go to File > Transfer > XMODEM > Send > Select your image (the .bin file) and then click open, the transfer should begin.
Make sure the image name matches the image name in the command (source and destination), sometimes if the transfer is not initiated in terra terminal it may timeout so try to do it a quickly as you can.
I hope this helps.
how can I get them as a home user? I can't pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for licenses or support, can I still get them from cisco web page?
You could contact Cisco support, often Cisco will let you download a new image because the old one has security vulnerabilities. You may also be able to find the image on the internet, i'm not saying you should do this option. But if you do make sure you check the hash because it could be a non-genuine image. What switch do you own?
@@stptech6156 I have a Cisco Catalyst 2960S-F24PS-L but I don't have the image. Cisco does let you download an image? on which case? my switch is EoL, if I ask them they could provide me with an image? that would be a dream come true tbh
i cannot find the iso file of cisco catalyst 3550 series
Hey Manish, if you don’t have a support contract with Cisco you will need to look around the net. Look on Cisco’s website for the image you need, copy the filename. Try googling the name of the image you want in quotations. Make sure you check the images md5 hash, this will ensure that it is a legitimate image.
Getting this error during copy IOS file:- switch: copy xmodem:c3750-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE12.bin flash:c3750-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE12.bin
Begin the Xmodem or Xmodem-1K transfer now...
CCCCCCCCCCxmodem:c3750-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE12.bin: I/O error
I have this problem too.How did you solve I/O error?
Please help me 🙏
I still get the following error:, any thoughts on how to remove it:
Loading "FLASH:flash:c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE5.bin"...FLASH:flash:c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE5.bin: no such device
Error loading "FLASH:flash:c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE5.bin"
it loads the file after this error though
