We’ve been pouring our hearts into a joint venture with Albins Transmissions (Australia) to advance transmission technology for these cars which has been stale for nearly a decade now.
Unfortunately the timeline ran tight and we didn’t get a chance to install and test the prototype 6-Speed Sequential Transmission before the World Cup Finals event.
We decided to take a big risk and fit it to the car and work out any bugs at the track, picking the trans up from the airport in Maryland on Tuesday night. This ended up being a massive undertaking with a large learning curve for us and meant many late nights with minimal sleep. The crew put their all into the effort but unfortunately we had issues during the event, many of which were self-inflicted, and we were not able to make any clean passes during the event.
On the last chance qualifier Q5 we finally made it down the track but bent valves and lost a cylinder in 2nd gear. James powered it down through the gears anyway trying to make it into the field which led to us just barely getting in at #32 with an 8.20 @ 174mph pass running on 3 cylinders from the 120’ mark on.
We fixed the cylinder head and were ready for E1 on Sunday but missed that we had damaged some of the shifting related components and it didn’t go into 5th gear. This resulted in a 1st round loss with an 8.59 @ 124mph coasting from 450’ on.
All was not lost as we learned from each mistake we made.
With what we learned from our failures during the event, we worked through the night after the race and on Monday we were able to get in on a private track rental and make a decent baseline pass just before heading home.
Unfortunately it shook the tires right on the hit and had a terrible 1.578 sixty foot (1.37-1.47 range is typical), but still went a 7.552 @ 212.23 mph at 2300lbs, no nitrous.
We got some good footage from the test pass, and the data is extremely exciting. We are already working on optimizing things with Albins & fixing our mistakes and we can’t wait for next year! #KeyToThe6s
