Here we take a look at the classic kid's TV Show, Pingu. And though looking harmless on the surface, there was a surprisingly large amount of censoring that got put on this show, from having scenes edited out, to completely banning entire episodes.

@@Mr.Nobody653 I can tell
Hi Steve 👋
There's an episode of sesame Street that got banned. It was when the wicked witch of the West came to sesame Street. And Grover the grouch ended up getting a crush on her. Please review it
Fun Fact: The Walrus was originally going to make roaring sounds, but it ended up scaring kids in the test screening, so they changed it to the human giggles. And knowing what Walrus sound like, I don’t blame them one bit
I bet it would sound like the giant walrus from Sinbad & the Eye of the Tiger.
@@mikekomarinski Probably scarier, if they use real walrus sounds
@@seandewar47 Yeah, Walruses do make those loud & aggressive bellowing noises that sounds like a cross between a buffalo & rhino.
Yeah the original Walrus audio sounds like a hell spawn demon from an anime let alone for a kids show.
@@MauriceBear you talking about the pingu walrus audio or normal walrus sounds in General? If it’s the former, can you link it? I'm insanely curious what the Pingu Walrus sounded like
The reason Pingu being a demon child works here, is because he ACTUALLY gets punished.
Unlike Caillou who has spineless parents
You try grounding a kid who won't live to 10 because of the leukemia
@@insanityplatybelodon5748 it was never confirmed he has cancer
@@insanityplatybelodon5748 he doesn't have hair because it's a design choice that makes him more marketable and easier to animate
Of course, that's the reason why I like this better.
As a small kid I honestly couldn't stand Arthur or Caillou-like shows that tried to be educational or had characters questioning everything (usually wasting time in stuff I already knew or didn't care about). I had my teachers and my parents explaining me how the world works and moral lessons.
Disney shorts, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry and Pingu were pure escapism and I loved them for just showing me windows to these animated realities where characters do things nobody can in real life.
“French accented penguinese” is a gem of a line
This is a show targeted for incredibly young children, and yet I laughed my arse off seeing that subtitle as an adult.
But what about, hear me out, Penguinese-accented French?
@@killdozer7792 we need it lol
@@killdozer7792mind blown
Still confused how weird ice things made kids cry
I can confirm that pingu running away genuinely distressed me as a kid. The sense of dread was nuts…but a nice relief when he’s picked up by his parents!
Honestly same, I remember after that I feared running away- as if I would in the first place! Haha
i think that the screen where pingu runs away fell me bad for him
I don’t know if I was just an mental kid when I was younger but I remember not being afraid when watching that episode
There exists a Pingu Korean dub, where the characters actually speak English. Apparently they were used to teach children to learn English (but this was done very poorly). That being said, they spawn many crazy out of context moments that are so bizarre that it's actually hilarious.
ruclips.net/video/skcq0W1_J9U/видео.html this?
By any chance do you know where I could get my hands on this version
Oh god I just found a compilation of clips from thing and now I feel weirdly threatened for some reason. Maybe because that dub’s English is far superior to mine
Sounds like a must-watch.
I think those Koreans weren't expecting such a huge North American demand for their dub version.
You're right, the letter the old penguin gets at 1:25 would've been a letter informing him of someone's death. Traditionally, paper with a black border, as seen here, was used for this purpose.
Yeah Looks like an oldtimey "Todesanzeige" you get from a friend or relative when somebody you knew has died. Nowadays they don't look much different but usually have some calming Background (e.g. a Sunset)
good eye
In the audiobook that was made of the show it said that the old penguin whose name was Mr Pengagrass that the letter was informing him that his great great great grandpapa had died and he had inherited an iceberg in his will
@@williampulfer-melville8536 An audiobook of Pingu? Seems like an odd choice for a show that was very visual in it's storytelling. I'd be interested to hear that, would love to know how well it works in audio form.
In Poland it’s common to see these letters on doors and gates of houses where someone died. It contains informations about deceased, who is grieving (loving husband, children etc.) and date of funeral.
The walrus was used as it was also used in one of the creator’s earlier shows. So they decided to use it again. That’s why it looks different to other characters.
I want to know the name of that "earlier show"

