Would love to hear about some of the Greek Islands I didn't get the chance to talk about, also if you are currently on one of these islands let me know where you're watching from!
Naxos and Paros
You didnt mention that ionian islands are also called Eptanhsa which means 7 islands
Small note: There actually were human inhabitants in Greece and most of the islands by the time the ancient greeks migrated into the area, historians call them "Western Hunter Gatherer" or WHG, within the "European Early Modern Human", or EEMH branch. There was some intermixing but the evidence seems to show most of these groups went into a rapid decline as their populations were eclipsed by the new farming communities coming from across the aegean.
Hi, i'm Greek and i love your work. The name Rhodes is from an ancient Greek Myth. The myth is about for a goddess-nymph of the Island of Rhodes with the same name with the island. She was the wife of the god Helios(Ηelios, the God of Sun) and a daughter of Poseidon by one of three goddesses--Amphitrite and Halia. Because she was wife of Helios, the men they were honored God Helios. The name of Mykonos is from a hero with name Mykonos. He was from Euboea (or Evia).The name is from the ancient word "boos"(bull).The "eu" means "good". So name Euboea means something like "good bulls". Because i love etymology in Greek names i can help you, in the future, (if you wish) for other Greek names.

"It comes from the Greek Lefkos meaning white"
Fun fact: The Greek can be transcribed into the latin alphabet as both lefkos and leukos. Both are used (though I'm not sure why). This is why the scientific name for white blood cells is leukocytes (white bodies).
Because in greek the eu (ευ) can be pronounced as "èf" or "èv"
I've seen some english charts having the island as Levkas as well. Lefkos is phonetically correct but leukos is the right spelling.
Ancient Greek ευ was pronounced eu (εου) but then the two vowels were made to be pronounced faster like ef
Like the words pneumonia or pneuma actually spelled like pnevmonia or pnevma in Greek, while the British didn't acknowledge that and spelled them like newmonia or newma
@@TMPOUZI well, not exactly, the Greek words are written as πνευμονία (pneumonia) and πνεύμα (pneuma) but in modern Greek the u letter after a or e is pronounced as v or f due to the shortening of the ancient oo sound of hupsilon. However, in English the pronunciation doesn't follow clear-cut rules that apply in every case. Generally in English, the au is pronounced as o and eu is ew.
Wait... so Amorgos wasn’t named after the sussy imposter?

Thats why Switzerland in greek is Elvetia
Mexico’s official name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos or United Mexican States.
In Greek it's actually called Ελβετία ( Helvetia ) instead of Switzerland. Also, France is instead called Γαλλία ( Gallia ) probably deriving from the Latin name as well as the ancient Greek name of Γαλατια ( Galatia ) meaning " the land of the milk-white skin people ( γαλα = gala = milk ). It's quite surprising how the name changed to France for most of the latin languages, but remained Gallia in Greek.

Although not mentioned in the video, Aegeus' story is quite interesting.
Theseus had made a deal with his father, Aegeus: when his ship returned from Crete, after the expedition that Theseus led to kill the Minotaur, if he was killed, his sailors would keep the original black sails. Otherwise they would change to white sails, in case they succeded. This way his father would know the outcome upon seeing the ship from Cape Sounio, where he waited for his son to return. Theseus successfully killed the beast and returned alive, but the crew was celebrating the victory and forgot to change the sails. Upon seeing the black sails, Aegeus believed his son had been slain and threw himself in the sea, commiting suicide. That sea received the name "Aegean Sea" in his honor.

I think if you were to make a video about countries' official names you should avoid countries that are simply called The Republic [Commonly Known Country Name]
Not to be that person but I need to add something to what you said in 6:16. My grandparents are immigrants from Chios, we have a house there, it's a beautiful island with rich history. It's one of the several islands that claims to have been the home of Homer, and is mentioned in the Odyssey. It was a prosperous island during the classical age, and flip-flopped between Athens and Sparta during the Peloponnesian War. It is most known for growing the mastic tree, which has a sap that Xiotes put in just about everything. The tree only grows on Chios. There are several canonized saints from the Orthodox Church from the island, such as Agia Markella, and the namesake of my granparents' village, Agios Giorgios Sikousis. During the Byzantine era, it was eventually handed over to the Genovese, who prioritized it as a trading post. During the Greek Revolution, it was the site of a terrible massacre in 1822 that won the world over to the Greek cause after Ottoman troops slaughtered tens of thousands of innocent people, and the island never really recovered its affluence after that.
Worth to mention, we Greeks don't call the islands in the Ionian sea "Ionian islands" we call them "Heptanese islands" (eptanisa).
ευχαριστώ πολύ, i didn't know that! Very interesting
They named it "Μεσόγειος / Mediterranean" which means "μέση γη - middle ground / earth", because they lived there before the great flood of Deucalion. And of course after the disaster, those who remained, named all the areas around the sea that had filled the Mediterranean with the original root "αιγ / aeg", which is the wild goat which they saw on the steep shores then.
Αίγ-ινα/Aegina, Αίγ-υπτος/Aegypt, Αιγ-ιαλός/Aegialos=beach, Αιγ-άλεων/Aegaleon mount, Αιγ-αίον/Aegian Sea...
Mediterranean Sea, is the exact Latin translation of the Greek name: Μεσόγειος / Mesogios, which means ... middle earth > medi-terra. This name is ancient and shows us that the area was inhabited by the Greeks before the great flood (ie the entrance of the Atlantic from the columns of Herakles, today's Straits of Gibraltar) which of course was dry, with perhaps small lakes, but permeable without the use of ships.

