This is the best step-by-step configuration guide thus far. I was working on a 3750-48 POE switch that hadn't been upgraded since 3 years ago. I accidentally corrupted my flash files and was kicked in to rommon. Had to format the entire flash and used this video as a guide. Good job meen.
This saved my life today. Yes we are still using 3750s, and the gray market switch I got had a broken mode button and was COMPLETELY wiped when I got it. Nothing bootable about it. Couldnt use TFTP or anything to get the firmware on it, and this was my only option. Thank you for posting this.
Why is this process so hard to find on Cisco's website. This process is so easy, but when you look up this error you get everything but how to fix it. This is truly a life saver. Thanks
I erased existing IOS image of Cisco 2960 Switch and installed a wrong one and the switch didn't boot. This video helped me to restore the switch to its original glory!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Thanks, one switch saved... no clue why this EASY method is not all over the internet... all other methods out there involve complicated procedures/software/etc... thanks again!
I'm another happy viewer! Thank you so much. I deleted the IOS from a 3500 by mistake.. Working perfectly after following this vid. Very clear and precise! Thanks again!
I can't wait to get home and re watch this video. Thank you so much. I'm struggling with the 2950 from ebay like you've mentioned. I can't wait to attempt to put the current ios from the cisco site on it, and get back on with the ccna training
Yes this will work for the catalyst 2950 switch. Newer routers, such as the 2600 or later use the tftpdnld command from rommon to easily recover a corrupt or missing IOS image.
Tried to update a 2960G with a new Cisco ios ... not enough room so I saved the old bin image via tftp and then deleted it from the switches flash: to make room ... copied the new ios via tftp and it threw up on reload... now what?> Your tutorial saved me headache... copied the original bin image to a USB (since the network was down) - downloaded SecureCRT (Which took longer than your process with all their make an account BS) - and using your tutorial was able to XModem image back to flash and set the BOOT env variable. All I wanted was to flash it with a more robust ios that had web UI options and bam - 3 hours of work. Never again... I'll use CLI :)
@runderground Hi there it's me again. Just wanted to say thanks a lot for your video. I think the problem was the switch or something, because I bought a new one from ebay that had an old IOS flash and I followed your steps to the T "as they say" and thankfully now it's as good as new...... I'm going to try and fix my old and update you. Cheers...
Hi Vladimir. I have another issue. While using/learning Xmodem to reinstall IOS on my Cisco 2509, I was trying the delete flash and wanted to delete the IOS and then reinstall IOS c2500-is-l.123-24.bin. I deleted the partition and flash. While at Router(boot) i reset the configure-register to 0x3922 and put in 0x3922, did a reload and pushed yes. Now when I boot up I get (see below). I know this is probably due to the baud rate that i changed on the router and said yes at the reload. How do I get back into the router. I am sitting at the router I cannot boot into.I am trying to google this to see how to get back into the router if my Terminal emulator will not let it boot. I am also trying to at boot-up Ctrl-Break into router using SecureCRT. It will not let me disconnect put in 115200, reconnect and then get in. I am also tried placing an AUI on the router with TFTP but I do not how to assign an IP to the AUI if I can not get into router(boot) mode Do not know what to do next. This is all I get in SecureCRT: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Thank you for all of your help.
Much thanks, It worked with MobaXterm and an USB to serial adapter. Only the transfer of my c2960-lanbasek9-mz.150-2.SE11.bin (12 MB) file took about 4 hours even with ad BAUD rate of 115200...
Awesome Video! If anyone has an issue where the transfer just hangs, try stepping it down on the emulator and switch. I tried 57600 and it worked for me. I had Catalyst 3550 and 119200 did not work, not sure why.57600 still saved a ton of time. 8meg image took about 30min Thanks MAN!
Hello my name is Elisa and I'm a tough CCNA student. Doing some exercises on 1/1 Cisco switch by mistake I deleted the configuration. Can you kindly help me to install an OS the switch model and Catalyst 3500 XL. I know this fact doesn't make me a model student!

Hi! I just did a password recovery for Cisco 3660 by following the procedure below from Cisco site: www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/routers/3600-series-multiservice-platforms/22189-pswdrec-3600.html after setting back to config-register 0x2102 and did write memory then reload, I am now getting the error message below: device does not contain a valid magic number boot: cannot open "flash:" boot: cannot determine first file name on device "flash:" I'm now stuck on ROMMON mode... Mazen you can either download the iOS file from the Cisco.com (You'll require Cisco account for that) or download the iOS file from working switch using TFTP server.
Thanks for your replay, the problem is I don't have a Cisco account neither another working switch, I was wondering if there is another source that I can download those images from.