@@Da_Trololz loll the walrus actually looks more goofy than creepy their, i guess the lighting or something with the walrus made it look creepy in pingu
@@mokaosordorica7363 As a little kid I remember being utterly terrified by the walrus, and the same goes for many of my classmates that have seen the show.
@@mokaosordorica7363 I think it's just that it's out of place and so insanely huge compared to Pingu
I had no idea that Pingu
1) was as new as that, being created in 1990 - I must've been watching the very first airings in my country.
2) was popular in so many countries! I recently even discovered a Pingu Game Boy game (JPN only), which is actually super faithful to the look of the series.
I think they aired it first integrated in the puppet series "Hallo Spencer"
In an official Pingu storybook - ones that essentially retold episodes of the show with illustrations, released around the same time the show aired - it's clarified that the walrus's ultimate intent was to eat Pingu, not just eat his bed.
YEAH, traumatize kids, YEAH!
What the fuck did I just read??? First the Korean dub, now this? 🥺
@@rompevuevitos222 I watched this as a baby. This didn't traumatize me.
So eat the main character basically.
@@iwiffitthitotonacc4673 ok
The walrus was created for some sort of showreel where he spoke a full sentence, thus explaining the incredibly odd design choice of having human teeth.
He spoke German I think
Not gonna lie... It looks a bit like Dr. Phil.
It's still better than the one from a specific movie about another walrus with human teeth...
If you know you know
@Khaled Shanshal What's the show reel called?
@Khaled Shanshal Thanks.
10:14 I can't stop watching Pingu with that troll face. Well played, Steven
I've been giggling for the past 2 minutes 😭
As a kid, I had the DVD version of the original pingu, which I still own today. Some of these banned episodes are still on it!
Apparently, there was an audiobook version of Pingu delivers the mail, where it specifically says that one of the sad penguin’s relatives have died. Also, the black rim around the letter used to be an indication that said relative died at war or abroad. So yeah, some interesting Pingu lore right there.
The idea that there's a great war happening possibly between the penguins from the the Antarctic and the walruses from the artic
Penguins with thermonuclear warheads is scary
@Toga is a good kitty please love him penguin nazis
If I'm not mistaken there's ciggarete ads from Japan that penguins participate in Vietnam War

