Latrell Sprewell was also 34 years old when Minnesota offered that contract. Considering 34 years old is at the tail end of people's careers, I still find it extremely stupid that you would refuse a 3 year $21M contract. Its not even about betting on yourself at that point, when you are on the brink of retirement playing it safe is always the way to go.
The opposite story is Scottie Pippen. He signed a super long contract to ensure that he would have enough money if he got injured or something similar. Right after he signed the salary cap exploded and he could easily have made 10x as much money if he had been a free agent.
But, is still a smart move. The whole point is to have your future secured. He didn't know what if he got injured and cant sign a better deal? Securing the bag is always a better deal.

How about Timberwolves and Shabazz Muhammad. I really miss him from the list. He rejceted a 4 year 40M extension, because he belived 20M/year. End of the season singed a one year minimum contract ($1,795,015) and after that he droped out of the league.
The Sprewell debacle has always struck me as the worst of these cases. Sure, some of the other players lost a greater amount of money, but the Minnesota fit was ideal for him. If that Garnett, Sprewell, and Cassell core had remained in tact, they would have been contenders for perhaps 3 more seasons, and he was genuinely appreciated there despite his history. His reasoning for declining their offer never made any sense and reflected a total misread of his circumstances. The fact that he eventually dropped out of the league and went bankrupt makes it a clincher for the worst "betting on yourself" decision of all time.

The Lakers offered him 6 years $17 million after he averaged 10 points per game in 2000. On pretty poor efficiency for a big man though. He ended up staying with the Magic for I think just $7 million.

They don't know how NBA works nowadays. They thought they are superstars when they are not. NBA teams are looking for rookies and young legs to build into a star. Mngt are not willing to invest on players that are growing old, injury prone, no championship experience and mediocre.

They offered him what players of his caliber make, they did not low ball him, and that is putting mildly. Even if he thinks he is worth more, how much more could it have been? 22 mil, 23mil? You don't take such a risk for such small possible gain, especially when you are a player who never really had a big contract. That should have been his payday. He should fire his agent if he did not tell him to take it.
