The omission could mean city states are gone in Civ VII, which would only be a good thing since they were always an overly gamified concept, and Civilization is at its best when it skews more towards historical simulation and less towards immersion-breaking board game mechanics. To me this is the magnum opus of the Civ franchise. It was unpolished when it launched but they fixed everything with Brave new world and to this day, it’s the peak Civ experience.
One unit per tile - such a fundamental innovation, Civ 5 pushed the series forward so much and remains the best looking game in the franchise, they nailed the art style, wish 7 would be like this…

Just recently I got my first ever space race victory in civ 3, which is becoming my favorite one in the entire franchise. Civ 4... I dislike the music, the early 3D graphics, the "nation maintenance", the religion, the fact that you're basically forced to use slavery or else you'll fall behind, instead of nicely calculating when it's the best time to bring your city down a point or two when you spawn a settler. The health system, the changed happiness system. The tech tree feels too big and all the individual techs seem to have such little impact. Most of the wonders suck. Sorry, to be such a nagger and I'm sorry I'm bashing on a game that you probably liek very much. For me it's just one of those times when it's really frustrating because you dislike a game that everybody around says is the best one (or at least that it's really good)
arguably the best one. people might hate because it simplified mechanics and became more "casual". But sometimes simplicity is more fun. I keep coming back to Civ V not because of the mechanics, but because it's a game that generates new worlds for me to explore. Even the sequel Civ VI isn't as good. As you will spend way too much time in VI micro-managing your civ each turn. and exploration just wouldn't be as much fun. In Civ V exploration is a lot of fun. I hope VII is basically a sequel to V and not VI.
Unique units that are tied to an era for each civ would be fantastic. So each civ doesn’t have just 1 unit to look forward to💯 Like America could have Minute Men first(industrial era), then Sherman Tank/B17 Flying Fortress/Marines (modern era), then USS Nimitz Aircraft Carrier or SR-71 Black Bird(atomic era) and M1 Abram Tank and/or F-22 Raptor (information era).

This game has an enchanting beauty. It's magnificent. It's all very beautiful and well done. I didn't like turn-based games, but I gave CIV V a try because of the aesthetics. Result: game to this day. Now Civilization VI I'm sorry, but it's unpalatable in many ways. If VII has the beauty of V, I will play it without a doubt.
The legendary Gods and Kings theme! My first mod ever was to change the title music back to it once Brave New World had been released - though Brave New Worlds theme was quite pleasant too.
I'd really have liked it if Civ V (and Beyond Earth for that matter) would cycle through their menu themes if you 'owned' more than one. They're all great themes, but their combined variety would be appreciated with how long we typically spend on Civ games!
I love how every one of these videos has a bunch of people calling it the best civ. I’ve played every civ and each one is an improvement on the last, that’s why I’m always looking forward to the next one. I can’t wait for civ vii, I’m sure it’ll be the best civ yet.
I really hope all of these retrospectives are building up to a new Civilization Chronicles pack or something. I would love to see Civ 1, Civ 2, and Test of Time come to Steam, and a Retro-Civilization bundle like the old Chronicles set would be even better.
1500 hours in Civ V. This game has such a clear UI in comparison to Civ VI that I cannot stand to play Civ VI without immense frustration. Everything important is signified by digits so hilariously small or hidden that I feel like smashing my PC to pieces. Please Firaxis, learn from Civ V and my money is yours!
I first didn’t like how you couldn’t stack units, but it slowly grew in me… however I will never forgive its lack of wonder animations! Civ VI brought back some animation so it scratched that itch.
I still don't like how you can't stack units. I understand they want to introduce a system similar to classic hex-style turn based war sim games of the past but clearly that didn't work quite well as it's clunky on a Civ5 map and everyone just started building ranged units with so little room for maneuvering. If that's what is called realistic I don't know what to say.
You’ve done a lot of errors in this title but several of them were easily fixable in the data files, such as city names and architecture. I couldn’t do anything about Gustavus Adolphus having another king’s beard or him talking 2012 Swedish. I couldn’t find a way to fix the bugged war music either. Either way, I still love this game for what it is and my most played title on Steam!

A lot of bizarre takes in these comments. Civ V punished players for wanting to settle cities to the point that having 4 cities + tradition opener is widely seen as the only viable meta for deity level play. Civ VI improved upon V in most every aspect except for the late game + the World Congress.
You absolutely have a point about the World Congress. VI's world congress is an abomination, they probably wanted to prevent you from abising it like you could in V.
I wonder if this is a case of the grass seeming greener on the other side? With Civ VI being the latest game for many years by now, most of us are VERY familiar by now with its strengths and flaws alike. Civ V, having fallen out of some players' memory, may be seeing a resurgence partly out of nostalgia and newfound appreciation of its own strengths (while its own flaws remain forgotten at least for the time being). All theoretical mind you, I can't say for absolute sure.
@@finaldusk1821 when civ 6 first released, civ 5 was still way better. Now, civ 6 is way better, especially if you get the texture mod that makes the world map look like civ 5. I hope they did indeed go for a realistic look for civ 7 again. It was clearly more appreciated. It fits the idea of it being historical better.

The last good Civ game. Sorry but VI was an utter disappointment, filled with too many systems that put breadth above depth. Diplomacy and world congress could basically be ignored most of the time and religions also stopped mattering. The governors being the same multi-ethnic group no matter what civ you played was also lazy and bizarre. It's a pretty game for just making cities and districts but it's not the empire-builder it used to be.
I don´t get the amount of hate Civ 6 gets. It´s a perfectly fine game, still having loads of fun with it. I did like civ 5 graphics better though, but I really enjoy the mechanics in civ 6.
Graphics are one thing to hold against Civ VI, but microtransactions? What about Civ VI can be called a microtransaction that doesn't also apply to Civ V? Both games use EXACTLY the same DLC format: A few giant packs and several tiny ones, all overpriced whenever they're not on-sale.
@finaldusk1821 I got Civ 5 late in 2014 all in one purchase so I didn't get the full effect of the microtransactions like I did with civ 6. But you're right, both games have that problem.

The art deco style is pretty dated and the world map is just grim and bleak. I prefer Civ IV and VI much more than V.

It was the game that introduced me to the series! I was very curious about strategy with hexagonal tiles.
It had a lot of classical music bangers. It added so much to conquering other civs.