It's not a walrus, it's a sea lion, the natural predators of penguins, hence why it's terrifying to Pingu.
It's described as a Walrus officially though, and it doesn't have the ear flaps that Sea Lions have.
@@MadAliceInWonderland It also has human teeth instead of animalistic ones, meaning some liberties were taken with the design. However if it was a walrus then it would have tusks as male walrus do, same for it's eyes being so close together like that of a sea lion.
So, it's a sea lion.
Yeah its really weird cause It takes the features of a walrus, and sea lions don't typically eat penguins. But then again Walrus don't live in Antarctica while penguins do.
I feel the whole thing just has a few plot holes
the giant mostach does remind people of walruses.
@@sickasman7598 perhaps it's scary because it doesn't make sense.
I love Pingu and how natural and somehow real his behaviour can be, just like any person.
He have a lot of personallity and this is why he is so iconic.
I also love the U.S. version of the theme song !!! Is very unique and very very catchy !!!! 😊
fun fact: pingu's girlfriend is called Pingi, his Seal best friend is called Robbie (in german a seal is called Robbe), and I think his mum's name is Pingilla. I know that because we had audio tapes with sort of like audiobooks by pingu, and because penguinish isn't very understandable in audio only, they actually spoke. I had most of the video and audio tapes as a kid.
There's also a lost pingu audio tape where Robbie tries to teach his little brother and Pingu how to swim, and I think Robbie dies ( might also be his bro). I never had that tape though, it might also be an urban legend 😅 yeah, we swiss were pretty dark, I sometimes still have nightmares of that friggin walrus
The letter the old penguin gets at 1:27 is a "Condolence Card". It's an invitation to the funeral or a general information that someone deceased. It's a tradition in (Edit: )large parts of Europe 😅.
You can identify the card by the black borders. Also they are usually in an envelope.
Makes sense as part of Switzerland speaks German
Precisely, this is a Totenanzeige. Usually printed in newspapers. Given that he received that in a letter it is either a (1) newspaper article a friend has send him informing him that someone he knew died or (2) a family member or close friend died.
I find it good that they show this. It is part of the sad reality of a postman that he has to deliver sad news.
@@keineangabe1804 When my mother died a year ago, I had 50 cards printed and sent to all family and friends.
It was published in the newspaper additionally, for the local contacts and business partners.
@@M0butu my condolences. In my area it's custom to not just send such a card but also an invention to the funeral. However I am gladly not too familiar with the inner workings of such things and can not differentiate the common notice from the invention.
But as I wanted to point out, this card means someone close recently died or he was informed that someone he was once close had died in the past. Either way not a good mail but I guess part of the job as a postman.
Also in Belgium, I assume possibly some other countries as well
Knowing that walruses eat penguins leads me to think this was the show's version of stranger danger or something along those lines, but given Pingu's style It just turned into nightmare Fuel.
@Gi Gi that's what I was about to say so it is possible that the penguins have heard of walruses but they've never seen them and knowing that you get seals in both the South and the North and seeing as walruses do eat seals it's likely that Robby told Pingu about walruses
@Gi Gi To be fair, there are four species of seal in Antarctica - Crabeater, Leopard, Ross's and Weddell's. Only the Leopard seal eats penguins, so there's a 3/4 chance Robby the Seal is one of the "safe" species.
@Gi Gi well it is only leopard seals that prey on penguins and I'm pretty sure Robby isn't a leopard seal
3:21 when he ate the food and walked away I lost it lmao 😆
I live in Canada, and the walrus episode aired there a few times. As a child (likely 6 or around there) the walrus made me screech, hide in a utility closet and sob for hours until my mom talked me out of it. I can't possibly express how deeply and genuinely horrifying it was.
Things that make the walrus terrifying:
The walrus was stalking pingu before beginning to torture him.
The walrus is highly detailed and not simplistic, unlike other side characters.
The walrus behaves in a sociopathic manner, wanting to do nothing except seeing pingu suffer, whilst laughing away.
Edit: there was also an inaccuracy, The walrus was chewing the mattress, walruses do not chew their food
Like a real seal towards penguins, they are merciless in the artic

My mother in law recently gave a book version of the episode where Pingu helps deliver the mail to us for my son. The page where the penguin is crying says "But at the next igloo, they delivered a sad letter to a frail, old penguin, whose cousin had died."
Apparently that's a creation of the episode, too, and not just written for the book. It's a condolence card, recognizable by the black border and the fact they're usually delivered in letters or envelopes.
Yikes.
There's also the cross on the letter that's an indication but it moves by so fast it's easy to miss.

