Best pop ballad of all time. Lyrics, synth, melody, keyboard, everything. So timeless. If it would be released today it would still be relevant and unique
I think you're being a lil to harsh.. it's clear Mr. Leonard hasn't ( maybe )received all the recognition and fame he deserves.. but surely the Madonna and the Leonard team gave us some of the best music of all time and they both made a shit load of money.. I guess what i'm trying to say is: gut lets me they're both happy where they stand..
Love this version. Patrick Leonard has often stated that while he wrote the main chords/melody, and she wrote the lyrics quickly, that Madonna wrote the "if I ran away" bridge all by herself in a separate room. It's the best part of the song. He's often given her credit for melodies and chord changes even though she was primarily the lyricist (see: Like A Prayer intro, "I hear you call MY name", he said it was her idea to take the chord up from the 3-chord intro he'd written).
Beautiful, beautiful!! Madonna´s ballads are amazing.. all in the Something to Remember album: - Love Don't Live Here Anymore - Crazy for You - Live to Tell - This Used to Be My Playground - Oh, Father - You'll See - Rain
In my opinion reached the top with this song. You can hear the crispness in her voice, no hesitation where she is taking the lyrics. I don't know if I can play it loud enough to ever satisfy me.
If I ran away I'd never have the strength to go very far How would they hear the beating of my heart...? Will it grow cold? The secret that I hide Will I grow old? How will they hear? When will they learn? How will they know...?
This tells us that people can keep a secret no matter what. I wish more songs were sung from the heart instead of making shit up. I'M up listening to my song because I can really relax and think about the best times in my life in the past. Now my life consists of working all the time and there's nothing to do to have fun with out getting in trouble.
According to Patrick Leonard, that bridge was all her, because, according to him, he wouldn't have written those lyrics or melody. She wrote almost all the lyrics of the song herself.
This is also the theme song on the soundtrack for the movie At Close Range with Sean Penn, Chis Penn, Christopher Walken, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Crispin Glover. The movie, based on a true story, was released in 1986. It is one of my all time favorite movies. It's hard to watch, a real soul shaker of a drama. I have a select few that I love more than others and this is one of them. Definitely one to rent or find on the internet. It is the movie that brought me here once again...I was longing to here the haunting sound of Madonna's voice on this song.
Such a moving track. Will and have always loved this song. It sounds basically like the final version except for the guitar parts and some keyboard licks
When I think of the 80s, I think of Madonna. She owned that decade. I was born in 1979 I remember her exploding onto the scene. Loved her movie Who's that girl as well. The 80s was a special decade.
I really wish synthizers would return to modern music foray. The 80s overexploited synth to the point the music industry abandoned it. There was some good songs that use synth that came out around the time of this song: Cry Little Sister & Toy Soldiers somehow seem stylistically the same to me with this song.
One of if not my Favorite Song. Love this version.. can't believe it's a Demo! I truly miss the music of my youth... Not because I'm old but because of the raw talent!
This is 1 of my fav songs from Madonna & I've been lucky enough to have seen her perform it the 3 times she's performed it live in concert at The Who's That Girl Tour & The Blonde Ambition Tour & The Confessions Tour. All 3 times she just sounded beautiful & amazing & this song is so haunting. It truly is in my top 5 fav Madonna songs.
I understand Patrick Leonard wanted to produce an LP with Madonna, and show the record company (Sire/Warner Bros.) that it didn't need to take FOUR MILLION DOLLARS to do so, like the beforehand "Like A Virgin" album did. Darn tootin', he was right, I think he said he & she did it for something like $450,000 and it turned that over quite a number of times, but to date, I don't think it nearly brought back in the revenue as "Virgin" did here in the USA...close, but not quite. Here we find "Live To Tell" in it's full demo mix form, although from the same sessions as the final mix, except this version does not include the "vamp" electric guitar in the second verse (probably performed by Bruce Gaitsch) and not the extra synth pads in the interim musical bridge. Also noted, the separately tracked "distorted-fuzz-box" electric guitar is heightened in this mix...and the most different element indeed is the end (as another reviewer stated) as this one ends with a natural "cliff-hanger" type end, opposed to the "fade" end, in the final mix. Also, mysteriously, the vocal refrain is edited (for some oddball reason) here at the end...for in the final mix, as the song begins to fade, one can hear Madonna clearly ramp up and modulate her refrain on the line, "I've Learned My Lesson Well!!!", but in this here "demo version", which seems to be the full version, it is gone! (Stranger things have happened in this world...) - BCRadio
Well... "Like a virgin" had a great impact in the USA, but I would say that here, in Europe, "True blue" had a greater impact both economic and socially... This album established her as 80s pop culture... In my opinion, all her 80s albums are great, and I think "Like a virgin" was maturer than what people would think... At last she was a grown woman, more than 25, I dont think that a teenager, like Britney in her beginings, could attracted a public as diverse as Madonna did
By the way both versions, demo and commerciar realese, are excellent. This version is, for me, more rough and raw, and I like it. Why do you think the changed it for the final version? And... "Like a virgin" costed so much money???
@@jaumefrigola22 Nile Rogers, who produced Like a Virgin, said that because of the perfection they both reached together he thought they would make pair forever, but nobody can take over Madonna, good or not. L.A.V. is beyond a mature work of art, I wish they,'ll come back together one day, such as Pat Leonard.
exquisite. Madonna is such an underrated vocalist, particularly with tracks like this. In my opinion, talent shows have skewed what is understood as 'good singing'. Vocal acrobatics are fine and have a place, but where is the emotion and respect for the listener's ear as demonstrated here?
According to Patrick Leonard, the producer of this song, the final song used her vocals in the demo. After she writes the song, she singing a demo to present to the realisators of At Close Range. Because this song talk about the wiew of a man, he searche many singers mans to sing this song (like Michael Jackson). All refused this song. After all mans singers refused this song, Leonard finally used the Madonna vocals in the demo and produced this song and the rest was the history. She only recording one time and never re-recorded again in the studio. This song help Madonna to conquers a more mature public, after she was the idols of the more younger public and was n.1 in United States.
Pat Leonard has said in interviews...the first was we used. We built the song around the vocals. You can even hear Madonna crumpling up a piece of paper toward the end of the record. She was spot on with the vocal, and that first take the last.
Madonna, my beautiful Lady Evita-You can cry on my shoulder anytime! I Love You! Live to Tell-Best Detroit Concerto Ever! Madonna-Love in my heart, always!
Best pop ballad of all time. Lyrics, synth, melody, keyboard, everything. So timeless. If it would be released today it would still be relevant and unique

