- Historian and broadcaster Rafe Heydel-Mankoo attacks critics of Rule Britannia saying they are either historically ignorant or disingenuous by trying to link the song to the slave trade. He explains why the song has nothing to do with race or the slave trade but is a celebration of British liberty & Britons not being "slaves" like oppressed Europeans under the jackboots of the authoritarian French, Russian, Spanish monarchies etc.
If anything, race activists should sing the song with great gusto! It's precisely because Britannia eventually did rule the waves, that the Royal Navy was able to stop the Atlantic Slave Trade.
NB: Rule, Britannia! was written in the 1740s for a Masque about Alfred the Great - who was king hundreds of years before Britain had an Empire or anyone from England had ever set foot in Africa or Asia.
It doesn't say "Britannia RULES the waves" it says "Britannia RULE the waves". It was a challenge to go and become the greatest - to beat the Dutch etc. and become the pre-eminent sea power.
Audiences at the time would also have understood the song as a not so subtle warning to King George II and his Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole, not to consider becoming tyrannical like their European counterparts.

It's a sad testimony to the poor level of education that so many seem to have nowadays. They should watch Lucy Worsley; she explained how Rule Britannia was used by the group surrounding Frederick prince of Wales as a not so subtle attack on his father , George 11's obsession with fighting land battles in Europe( most famously at the last land battle he fought in, at Dettingen). Frederick recognised that it was more important to have an effective navy, which in the following century, was valuable in fighting the slave trade. I shouldn't have to explain this, but in the abysmal state of affairs in education, it is vital that people know the truth.

I'm not British but would describe myself as an Anglophile. Sometimes I think that I like Britain more than their own citizens; certainly their history. The British Royal Navy secured the oceans after vanquishing Napoleon and ushered in the Pax Britannica. It was the first superpower to use their dominance to secure and promote prosperity worldwide, and it brought about 100 years of the greatest progress and prosperity that the world had ever known.
Naturally if you focus on the negative you can find plenty to criticize, but on net the British Empire was an enormous benefit to the world and established an order which largely prevails today, in which democracy, self-determination, and economic advancement continue to move forward. Critics of Western civilization would reverse all that.
It's just a shame that when, inevitably, the torch had to be passed on, the USA went about making a complete hash of it.

For the criminal aspects is jailtime NOT a punishment, but a reward.
Then, those who were prosecuted, were nor really punished.
The girls were under age, and forced to prostitute; the minimum one might expect, that the money paid for that, is paid to the girls.
Meaning: by confiscation of possesions of perpetrators.
Of course, the families should be deported, as they lived from the misery of the girls.
Then-as far as I know the English law-also the clients were commiting crimes; it is not difficult in small city to identify them.
After the criminal cases (state) and the civil cases(girls) should the state again follow; I am sure the pakistani forgot to pay taxes.
It is sad, that state, and/or local authorities do still not stand up for their people.
