    Fascinating little project sir. Next time would it be possible to use a laser thermometer to check the temp of the diodes? It would also be interesting to see what a heat camera reveals about the setup.

    I just received mine damaged right out of the box. Seems like I got a reviewed one because someone took off the lid and the wires were all exposed and a screw fell out of the case. SMH, Also the corner of the battery case is cracked too. I'm Hoping wattcycle will make this right. I was looking forward to putting this battery in my FWC set up. I will post back on here what the outcome is

    a lot of the cheap AC lawnmowers and weed-eaters as well as shop-vacs can be powered with DC because they have brushed motors and use an AC to DC rectifier to feed the motors

    I have a simple string of 100W incandescent bulbs to utilize my solar excess. It's a 48V system producing up to 75V. Didn't realize I was leaving Wattage on the table. I wonder if I could use relays to vary the number of bulbs in use, to crudely regulate the MPPT. . . .

      Awesome, you could use parallel diodes chains to extract a few more watts of heat from existing solar panels by tracking a more efficient voltage. perfect use of simple technology :)

    What would cause a solar array putting out 130Vdc in series, when directly connected to a Water heater element, The voltage drops to like 10Vdc nothing else is connected?

      Careful with the HVDC... I'd test each panel individually before putting them in series. It's impossible to guess from here but that's where I'd start

      No problem man... I recommend using an ohmmeter to check the resistance of the load. It probably doesn't match the solar panels. Here's a good video to start learning more.       Welcome sir. Yes that would work. While I love direct PV heating, I do sometimes use batteries to run heaters. Another option is thermal storage. Currently testing this with a hot water tank.

    I like what you are doing and have learned some important things. Thanks for sharing this. I have some thoughts you may want to consider. 1. load matching is important to the best efficiency and is key to an hands off system - manual load matching is not practical for me or others. Have you considered trying this? 1. Connect, for example, three loads in series and then shorting one load out at a time using two relays (i know relays are expensive) then operate the relays using a diode string to operate the relays to adjust the load automatically? The load matching could then be automatic. There also could be 4 or 5 loads in series with more relays but hopefully you get the idea. 2. Instead of using a fixed solar panel pointing south, use solar panels point east and west only. This removes peak loads in the middle of the day but is compensated by higher outputs outside the mid day. This reduces the amount of resistance load matching required with idea #1. More panels are required but the panels will remain cooler and that compensates for the lost mid day direct sun light. If they are mounted vertically they will not collect as much snow. There are videos on this positioning concept on RUclips. Use of used panels will compensate the extra panels required.

      Hello, glad this video was useful. I use parallel diode chains (diode strings) to dynamically match nichrome heaters to the volts-max-power region of the solar panel array.       I like your idea about using something to automate the load-matching. Arranging solar panels in an arc makes sense too, it's kind of like a solar tracker. One thing I've found about solar electric heating, it makes sense to add more panels. More heat is a good thing :)

      No problem at all! Can use a big DC contactor too. That AC switch won't be bothered by a few miliamps. Same for the thermal cutout switch. With larger space heaters the contactor can be mounted internally, I like my heaters to look as OEM as possible

      Hello, in my opinion a 300w electric space heater is a very reasonable load for this battery. That would run about 12 hours and is only suitable for a small space or workshop.     Not that I know how or am capable of doing this (my mind always tells me yes you can TRY), so after looking up the cost of supplies, I can see why no one (company) is probably making them. That thermal blanket really is costly, which would make the product $$ on the open market. Now if manufacturers would sell them, I'd purchase in a heartbeat.

      I would immediately buy 2 if they were available with quality construction and affordable price... hopefully a company will pick up the idea and start manufacturing. I think 25 bucks is reasonable for a simple version with no fancy add-ons

      Higher voltage can be more efficient at transmitting DC power. On the other hand 48v systems and inverters often cost more, and there are more cells in series and therefore increased chances of failure in that regard. Therefore, we can see engineering is about costs and tradeoffs. After over 10 years I tended to stick with 12v equipment as it is cheaper and more widely available, while using direct PV2L to drive larger loads such as heating etc. If cost was no object, I'd consider 48v, 72v, 96v or above to maximize efficiency :)

    This is an excellent overview for people that already have some background in solar. It doesn’t explain things like grid-tie vs. grid-tie with battery storage vs. off-grid vs. portable power station and using extension cords. I have a partial off-grid 24V/2.4 kWh LFP plus 400W solar array I use to feed just one or two 120V circuits in my house using a manual transfer switch. I didn’t realize some MC4 connectors could be poor quality and the larger panels could be fragile. I agree with you that home solar might not pay for itself, especially if you have a grid tie solar+battery that you paid to have installed (or worse, lease to buy).

    A lot of modern TVs can run directly on 12v DC. Look at the TV circuit board for a Jst micro connector plugin. The TV circuit board should be labeled "PWR Upgrade" or something similar. The Jst micro connector can be wired directly to a 12v car cigarette lighter plugin.