I loved Pingu as a kid, because it was not only funny, adventurous and colourful, but because the main character was a flawed social outcast, which made him relatable. As an autistic, I loved and related to Pingu's character a lot and it was also because of the universal comprehension of the show. So in a sense Pingu can be considered an accidental representation on autism. #actuallyautistic
To those who think that flawed characters like Pingu are always horrid kids, he also has a generous and well-meaning side (such as when he helps a poor old penguin in ep. Pingu and the Barrel Organ). To think that Pingu is always a horrid kid and irredeemable, is a very black and white way to put it.
Also, as a kid, I happened to see most of the banned episodes, because Finland and Switzerland don't have strict censorships. These episodes were shown on TV and released on local VHS/DVD.
I too favour the original version of the show over the re-dubbed version.
I remember loving this show a lot as a toddler, despite being aired so little. Going into its banned episodes, I heard only about that infamous walrus episode, which I don’t know if I watched as a little kid (God, I hope not…), but I didn’t knew about the other ones. I guess because the rest of them were a little bit more like nitpicking than actual affect on the audiences, which resulted in the walrus episode getting all the attention.
I watched the walrus one
When I was little, I watched the walrus episode but it was terrifying to me. (I was somewhere between two and four years old) I got so scared that I somehow blocked it out after some scary dreams. A year later pingu was on again and I got terrified once again, had bad dreams, and managed to block it out again. A few years after that my mother told me k wasn’t allowed to see that episode because it scared me. I saw it again about five to ten years ago and understood the story of me blocking it out and also kind of remembered it but it’s so weird how my two to five year old brain blocked it out
My condolences, guys. Maybe this episode was the reason the show aired so little in my country as well. After all, it was the season 1 finale, so who could expect season 2 after so many people avoiding looking at this specific moment?
dunno if this was just me but I loved the walrus episode
Trivia: The redubbing of the show wasn't exclusive to the US version, it was done worldwide in 2002 which can be found out by looking at the copyright symbol on the updated outro screen
i remember watching a VHS copy in the UK with the updated audio
And there we go
Same here in my country the us ver aired
I'm from the UK and I also remember both intros, I'd just presumed they had different ones for different series
So it is due to copyright and licensing issues?
Steve Reviews, that US intro is actually the later edit of season 1. The intro is from Season's 2-4, which used the show's models and a snip-it of "The Pingu Dance" track from later edits of Pingu Looks After the Egg.

I remember that my grandmother hated Pingu. She found the penguin's voices and pinguinese annoying. But I actually really enjoyed it.

My grandma hated it and so do I.

The bed walking(?) in the walrus episode actually creeped me out more than the actual Walrus. Like sure he looked creepy but the idea that my bed could take me somewhere I’m unfamiliar while I’m sleeping lowkey gave me a existential crisis as a kid.
The way the bed moved also just gave me the creeps, it moved too fluidly and animal like for a inanimate object.
SAME.
Well i think we have a common thing aka anthropomorphism scares us both!
Well I remember like it was yesterday (even tho I’m 13) but that part in the episode was supposed to be a dream turned into a nightmare

@@Froggy.k1tty I didn’t remember the walrus until this video
Weirdly enough, I recall seeing some of these episodes in Finland too. Mainly the bleeding part (which did scare me a bit.) I have no recollection of that walrus though (THANK GOD for that!)
This also reminds me of some of the banned Moomins episode... one has Little My masked as a monster, one has Oni threatening everyone (that one makes sense), one had a pirate captain taking a hostage etc... but the scenes where Little My is flown away on a kite and captured (rescued) by a black panther is fine... or when she gets turned to ice by Ice Queen... or the Moomins having ghost feet standing on them and almoust being dropped in lava... yeah, not everything checks out in here.
Oh well. Childhood restored and ruined at the same time. I think that does it for today.
2:23 Pingu’s Noot Noot sounded funny in the original.
And the u.s one, he did the noot noot 2 times even though he looked like he did it 3 times.
I think as the Walrus only appears in Pingu's dream, it looks like that because
1. We see the walrus as Pingu sees it: Terrifying
2. It's a nightmare, where often terrifying things get exaggerated

I actually have this episode in my head for so long, and it is the first thing that comes up when someone talks about pingu: the censored episode in which he was sick was one that he had put the thermometer in his coffee.
We had VHS tapes of Pingu that my mom bought in Korea, and we had all the banned ones too. These weren't altered like the US versions so we got the original theme and not the weird one by David Hasselhoff (Yes, the full version has him rapping. It's hilarious).
The Walrus in "Pingu's dream" terrified the hell out of me as a little kid. Also the freaky ice sculptures when he runs away scared me as well.
“Yo my name is pingu come on dance to the beat”
Yeah we had VHS tabes containing both the U.S. and the original version. Different tabes of course.

