I’ve been having a lot of luck with volcano sand as a soil conditioner. It’s cheap and a little goes a long way. Breaks up and prevents clumping more effectively than hort/sharp sand and it’s not as heavy either.

Thanks for the video! Love your channel. I haven't had a hobby in a long time and Japanese maples are what I have started Along with some other regular plant. I have been purchasing a lot of different Hibiscus's this year and Asian and oriental lilies.
I am transplanting volunteer seedlingsThat have been popping up all over my parents house and just around town. I am using Canadian spanglem peat moss and perlite. I've been looking for a good pine mulch to use but have not been satisfied locally. I just a week ago bought a bag of Happy Frog soil conditioner and have started to mix that in. I was wondering if I could mix some Black Kow manure that I have purchased. I'm a manager at Tractor Supply so I get a discount on stuff LOL. Wondering what your thought is on the Black Kow?
Also one product that I endorse wholeheartedly for almost everything is Super Thrive. It's like steroids for plants and it's not fertilizer. Sure you know all about it. Is that good for Japanese maples? Have not used it on JM yet only ALL other plants.

Great update video. please keep them coming. I have a question that possibly other people have. You may even want to discuss it in a video possibly. I fell in love with Japanese maples after finding your channel. And bought a few as well as collected seedlings and also collected seeds to try to get more maples. I live in British Columbia Canada and we had a very interesting winter to say the least. Spells with -10 and I noticed this summer. A lot of my seedlings did not push out leaves. As well as my approximate 4 foot tall Bloodgood maple seems to be dormant still. So my question to you is is there a way to check if your trees Are dead? Can they stay dormant and come back another year? Is it possible to graft onto them as long as the root is still good? Any information you have would be great. Thanks again for the videos. I appreciate all the information you put out for us.

If your trees are in pots, it is most likely the roots that are dead. You need to bring potted Japanese Maples into an unheated garage or greenhouse for the winter.

Jonny, do you ever have issues with squirrels/chipmunks digging around in your seedlings? If so, have you found any successful methods to prevent or minimize it?

Great job, one question, what do you name them when you sell them? Or do you keep them all yourself?

Thanks for the update! Do you fertilize your seedlings or wait until they are older?

I wait until they are at least 1 year old before fertilizing them.

Have thought of getting a portable cement mixing machine to make life easier.

Hello, my japanese maple cuttings which I took 2 weeks ago are getting dark edges around the leaves, is this sign of too much or too little water? I am spraying around 30 ml on the soil and leaves daily (60cm x 30 cm box) but I'm doing something wrong. Also, I've used Clonex GEL for root growth and mixed the water with clonex Pro Start solution.

You started your cuttings way too early in the year! You need to take them in mid summer for best success.

@@JonnyMaple Okay, I'll try again then. If the drainage is good (50% perlite 50% pete moss and with holes on the bottom of the plastic box) can I overwater the cuttings if I spray a liter a day? Cause I figure the water will draing through the holes, but any suggestions in that regard? Btw. thanks for the swift answers

Will you actually get full trees from rooting cuttings like this or does this dwarf the cutting?
