  • At long last I am finally getting one of my dream plants! The Yucca rostrata, commonly known as the Beaked Blue yucca is a gorgeous and cold hardy trunked yucca. Planting the yucca takes a bit of patience since it is a bareroot plant, but overtime it will take root and be moved out into the garden. For the time being I will be growing this yucca as a houseplant until it has rooted and acclimated to my climate. I look forward to planting this up in my cactus and succulent garden. :)

    I think the pot is perfect. With a minimalist pot the eye is really drawn to the showpiece of the plant- all that frilly frond magic! It really creates a nice composition with this plant.

    Nice plant, it can handle -20c, elate can handle even more. I plant or pot these in allmost 100% lava. Dont cut the leaves, it protects the trunk. Btw dont ty the leaves up like with a cordyline, you will get rot, just put an umbrella or something over it to protect from snow and rain when it gets to bad.

    • @Ritaontheroad
      @Ritaontheroad 5 лет назад +4

      @@TropicalPlantParty i have about 20 or more big ones i think, all different varieties. Hundreds of seedlings and small ones/hybrids. I live in a climate that gets about -5 yearly and -20rarely but 4months of allmost dayly rain in winter. Rostrata can handle wet, but i prefer linearis, elata, faxoniana, torreyi. They grow about 1m/10yrs trunk here with short 20-30c summers. You have a nice specimen, looks very blue, could be the sapphire skies or blue swan. Watch out for room humidity beeing to high, they will get spots on the leaves, dont water in winter, can get without water for months. But they like alot of water in summer.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 лет назад +4

      Oh wow! You have a yucca paradise! 😍
      Oh I don't plan on pruning the leaves from the trunks, i like how they look and they protect the plants. I was very surprised how blue this is, I'm curious to see if that is going to change with my soil when it goes into the ground. I'm glad you mentioned the spots with the humidity, I was thinking I should probably move it out of my grow space or to the corner with the other where the air is more dry. Thanks for the tips! Thrilled to have heard from a yucca guru!

    I've always been partial to Joshua Trees, but the rostrata looks pretty neat (and the foliage doesn't appear quite as dangerous as aloifolia, I've got battle scars from moving one of those).

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 лет назад +1

      Oh the foliage is much softer in comparison to the aloifolia. I used to have some large variegated aloifolias and I ended removing them bc they kept stabbing me and was worried my dogs would be injured.

    I just ordered one of these. I live in Knoxville, Tennessee (Zone 7a) with hot summers, but sometimes wet winters. I didn't realize it had to be kept dry in the winter when I ordered it. It should arrive in a week. It's probably smaller than your plant, but does have a trunk on it. Since it is going to be spring, should I still put it in a pot or plant it in full sun in the yard. My dirt is almost all clay, so should I did a deep hole and add some stone, sand or pebbles for drainage. I hate to lose it after dropping close to $200 on it. Thanks for all the info.

      Hi! I live in Texas zone 8a. We just had the coldest freeze in 100 years, snow, etc. I have 5 rostrata planted outside in the ground and they all made it. I didn’t have them wrapped or protected in any way. I did go out there and knock the ice off the “branches” because it was weighing them down. I don’t know about my soil, the nursery where I bought them did the planting.

    Do you plan on keeping it in the ground??? They are hardy to zone 5b but cannot handle any snow at all just so you know they will need a plastic cover in winter just for anti moisture but not cold!

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 лет назад +1

      I'm undecided, but ultimately would like to plant them outside someday. If I do I will protecting them from moisture, even though the ones I see grown around are never covered, just not worth the risk to me since they are expensive and not so easy to come by.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  Месяц назад +1

      Still have it! Nothing much has happened with it, could use a repot at this point. That palm was a massive spindle palm! I loved it so much but eventually it got to be way to heavy to get in and out, was popping tires on the tree cart and even split some muscles (wont go into detail) the last time I moved it.