@@3X3LR8 You know what? You're right. I gotta respect the Hasselhoff.
I'mma play devils advocate for a quick moment. The part where Pingu's eyes start swirling around probably gave off the impression of him being slightly tipsy 11:01. Course it was probably meant to show that the drink was either good or slightly stingy if its meant to be soda.
This episode would be completely normal in scotland
In Switzerland at that time, we had syrups with different flavors, which would be mixed with water. Everyone in Switzerland would have understood that these are non alcoholic sugary kids drinks.
I love the eye swirling XD
To be fair, Pingu swirled his eyes quite often.
I think it was just to show he either got brain freeze or his stomach hurt from drinking it so fast
found your channel about half hour ago and I can’t get enough 😂 taking me back to the good old days
one disturbing thing about the walrus that no one ever talks about is how it seems to have the ability to phase through objects
An thing that makes the walrus creppier is that they prey on penguins( and they do other NSFW with them) so for Pingu an walrus really is his worst nightmare
Walrus are in the arctic, not the Antarctic. I’m pretty sure you’re thinking of elephant seals or leopard seals.
It isn't even a walrus, is it? I see no tusks.
So a theory about the audio dubbing in the US:
To my knowledge, when a company purchased the rights to broadcast a show, they had the option to purchase it in parts. Visuals, audio, music, etc. When a company didn't have a lot of money or confidence in a product, they'd opt to forego audio and redub it in-house. So technically yeah, it was a licensing thing, but just in the idea that the studio dubbing it probably didn't have a lot of faith in it.
boh lol is weirdo
2:47: When I saw this intro for the first time, I thought it was like some sort of a reboot, or a rebrand on the show. At least, based on the episodes I had seen. But, you helped me to find out what was really going on.

The transition from the walrus' mouth to the "O" in Geologie is top notch
I remember back then, don't remember what year exactly.. But I was sick, I couldn't sleep, I knew I wasn't going to school, and i remember Cartoon Network had this children's programming that came on late like 3 or 4 in the morning called, Big Bag and a program after it called, Small World. And a part of Small World, was Pingu. I remember hearing the US version theme, I vaguely remember any of the episodes, but I recently, did research, looked it up and found out it was called Pingu. They actually have episodes on Prime. It has got to be at least 20 years since I heard that theme. Watching it and hearing that weird theme song after all this time took me so far back, I nearly cried. This being such a small fragment of my childhood, made me miss it that much.
But Sheesh, never knew there was another version of the show.

