"Valve's new official video for the Steam Deck has a very interesting game icon in it," industry insider Nibel tweeted yesterday, before following up with: "Update: Valve has removed the original video and reuploaded a new one with a small difference."
ICYMI, all three versions of the device - the £349 64GB model, the £459 256GB model, and the £569 512GB model - are available to purchase immediately in the UK without a reservation and with an estimated delivery time of 1-2 weeks. However, given that allocations have been per territory in the past, availability may differ from region to region.
Alongside the reservations news, Valve also announced that its long-awaited official Steam Deck dock is also now available for purchase, with a price tag of £79.99/$89.99 USD.
For those unfamiliar, Steam Deck's Docking Station, is, much like the dock for Nintendo's Switch, a wired cradle that can be either used as a neater way to charge the device or as a means to connect it to a television for big-screen play.
    Dock Review via Phoronix:
Last week Valve launched their much anticipated Steam Deck Docking Station as the official "dock" for the Steam Deck to allow connecting up to two external displays, power, additional USB ports, and Gigabit Ethernet. I've been testing out the Steam Deck Docking Station and it's been working out well but on the pricier side compared to alternatives.
The Steam Deck Docking Station "Steam Deck Dock" designed by Valve is a USB-C connected dock for their Arch Linux powered handheld gaming console. The dock was designed exclusively with the Steam Deck in mind and thus serves as a nice-sized stand too with molded rubber seat and sufficiently sized USB-C cable.
The Steam Deck Docking Station features three USB-A 3.1 Gen1 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and can interface with two displays via DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0. The Steam Deck Docking Station is compatible with FreeSync / Adaptive-Sync and can support up to 4K@60 or 1440p@120 as well as being able to leverage DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST).
This basically amounts to being a nice USB-C hub for the Steam Deck albeit comes at a hefty price: $89 USD. Meanwhile I've been using an Anker USB-C hub with the Steam Deck and from there a USB Ethernet adapter. The Anker USB-C hub is about $30 USD. Meanwhile there are alternatives like the JSAUX Docking Station for the Steam Deck that retail for $38+. So for about half the price of the official Steam Deck Docking Station, the JSAUX product available from Amazon.com (affiliate link) and other retailers goes for half the cost. The JSAUX Docking Station supports USB-C power delivery, one HDMI 2.0 output, two USB-A ports, and Gigabit Ethernet.

I have the official dock and I love it, but with all this Valve gear makes it feel like something is missing. We have the Deck with the touchpads and the paddle buttons, we have the dock, now it feels like we need a new controller. I would love a "Steam Controller 2.0" to be able to have parity between the Deck when docked and undocked, especially if you're configuring PC games and you have virtual menus with the touchpads in handheld mode that you cant have in docked mode. The closest thing we have now is the PS5 controller but it still falls short in comparison.

I bought a PS5 controller ready for my Deck dock, which should come hopefully early next week. I know it'll feel like there's something missing compared to the Steam Deck's controls. But like you said, it's probably the best we have at the moment and for the foreseeable future.
For the paddles, the Xbox Elite Controller seems to be a good alternative but apparently there's driver issues on Deck. (And I personally didn't enjoy using the controller much.)

One thing you forgot to mention about the official dock is that it will receive firmware upgrades to fix potential bugs or to add new features (dual monitor output - great for desktop mode - and Freesync compatibility). Valve being the manufacturer of both the Steam Deck and the dock should guarantee that they will implement fixes and new features faster and better than the other docks. So official dock + perfect fit for the Steam Deck + extra charger + long time support might be worth the extra price.
By the way, thanks for your videos!

The dock's useless, as it doesn't fit the steam deck "at all" - when you have it inside a protective case

    • @devotee
      @devotee 2 года назад +3

@@txtworld I've seen a couple of the dock reviews and the Steam Deck could fit with a protective case, so it depends on the case you're using. There was also a problem with the USB-C connector not fitting correctly if the case made the back of the Steam Deck too thick. Case are 3rd party accessories so I can see why Valve "overlooked" that detail. Or maybe they're going to sell their own protective case that will perfectly fit their dock, who knows?
Two things I don't like about the official dock are that it feels a bit cheap for the price ($89/99€), even the connectors on the back aren't labeled at all, like if the final product was rushed out and that the power adapter is not the same as the one included with the Steam Deck (power brick + USB-C cable), the cable is attached to the power brick. I'd rather have it separately in case the cable breaks (you just replace it with another standard USB-C cable). I don't know why they would do that since it seems more intuitive (and cheaper!) to build the power brick with a USB-A port and include a USB-A to USB-C cable (you can also replace it with a longer/shorter one depending on your needs).
On the other side, JSAUX Docks can also receive firmware updates but, as I mentioned in my first comment, Valve has the advantage of knowing (and controlling) all the insides and outs of both the Steam Deck (hardware and OS) and the dock, so I'd imagine it's easier for them to track and fix bugs, and also to implement new features before the competition.

What's funny is that I ordered the Steam Deck about 15 months ago... and got it less than a week ago. I was hesitant at first as I expect Steam Deck version 2 to come "sooner rather than later", but as I tried the device, I don't really care right now that Steam Deck 2 will most likely be much better with RDNA3 etc. Why is that? I think Steam Deck 1 is just great as it is, and I want to support Valve in their effort to bring us the ultimate Linux gaming console.
I think I will eventually buy the Steam Deck v2 as well. My dream specs with Steam Deck 2 would be a bigger 120hz-capable, no-bezel screen fitting the current bezel area on Steam Deck v1, and even more effective / low power AMD custom APU with RDNA3 / 5nm process. Just keep the form factor & compatibility with current accessories intact.

