  • Taking a quick look at GOODaaa's new USB solar power bank. This model has 5 built in folding solar panels with about 5 watts of charging power. I will compare it to one of their other models with a single solar panel and do some basic tests in the sun and on the workbench. Hope you enjoy the video! -Dave

    The problem with these solar power units is having to put them in direct sunlight to charge. That heat makes you fear damage. You mention this though.

      @JimmyCall An ironic problem to solve! Even the manual mentions it... but you can wrap a white towel around the power bank. I do this when recording out in the sun to protect my power banks. Works OK I think

      @@solarpoweredge will the bank still charge if you cover the main panel? You did say parallel config, so should.

      @JimmyCall Yes, it's a trade-off. Lose 1 panel worth of charging, but increased safety in direct sun during summer. I think sun through a window indoors would be perfectly fine to use all 5 panels. In winter when it's cold, it shouldn't be a problem at all

    I have the X-Dragon 4 panel version & it's delivered from day one. great for my old phone & tablet.
    P.s Do you think a heat sink would help with the over heating issue, maybe an aluminium plate attached to the underside?

      @mackychloe Nice! Well you are really thinking outside the box :D I don't know how exactly to integrate a heat sink on this device, but for sure - anything is possible. The "cheapest" strategy would be to separate / insulate the lithium ion battery from heat caused by sun exposure. I understand it's very ironic to have a solar power bank that can't get hot in the sun. The simplest fix I have found is the white towel wrapped around the battery part... I lose some charging power but it seems to work fine and is safe!

      @@solarpoweredge Thanks for replying. I'm not really tech savvy so the idea of stripping down to the battery is far beyond me lol .The towel thing is a neat little trick, i'll defo' keep in mind. My other idea is to somehow isolate the battery section in a vented transparent box with a tiny fan to push out accumulated heat.
      P.s Great channel btw.

    And just as you were saying that the first battery bank had only 1.3W of solar charging power I instantly thought hmmmm why doesn't someone make a battery bank with a little fold out solar blanket.... And then you show it!
    I purchased one similar to the first one years ago, it seemed like a good idea.... I remember putting it in the window to charge and realising that it was incredibly useless.... I eventually opened it up and found that one of the 3 batteries was a piece of wood in a battery bag.... It looked like a battery! That explained why it couldn't keep my phone charged all day..... I still have the fake battery to remind me of the fake stuff available out there!

    I LIKE!!!!!! I just fear the constant open close of the wire connect will fatigue and break over time

      @peterxyz3541 Good point... I found the wire in each cloth tab near the edge... I figure, if it breaks I'd be able to repair it. I was tempted to cut the panels to look at the wires, but the video would be too tedious :D

    I got 20 dollar one solar charges crap. Like 2 percent of charge after 1/2 hour of sun exposure

      @AintPopular Yeah a "power-bank sized" solar panel can trickle charge but it's slow. With 5 panels it's enough to supplement normal charging out in the field

      @@solarpoweredge same same brother once i seen a flashlight that can put out over 5000LM i knew it was going to be fun collecting flashlights and many other products that run off battery power man LEDS and WIRE AND INVERTERS AND SOLAR PANELS THAT COLLECT FREE ENERGY MAN I CANT GET ENOUGH OF IT