I remember having cassettes of Pingu and those had a Swiss German narrator. The drinks in the episode with the toilet were actually icetea, which is why the two penguins had to pee so often :)
Pingu was a deplorable pervert who was into "watersports".
This is a well known fact in "the industry".
I loved the cassettes and VHS of pingu. EVERY Sunday morning (at my grandma's house) I watched it. I think I should visit my grandfather and search for the cassettes and stuff! Du hesch mini Nostalgie gweckt, Danke vill mal:)
i thought it was obviously, I don't understand americans
I like to think that all the censorship of these episodes of Pingu, changed the face of children’s television programs as stricter television guidelines have been put in place to avoid issues with broadcasting concerns and further censorship .
Circa 1990s - onwards
Fun fact about me, I didn’t need to see pingu in order to crawl into a toy box. I wasn’t even 3 yet and I crawled into a plastic toy box, thankfully without a lid. My parents took a picture of it and we still have it. My life of chaos and mischief started before I was even out of my toddler stage.
Pingu isn't a bad penguin tbh, especially when he helped a poor penguin by giving him free food,a beverage and fixed his home
pingu is the smart kid who will making you thinking he needs it whle he is just lazy 😂
I think I should make a correction here: The redubbed version wasn't done specifically for the US release, it's like that on the Japanese DVD releases prior to HiT purchasing Pingu as well.
Australia got the redubbed version as well
So did Finland
Brazil also.
that makes sense, i remember the british version having the new theme and finding it annoying
I was watching in Romania at the time and I don't remember if I was watching on TV or RUclips but personally I remember the redubs and I by far prefer the redubbed intro. 🔥🔥🔥
Regarding that penguin crying over a letter with sad music playing (1:20-1:36), on a Pingu BBC audio cassette from 1993, the narrator (Sarah Greene) explains that this particular penguin, named Mr Pengergrass, had recently lost his great-great-great grandfather, but he'd recover from it as he'd be intheriting his own iceberg.
Oh, and like many, I was terrified by that giant walrus - so much so that I was pleading for it not to be on the 1991 BBC VHS release when I first watched it. Pingu's Little Accidents (Pingu's Lavatory Story) did get a BBC VHS release in 1992, but with a certain scene shortened...
There was a minor controversy in “Pingu’s Admirer” because a sign that respectively read “Perestroika” and “Glasnost” was accused of promoting both communism and the Soviet Union. It was also written in Russian. This, however, did not prompt the episode to be banned.
Edit: In “Music Lessons”, the audio have to be changed due to a copyright infringement. Pygos, a production company, did not obtain the rights to the song used in the original episode. They later changed the music and everything was better.
Hey Steve, if you want to take a break from the disturbing stuff, I highly recommend watching Arthur Christmas, a grossly underrated film made by Sony in 2011. It's characters were designed to be reminiscent of the claymation designs of yore, but is animated completely in 3d, giving the film a surprisingly realistic look that, believe it or not, actually matches the story, humor, and overall tone.
YES- an all-time Christmas favorite!
(Kinda prefer it to ELF, honestly)
Or try watching Lucky and Zorba
Oh for sure! Aardman really surprised everyone with this one. Actually Aardman's shorts like Ident would make good content too
i didn't know it was based on clay animation. i thought it was just a standard typical cgi animation.
the only instance i know off where a film was based on claymation, but was completely cgi was Flushed Away, where, being an Aardman film, all the characters look and feel like something from Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run.
I agree
I think if you can ignore how wierd this show was in it's early days, this is a great kids show, the stop motion animation, the characters, it's all really charming and fun to watch, and honestly I still come back to it now as a teenager.

I loved Pingu, and now I'm a mother and a teacher, he's quite representative of normal kids. 😁😁Apparently the dubbing in the US is because the 'powers that be' thought that US children wouldn't engage with it or understand it. It's supposedly also why the rest of the world sees "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and the US sees it as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's stone". It was changed by the American publisher, Scholastic, because it thought American children wouldn't want to read a book with "philosopher" in the title. Quite strange!
Another fun fact: in the original version of Pingu Looks After the egg the song “Woodpeckers From Space” by videokids was played while pingu was dancing around the igloo but was changed in the redub version
The moving bed in the scary episode gave me nightmares for YEARS lol
Honestly I watched this show for the first ever inside of a children's hospital and it was actually one of the banned episodes, it was truly traumatizing moment where, sitting in a empty hall with gray blue painted walls, the small television propped in the corner of the hallway playing that giant walrus, had to sit there for two more hours watching that show. 2:30 It was likely done to make the show more appealing to American audiences, improve the quality of the audio, make it more audible, & make it sound like Pingu is actually doing his "Noot Noot".
9:27 Pingu: BUT I THOUGHT YOU SAID IT AIRS ON DVD!!!
10:03 i couldnt stop laughing when pingo trolled his dad, and when you put the troll face on pingo you made it 10 times better. Pingo did a 20,000 IQ move
"Pingu high-key gave us SpongeBob-tier memes. Sadly underrated show.