      @@solarpoweredge A Hisense 40A4K 40 inch screen at Best Buy cost $140 and includes the 12v "PWR Upgrade" plug on the circuit board. The same size 40 inch screen 12v DC TV for another brand on Amazon cost $500.

    Thanks, much more understandable than the manual. And yes, I took have a damaged one that I will tear down and try to get working. I'm hopeful because it exploded a 100uA capacitor and blew the board trace leading to the current shunt. LMK when you get around to your tear down.

    Haven't watched yet but I sure hope this is going to be actionable. Inverter leaching is such a pain for things you'd rather leave plugged in all the time like a freezer. Sure you _can_ just run it for a couple hours a day during winter (when solar energy is sparce where I live) to top off the cold, but that's such a hassel. (And dedicated DC appliances are so expensive in many cases)

      Bypassing the inverter is good whenever possible... I love direct DC solar power. This video is to encourage safety when converting AC appliances to DC... don't want a house fire... trying set a good example :)

      Hello, it was a recycled unit. But it looks to me like the cheap "overseas" Danfoss knock offs on a popular auction site. They are probably intended for freezers fridges etc. nothing exotic at all. I plan to find a better compressor and expand the system to a permanent installation... as soon as humanly possible that is

    What diods are you using? I want to regulate my 3700 watt solar array down to a max voltage of 400vdc I got a diod sample pack with like 20 different ones... If you could put me in the ballpark of which ones I should be using, that would be amazing!

    Fantastic video! Heavier duty relay/switch contacts wont be enough, additional "break" mechanisms like springs and cams driven by a motor would be necessary - AC fundamentally has zero crossing that quenches the arc - something DC cannot provide without modifications. Now if someone designed a system that would put in zero crossings into DC, that could be a start of something truly innovative!

      @subhobroto Thank you :) great ideas... putting zero points into the DC is brilliant. There has to be a way. PS a DC EV contactor seems to work nice for opening DC circuits, although they're clunky and require a small power source

    Also, if it does not burn out it WILL weld together expressly with 120 vdc. It will do it every time. I have done it.

    Yep! You confirmed my thoughts! DC voltage in conjunction with the amperage is just like welding and has to have heavier duty contacts as well as a possibly necessary arc/spark breaker to interrupt the circuit. A/C definitely has its place safety of energy transference as well as distance transference with minimal energy loss. I learned early on that DC welding always gave a better looking bead without as much spatter!!!

    Nice review. If i didn't already have my ecoflow delta's.. this would be a good option. Now.. let me borrow that parabolic heater. My propane ran out a few hours ago.. and still in bed. Too cold to go swap it out for a full bottle. 😁

    You could make a decent product from this… Stainless steel Thermos with a flexible solar panel wrapped around its diameter (for storage) which you can unfurl for when you want to boil some water. I would buy that. 😅 *edit* even those low early morning (low sun) temperatures would be good for coffee, perfect for camping. 🤗

    I just dont understand why people dont screw space heaters to the floor. Before I got my diesel heater in my rv I had a little space heater which really didn't do much heating but it was all I had at the time. I had a puppy and the puppy frequently had the zoomies and would knock the heater over and that would turn it off of course. I was frustrated at constantly having to get up and set it back up so I took it apart and shot some deck screws through the bottom and managed to get it back together. No more tipping, no more worries.

      A few screws or even a fireproof metal enclosure are totally a legitimate way of adding safety. Here in our house we can't do that to our floor though. And the solar heaters are constantly moved around the place. The other consideration is the high temp thermal cutout - same problem. it can weld shut with DC. That tiny little switch could make the difference between a fire and no fire, or a close call. My preference is mostly to use a thermal fuse in series. And/or use existing AC switches only for "signaling" a heavy duty DC contactor which can break the circuit very easily. (PS I will upload a video soon showing what DC does to AC switches)

    After watching your video. I started searching on how to hook a grid tie inverter up the safe way. Not much found about it. Tell me if you know if this is one way to do it safely. Hooking it (Single phase) in the breaker box to the the least loaded main of the two above the breakers and to the neutral. To me it would be like power coming in. I'm about to hook one up and and I know what you said is true. VERY WELL PUT. Your video is the only one I have found about what you explained.

      @basilkey2949 Hello, glad you liked this video! As far as the hookup, you're on the right track. I would suggest installing a separate breaker for the GTI if possible. Only my opinion: I like the idea of feeding the most-loaded phase in the panel (through a dedicated breaker). Because why not use up most of the solar power with ones own appliances first vs. feeding it back to the grid. And I hope I did not misunderstand your question - if so let me know

    Can a 12V 120W peltier water cooler with two 12V cooling fans (computer type cooling fans) be powered directly by a solar panel without using an MPPT or PWM charge controller and solar battery? If so, how many watts would the solar panel need to be?

      @bradlyons7046 Sure it's possible, I did a lot of tests with peltiers plus 100w solar panels a few months back. I'd suggest starting with a 100w solar panel minimum, and do some experiments to see how they perform. Before spending further on the project. (Even 1 or 2 Peltiers can use up a lot of power so a single panel might not be enough)