So the updates that addressed all the scaling issues in dock mode has been AMAZING. I had a long running issue with trying to dock my deck , I would have to first go to desktop mode, open up steam and set it into big picture mode before docking (because in desktop mode I can set the resolution to 1920x1080 in the settings and it remember those settings when docked to the tv). But now with the update it is very much a "Switch" like experience. Now I just turn my steam deck on and plug it into my 3rd party cheapie dock and it worked flawlessly. Another great thing about it working like that now is when I am docked and I want to play AAA game like SpiderMan or God of War at 4k 60+FPS I can easily switch to Stream mode and Stream the game from my Desktop PC and it works great (there was some network buffering issues a while ago because my desktop and deck was both streaming wirelessly it was doable but every once in a while you'll get some pixelation, but now I have both my dock and my PC wired in and has not been a issue since). I know some people would argue I could just plug my PC straight into my living room computer... but I have no intention of hauling my PC up and down the stairs every time I want to couch play some story driven games. (With some fine tuning like enabling "Wake on LAN" where I can turn my PC off and on through just the steam deck it has been a really great experience)

I've been thinking about going back to using Arch for work (been using macs for last few years...so boring)......desktop mode has been so good, better then I ever expected and so far has been good enough to run as a workstation (with dock of course). Will likely continue using it as workstation. Some things still need to be worked out, like the screen locking situation. Sure you can just use a 3rd party or put your deck to sleep, but seems like could use some polish. Not the end of the world. But have always loved pacman package manager, feels like home. KDE has def come a long way over the years. So far all the normal work stuff , well works great. , IE: openvpn, ide, browsers (brave) etc etc. I hope more people use desktop mode so it gets better and better. Also what a great way to get people into linux. Makes this old penguin happy.

I actually think that $90 is a competitive price for the Steam Deck dock, given its feature set. It has DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 (the Steam Deck isn't really capable of powering a display at a level that would require HDMI 2.1, so 2.0 is the sweet spot iom), Gigabit ethernet, and it has a whopping three USB 3.1 ports. That's a premium, well thought out set of ports
The closest USB-C hub I've found with those specs is Anker's 553, and it costs the exact same as Valve's dock while having slightly worse specs. There are cheaper docks if you can't justify a $90 dock, but if you can afford it you'll get your money's worth on the feature set and quality alone. And of course, Valve is incentivized to put out firmware updates for its dock in lock-step with updates to the Steam Deck, which is great for people who want to use the dock with the Steam Deck
After doing my research on the USB-C hub market, I've realized that Valve's dock is a sneakily good deal even for people who don't own a Steam Deck. I have an M1 MacBook Air, and I could probably slot it into Valve's dock to use the computer in "clamshell mode". Indeed, a great work + play setup would be to have a 1080p or 1440p monitor with a high refresh rate, an ethernet cable, a quality mouse and a mechanical keyboard (either wired or using a wireless dongle), and a partitioned external hard drive all connected to the dock. Slot in the Steam Deck for gaming and casual desktop use, slot in a laptop for work

All of my main screen icons were burned into tthe screen permanently. And for a portable PC console, given that it's easy to forget to turn off, or just leave to go do something while a game is running, not to mention the use of it as a desktop, I'm thinking it was the right choice not to go with one. If they have a sku without the charger, I don't expect it to be 40-50 bucks like you suggested. I'd expect it to be at least 60. A lot of generic docks may be around 40-60 bucks, but not all have a LAN port. (Plus it being able to hold the Deck upright)
Anker is a brand that I trust for USB related stuff. The cheapest dock they have that has a LAN port is 60 bucks. (They actually have 2 form factor options, depending on if you want a card slots or not. (No card slots would give you a USB-C port instead. Along with the 2 USB-A ports shared on both versions)
So for what it has, I'd expect a charger-less sku to be at least $60. But probably more like $70. I doubt losing the charger would drop the price more than 20 bucks.

Valve really needs to release a steam deck controller. Basically, chop the left and right sides of the steam deck off and then join them together. This would be amazing as the steam deck is super comfortable and bloated with inputs. Combined with the new steam input system, it would revolutionize non-steamdeck pc gaming.

Most of my games, including some unsupported, play on my Steam Deck with Steam OS. Hence, I have no desire to install Windows 11 on my Deck. So, I abandoned playing Bungie's Destiny 2. Their loss, not mine, because there is whole load of DLC content I will never buy! The official Steam Deck Dock works great. I love that when you first plug it in you get a software update with a dock graphic on screen. Valve's attention to detail is excellent! I was going to buy an OLED Switch until I got my Deck, but now see little point, as the OLED version offers no real gaming performance gain over my original Switch, plus my original Switch is one of earlier versions that supports home brew, etc!

But now I am extremely cautious. Of all the things I use, only the usb c hub is 3rd world party. I believe the usb c hub is extremely important. I mean it allows several usb devices to connect using one port AND it supplies decent amount of power to the Deck. That being said, I don’t see anything wrong with spending serious money on a hub. So I bought this.

I just got mine setup today... only I can't get it to actually work. I assume this is because I'm using the Level1Techs DisplayPort 1.4 KVM switch, which I also just setup today. My Windows PC works fine with it, but when I switch over to PC 2 where the Steam Deck dock is connected, I just get a black screen. I have seen talk that the Dock will get firmware updates to support dual monitors and FreeSync, and since I have a dual monitor KVM (despite only having one monitor - I just wanted the expandability if I ever need it), maybe it will be fixed at some point.
Either way, I don't have a spare desk to set it up on besides my main one, and I really can't be arsed to swap my keyboard / mouse / monitor aroudn every time I want to use the Steam Deck dock, so I'm pretty bummed out this didn't work.
