Great performance by Will Lee. Heard it was done with one or no run throughs. Everyone playing live. Very complex and so many charts. Even in the original studio version they layered. But this was live by musicians who just were reading cold. Amazing. On live tv - no less!
Why is this song so good?! I was introduced to the Andy Williams version from a burnt CD a friend made for me. My Jazz Band background led me to the Maynard Ferguson version, then the Harris original, realizing it's the same as the Donna Summer disco rendition I heard in dad's Maonte Carlo as a kid, to here. Its so peculiar, yet perfect. Why? Lyrics are odd, but the chord progression exquisite. What is it? It has everything!
Will Lee, Jimmy Webb, Paul Schafer. Lee played for years as NYC Super Ssssion player, playing with the Brecker Brothers and others on many many recordings. There have been a bunch of rousing renditions, and tis is one for sure. I may be confused but I think Teddy Tedusko was involved? Just a triumphant performance.
You are thinking of Tommy Tedesco, famed guitarist member of the legendary Wrecking Crew in LA in the 60s and 70s who played on numerous hit records for a bunch of artists.
Thats called music

With a range like his (that last note!) Will should have done more vocal work in one way or another.

Cool...not as good as the original, but still a nice cover.