You should totally review Jack and the Beanstalk (1974), Fantasia (1940), Ralph Bakshi's animated LOTR, Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure, About Dressy Sally (aka "Clockman"), Rock and Rule, A Christmas Carol (2009), and Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July.
Omg Fantasia and the animated version of LOTR totally traumatized me when I was little ahahha
NAW NOT CHRISTMAS IN JULY AINT THAT THE ONE WHERE RUDOLPH GETS BLACKMAILED AND FROSTY DIES
@@Vicky93MangaGirl whenever i watched the Fantasia VHS that my mum owned, i always turned it off when it got to the scary giant devil demon thing that sits on the top of a mountain, with all the little imps etc playing around the fire etc. i was terrified of that bit. the rest of the video was great, and i really enjoyed the sorcerers apprentice, and the bit set in ancient Greece, with like the flying horses and the guy drinking the wine.
@@DKQuagmire YEA and to this day I get goosebumps every time the music score comes up 🥲
I've never done drugs, but the tavern dance scene from Ralph Bakshi's LOTR is one of the worst acid trips I ever lived through.
I tikd my friend about the nightmare episode, and she said she had dvd's that were every episode of Pingu, even the ones taken down. The next day, she tild me she found the episode, and has now been scarred for life.
as a child that walrus from "Pingu's Dream" never scared me neither did those scary statues from "Pingu Runs Away" (though I was a bit upset with Pingu being spanked by his mother) also since I was such a tomboy I laughed at the episode "Pingu's Lavatory Story"
You literally unlocked childhood memories that I didn’t know I had. Being from Canada and being born in the late 90s I grew up watching all these episodes and I remember not liking the show because of some of the episodes you talked about. Thanks for the great content!
as a fellow canadian i was shocked that these were considered banned because ive seen every single one~
I hated watching pingu but there wasn’t anything else to watch
"You don't want a goody-goody protagonist who can do nothing wrong. You want to see someone who can be just as big of a shit-bag as you."
Truer words about a Main Character have never been spoken.
Caillou at 22, anyone?
I love how the walrus just immeadletly said "AAAAAAA" b4 the intro even finished.
"No Son Of Mine Will Sit Down While He Pisses" Is Literally The Gem Of This Review XD
Gotta say, some of the family scenes were really uncomfortable to me as a kid. When I rewatched a few of them, I've realised why. I could've relate at some point.
Unfortunately they didn’t phase me bc corporal punishment was normal in my household lol
Lol damn