Something about this song and her voice completely captivates you
What a great era of music. Everything well thought out down to the smallest, faintest note.
Jet Ty ..I love the raw version and the Instrumental tells a story :)
blastercombo audio No argument there.

The if I ran away bridge is the best/ most important part of this song and prob of any Madonna song ever
A legendary classic,,,, definitely one of her finest songs ❤.
Beautiful, beautiful!!
Madonna´s ballads are amazing.. all in the Something to Remember album:
- Love Don't Live Here Anymore
- Crazy for You
- Live to Tell
- This Used to Be My Playground
- Oh, Father
- You'll See

Madonna unpolished, raw and what a beautiful ending, I love how her voice falters for a split second, it makes is all more real
Still love this and listening to here in 2020
her voice is stunning and so captivating
3:52 - 4:28 is BY FAR the best part of the song. Just incredibly moving.
They used her vocals from that in the final song
The ending on this version is EVERYTHING
G. Noah K. Nah... its obvious u know shit.
it gives a sense of building, even though it's just repeating
I agree it's beautiful the ending
They should have kept it that way instead of the fade out.
In my opinion reached the top with this song. You can hear the crispness in her voice, no hesitation where she is taking the lyrics. I don't know if I can play it loud enough to ever satisfy me.
this woman is just divine. AN OUTSTANDING DIVA! God bless her always.
better that Whitney???oh coemon

If I ran away
I'd never have the strength to go very far
How would they hear the beating of my heart...?
Will it grow cold?
The secret that I hide
Will I grow old?
How will they hear?
When will they learn?
How will they know...?
Her best shit!

Wow... that exact bridge part, those exact words. Its what got me hooked to this song since i was a kid many many years ago. THANKS.

Another one of those times in the 80's when a song's popularity far eclipsed that of the film it was released with.
Loretta Harden Madonna should have played the female lead in the movie.
Yupp I still own it on VHS
Such a moving track. Will and have always loved this song. It sounds basically like the final version except for the guitar parts and some keyboard licks
Except the full first verse.
Great to hear the alternative take though.
Madonna is a great singer. Right note at the right time. Great "turn of phrase". Love her forever.
I haven't heard this in a while. I feel like I just went through a time machine ...this song took me back to when I was a little sister forreal.
still gives me chills every time I listen to this song, love it
One of the the best songs ever made.

The True Blue album is her best selling album worldwide and Like a Virgin is best in US sales only
I was not ready for the fall...I think I was 16 when this came out...and it was so beautifully haunting. Thank you for this version.
It's not like I'm the biggest Madonna fan in the world, but this is a great song.
Another song I will always love! Modonna has been in the music game since like forever! So many hits that I have lost count.
So awesome a song, and the creative artistry behind it...Leonard's music, with Madonna's lyrics... beautiful!
Amo essa música!
Musica muito linda e marcante!
Her Best Art Song-Live to Tell. How do you solve Madonna's sadness? By exploring it inside her soul!!
Loveeeee it !!!!
"I know where beauty lives. I've seen it once; I know the warmth she gives."
I have always loved this song so much...especially the "If I ran away" (etc) interlude. such a classic