They didn't originate from there. They originally were from the mainland, and later during the 1st and 2nd greek colonization they colonized Italy and Asia Minor.
@J Z Χαχα ναι περίπου
McAlkis it was during the first, plus no one lived on coastal Anatolia rlly anyway except for Trojans we’re gone and were Greek anyway
@@Dourios_96 Nope man, sorry. The original Greek tribes came from Northern Greece, the Ionians and the Aeolians first migrated south and later colonized everything, the Dorians migrated some centuries later and the Macedonians never went souther than Thessaly. Asia Minor was not originally inhabited by Greeks, but by Lycians, Hitties etc.
Ηλίας Ντέλλας ρε φίλε μπέρδεψες τα βελάκια, that’s exactly the opposite of what was written. It also makes sense to expand to Asia Minor and not the other way around, since it was the Dorian invasion that pushed the other greek tribes to migrate.

Ionians were one of the Greek tribes that lived in asia minor, they were forced to move there after the descent of the Dorians, and they were pretty keen on setting up colonies. The exact number of Greek islands according to my research to date is 9.838 - They are divided in two main areas: 1.315 in the Ionian Sea & 8.110 in the Aegean (and Eastern Mediterranean). Hope this helps
Hmm. I imagine at least some of the Greek islands were inhabited before the 'Greeks' (or at least, Indo-European speakers) lived on them. The earliest modern humans in the region were there by 44,000 years ago, and the Indo-European languages and cultures probably spread with agriculture 6000-4000 years ago. Crete at least has settlements before that, and the Minoans may or may not have even been Indo-European speakers.
There were some places and islands with people called Pelasgoi (probably an umbrella term) by the Greeks, who didn’t speak greek until after the classical age. Those were Lemnos and some eastern areas of Crete where Eteokrites lived for example.

Santorini's Greek-origin name is "Thera", but in Greek, "Santorini "is also used for the island and is in fact the name used far more often than "Thera". In the Greek language, both names are treated as feminine nouns.

Every country has a Political Name being the full name and a Short Name for non-political situations except for Canada which has only one name.
Ireland has only 1 name too. Ireland is just called Ireland or Éire (in Irish) it has no political name. People call it the Republic of Ireland however this is false and is just used to distinguish it from Northern Ireland
@@JfkJames
In short the political name is Ireland but in non-political situations people incorrectly call the country Republic of Ireland.
So
Political Name: Ireland
Non-Political Name: Ireland (but more often incorrectly called the "Republic of Ireland")
Ireland is weird.
Mod Maker Agreed, but don’t forget it can also be called Éire too, but that’s not in English so I guess it doesn’t apply to the rest of the world
@@JfkJames
Irish = Éire
English = Ireland
Polish = Irlandia
I am a Pole.
It is not the English name but the Irish name. Why do the Irish need to specify that their country is called Éire in Irish, we Poles don't specify that in Polish our country is called Polska.
Mod Maker it’s just because Ireland has 2 official languages therefore we have 2 official names, Poland only has 1 official language therefore it has 1 official name.
I would love to see a video about countries having two names! Your videos are great btw 😊

@@belstar1128 to be honest you are part right if not wrong completely first this language was spoken *ONLY* in Cyprus which today its not under the Hellenic Republic administration, secondly although mildly different from the greek language i could spot some common letters which lets me to believe that *if* it's not a old greek dialect it has *at least* some similarities my opinion is that it is related to the Greek language in some way or another
kostas T.S.S But new DNA studies now show that Minoans & Mycenaeans were clearly related peoples..🤷🏻♂️
One very famous ancient Greek poet, "Sappho the lesbian" (meaning she was from Lesbos, similar to "Thales the milissian" was from Milissos) was (also famously) homosexual. So the word "lesbian" (lesvia in greek pronucnation that means a woman from Lesbos) became a synonymous with female homosexuals in greek.
1:50 Yes pls
the Greek islands are at the top of my places to visit list.
There are so many places I want to visit. When I get the money 😬
I think rhodes has something to do with rodo(ρωδο) meanig rose
Ρόδο - rose or ρόδι - pomegranate, the Italians called it "L' isola delle rose" - The island of roses, yet the flower symbol of the island is the ibiscus. As for the myth, personally I much prefer the one about how the Gods forgot Helios the day they parted the world between them and when he came back from work that evening he was furius, so Zeus decreted the very first land to face on earth would be of Helios, and that happened to be Rhodes.
Definitely do a video on the double names of most countries!
Make a documentary about Turkey and their stolen land and stolen history from the Greeks (Ayia Sofia, Efesus, Troy, Cappadocia......... the list is endless)
Turkey didn't stole from anybody.
@@someturkishdudedoingintere9091 Tell me what history you have of your own?
The Ayia Sofia was Byzantine and the rest all built by Greeks and Armenians.
@@someturkishdudedoingintere9091 How come you're Turkish but your profile picture is the European Union flag lmao
In Urdu, Greece is called "Yunan." Probably derived from "Ionian."
It’s all Greek to me.
Bad Shakespearean pun
In Greek the idiom goes: it sounds chinese to me
You should definitely make a video on the different names of countries that would be very interesting