Steve. You should review an old animated kids movie called "Samson and Sally: The Song of Whales." I remember it as a kid being very creepy and having the most unsettling score. Plus the ending says a lot about where we as a human race might be heading.
I loved that film as a kid and I can't seem to find the full English version anywhere ;-;
Also, Samson and Sally is based on a book by the author behind War of the Birds.
please don't. I really don't wanna see some more doomer shit to put me in hopeless moods.
Isn't that the movie with the creepy scene where a whale panics and drowns in oil? Edit: Yep, yep it is.
Damn looks like a gem. At first I thought it was that whale cartoon that has been a long lost memory in my mind with just about 3 scenes remaining from when I watched it as a little child. Tho looking into it, it seems to me that it was a different whale cartoon I am remembering. It has also a white whale as it's main character, but it is more....square in it's art style. All I can remember is he lost his mother, had PTSD when he tried to do a splash and overcame that PTSD when he had to kill a boat to save his friends (at least that's what I remember).
i was a really big fan of the show and i wanna thank this video for remembering me about pingu, iwatched like all of those episodes before they were banned or censored, and i remember that episode 14 really did scare me, i was frightened by the ice figures (not to talk about the walrus), and i'm 99% sure i have a book about that episode and many others and now i have to find them
I used to watch Pingu all the time. I had watched the US redubbed version, but I still quite enjoyed it a lot.
I’ve seen the ‘banned’ episodes because apparently our dvd with pingu episodes had them.
The walrus episode actually scared me quite a bit when I saw it.
I'll never forget when I found a storybook version of Pingu's Dream, and the giant walrus had all his laughs translated into English, which I found to be much more disturbing, as the walrus wanted to eat Pingu. The fact that the BBC approved of this, when they knew this episode didn't go well with kids is beyond me. There's a reading of this at current on RUclips, and pictures on the Pingu wiki from the book on the giant walrus page.
No matter how hard I might try, I can't for the life of me find it disturbing. It's kind of funny. I wouldn't have felt any differently as a kid, and this idea of it being disturbing seems to have come afterwards as something people start believing because it's said everywhere.
dude "mm mmmmm" 😂
@@TheBcoolGuy funny as an adult but as a child my god that would fuck ya for a few days lol. Sleeping in bed under the covers knowing if you peak it was gonna be there lmfao
ooo that’s creepy
@@ellarose7114 Very creepy indeed.
7:27 Fun fact: 'Pinga' is the slang term for 'penis' in some Latin American countries, don't know how they translate the show here lol
*Holy shit so the Dr Eggman "pingas" meme is all a conspiracy with Hispanic slang*
I think the opening was changed in the U.S. from the original being seen as “misleading” since the og opening is a completely different animation style. The redubbing is more or less just meant as an improvement choices
The O Fortuna theme when the demon walrus came up was VERY necessary.
The very fact that this show was spicy, had some real emotions and dark humor was the reason it was so great!
The US:
Nope, kids cannot handle seeing a penguin urinating.
I urinated and crapped everywhere as a kid. Why do the US people have to be so sensitive?
I just love the fact that we can say someone went about creating and filming claymation piss!
@@killdozer7792 me too, claymation pee is amazing of course
My parents let me watch the original, they didn’t care if I saw a penguin doing his business 😂
12:00 THE HYNEMEN STRIKES AGAIN
The redub was made during production of Series 3+4, which used a different score and cast from the first two seasons (Only S1/2 feature the original score). It was not just a US change, but a global one.
I remember when I was a teen I'd smoke a doob and watch pingu, it cracked me up. I loved that era of shows. And the humor of pingu was so good, the violence of the parents that seemingly came out of nowhere 😂 even though it wasn't English you could tell what was being conveyed while still leaving it partly up to your own interpretation.
I remember as a joke some classmates in collage pulled up a whole 2 hour video of Pingu to watch in class because there wasn't anything else going on, and 10 minutes in when they looked behind them they were surprised to find 10 other people sitting behind them also watching Pingu because the show was enjoyable not just for kids but adults too.
The show definitely could get weird!
I'd like to make a request of The Pagemaster. Lots of us were freaked out by scenes in that film, but honestly even though it isn't the strongest film, it had so much heart poured into it.
Plus that movie had some really great casting Christopher Lloyd Macaulay Culkin Whoopi Goldberg Patrick Stewart and Leonard Nimoy just to name a few
That movie actually gave me nightmares...but it's such a good movie
Damn you're bringing back so many memories from my childhood, idk whether to thank you or curse you 😂
7:50 EVERYBODY LOVES ME (Bart simpson 1993)
I'm Swiss and absolutely loved this show. Funnily enough, all those censored episodes were those that I remembered most, not in a bad way. For example, the scary ice sculptures made me go "oooh I want to live in this/build this", the juices (from the store, get your head out of the gutter) in the pee episode looked absolutely delicious and the step-building looked so very satisfying. Haven't watched the show in many years obviously, but details like this is what I remembered most. The walrus... Idk what the fuck that was about, but it reminds me of those realistic spongebob zoom-ins. I had that one completely blanked out before you reminded me just now. What in the world lmao.
Fun Fact: The walrus design was actually Used in a Swiss commercial that was made by the creator of pingu Otmar Gutmaan before the show was made.
oh really?. is there any source of this commercial?
Creepy
Does that commercial exist anywhere online?
You can find the commercial on Lost Media Archives when you search up pingu.
@@geonuke i tried but couldn‘t find it. Can you send a link?
i remember the walrus episode being scary af when i was little, as well as one u didn't mention, where pingu and his friend fall down a deep cave and get trapped and theres like hugeee dangerous cliffs and caverns they have to traverse hoping to find an exit then finally escaping.
There was one episode in Pingu called "Music Lessons".
This episode was removed or banned because in the original version, there was copyrighted music which The Pygos Group failed to get clearance from the Music Publishers Holding Company (now Warner Music Group).
