As an 8-9 year old in Phoenix in 1975, I remember when those same model garbage trucks used to work the alleys picking up trash. As I am a Native American (Navajo/Meskwaki ancestry), I dread to know what Soylent Red is made of.

Don't forget the late, great Edward G. Robinson (1893-1973). In 1973, he was given his Honorary Academy Award at the hospital (on his deathbed) by the President of the Academy (Charlton Heston). The document accompanying the award reads, in part: "Edward G. Robinson, who achieved greatness as a player, a patron of the arts, and a dedicated citizen ... in sum, a Renaissance man. From his friends in the industry he loves." Sadly, he died 2 months before the actual awards ceremony, though the results had already been voted upon long before. This movie was SO outdated! It portrayed a world that since 1973, everything has gone downhill for the past 50 years. Charlton Heston’s character is in his 40’s (totally middle-age in 1973) and had never eaten real food in his life before that simple meal of pilfered beef, lettuce, onions, and apples recently purchased for the wealthy man he was investigating. And the wealthy man’s apartment had beaded curtains, popcorn ceilings, shag area carpets, and frosted shower doors, which were very common with new middle-class homes purchased at the time.

@erik bengt no u dont actually. Highest life quality seemed to exist in the 80s 90s and 2000s for the average person. For me this was the zenith of western Civilization and maybe even the zenith of humanity in general. However i still believe there is hope. If overpopulation ever becomes a problem you will probably see some form of racism from governments around the world in order to divide people and have them kill each other. It only seems logical to me that the solution to overpopulation is war. When people on earth surpass the max amount the earth can support then survival of the fittest will be the only rule

Happy New Year 2022! I first saw this on TV as a Friday night movie in 1975 and we've caught up to 2022. As an 8-9 year old in Phoenix in 1975, I remember when those same model garbage trucks used to work the alleys picking up trash. As I am a Native American (Navajo/Meskwaki ancestry), I dread to know what Soylent Red is made of.

Charlton Heston's the man.
What a Hollywood legend!
It's wild because Soylent Green is people isn't even the twist that sticks with me now. To me, the real twist, is what 'going home' means. I had meant to watch this movie for years and years and finally did so 3 or 4 years back and when you see Heston's friend 'go home' it struck me as incredibly sad and as profoundly 'true.' We will undoubtedly live to see this become the best possible outcome for many people and it's such a sad state of affairs.
What does going home mean?
@Bridge Escaping from the damning hell of existence by being surrounded by beautiful imagery and classical music, your death scheduled for exactly 20 minutes after it begins.
I was at school when this came out. In Geography we were taught that the World resources were running out. For example oil & gas, we were told, would be depleted by the year 2000! So i wondered at the time, is this film be far off the mark?
Hollywood got the date wrong, maybe 2222?? My geography teacher certainly was!
this movie was most likely preprogramming.
Every era has it's scare: overpopulation, "peak oil" (it's going to "run out"), the next ice age, acid rain, the ozone layer is going away, global warming, climate change. Notice how everyone was "so sure about the 'settled science' on all of this"! Yeah, and none of it happened. Most of it is a way to sell books and movies and to control and tax you more.
We gotta stop them, SOME HOW!
We have a chance!!!
