- www.metalmethod... - November 15, 1985 - a time when men with giant hair roamed the earth. Their addiction to hairspray is often sighted as the primary reason for the destruction of the earth's ozone layer.
Hawk was lead guitarist Doug Marks (Metal Method guitar instructor), bassist Lonnie Miller (King Kobra, Bullet Boys), Scott Travis on drums (Judas Priest, Fight, Racer X), and Charlie Morrill.
This performance is from Hawk's Roxy show in Hollywood, California. This combination of musicians never recorded an album. The Hawk album was released the following year and featured only Doug Marks from this lineup with vocalist David Fefolt (Masi), and drummer Matt Sorum.
Yes, I think about it but what I'm doing with the guitar lessons takes an incredible amount of time. I would love to do it again but it would be tough for me to give up my "day job" - Metal Method. When I put together Hawk in '85 I put my business on hold and invested $80,000 in the project. On this page is everything that I've got to show for it aside from experience and memories.
I came from the future... And if you join again with the guys and make recitals... You will recover more than the triple you put on the band. Try it Doug.
Oh, Doug. I couldn’t have said it better

I took lessons from Doug back in Denver in 82'. He was the best teacher / mentor I've ever had. He is the major reason that I still play guitar some 30 years later. THANKS DOUG!

Amen! This is how REAL music is played. With raw power and emotion heart and soul. Something that is definately missing from todays bands. Nothing compares to the 80's. Nothing.
Hey Never heard this song till now. You Guys Rocked then And Doug You still Rock now. I Had Purchased Metal Method Seven Eight Years ago sometime in another life and studied that so much. still have the 6 disk set now looking over it finally back home. Vagualy remember the lessons or the stuff I had learned but took what knowledge and moved on with it still remaines deap in side . But now back looking over it once again specificly the 5th and 6th disk of the set. Latley been re-learning old techniques. thanks blessings
It toke lots lots of hair spray back then I used to wear my hair like that ufff lots of aqua net
and he's still alone with no one to love. no one! how can you be so uncaring? did you hear me?! NO ONE!!.
Still no one to fulfill your fantasy lol
The original Bulletboys vocalist was Marc Torien. I believe he still performs with the group from time to time. Charles has performed with the group in recent years. I talked with him this morning and told him I posted this. He'll probably have a response to this.
That's Marc singing sounds good cool stuff Doug nice guitar work too
Sounds almost like a cross between Kiss Black Diamond and The Scorpions Still Loving You which is perfect.
I really enjoy your music, and I had fun learning your guitar lessons. Thank you very much.
Absolutely mind blowing performance! Every member on point. Doug, talk about being at the top your game man! That’s solo brought tears to my eyes…
I don't recognize this screen name but I believe I know who you are. There were a couple of people that were relentless. I said that I would eventually do it and here it is. Before long I hope to have the entire concert up because there's been such a positive response. It's funny, I watch this video more than any other video that I've posted.
the best time for music and great performances !!!!!!
@Johnjthomason You're welcome. Always great to hear from my 80's students.
What amazing ballad! My compliments! Awesome!!!
thanks for the video...i'm 43, always wanted to learn to play and am now fulfilling that dream with the help of your videos. I love the hair, brings back some good memories. The first cassette i gave my oldest son Nickolas was GnR, appettite....he was three years old. lol
MISS MY BROS,,, WE HAD A LOT OF FUN BACK THEN,,,, from the HAWK singer charlie wayne morrill
This is perfection at its best
Thank you. That made my day.
I think every show at all times should be video archived for the future of mankind. All genres, all venues everywhere.. record it all
Doug .. I bought those tapes. Helped me play metal guitar! Nice job ! Man a long time ago
This is a badass band!
Love the songs!
I LOVE THIS IT TOOK ME BACK TO 1985, I MISS 85,, HAWK ROCKED,,

cool site bro... from me the HAWK SINGER
Fantastic voice, brother.
The Bullet Boys. Their bass player, Lonnie gave me a gold album of that recording. So, to answer your question I just had to look to my right. The writing was on the wall so to speak.
HELLO EVERY ONE I JUST WANT TO SPREAD A LITTLE LOVE TO YAAA... GOOD DAY.
Charles Wayne Morrill can't believe I missed out on HAWK back in the day, This rocks man!
Great singing there.
I met you with Ron Keel in 2005 or 2006....memory fail....acoustic cowboys....you 2 rocked a smallclub....still got my photo of you and I and Ron....great singer u r!
Those were the days Thanks for sharing
WOW, I've been seeing dougs metal method advertised for last 20 years and finally got around to picking it up a couple years ago. This is my first time seeing hawk and I'm kicking myself in the ass for not getting into them sooner. Live and learn my friends
Hawk is happening.....Great metal...Ive been listing lately...
Great band. The question is why were they not huge ? Pound for pound probably better than most bands of their time. The killer guitar and band with equal talent. Vocals are spot on, drums and bass awesome
Yes, we were searching for drummers and found Scott in Virginia and relocated him to California. After Hawk broke up he joined Racer X. No, I never met Paul Gilbert.
2020 and still watching.
Doug did hit it big. He has Metal Method fans everywhere... and not to mention he still managed to make a living off of his talent. Great player... and I'm glad he has shared his guitar playing secrets with us.
Thanks for posting this Doug I was 15 then and I had 3 or 4 of your lessons from back then on cassette. I have since passed them on to my son when he turned 13 or so (2005) It was harder for me find a cassette player then it was to find my old lessons!!
A Master piece!! Thanks to everyone At Hawk!!
2022 still alive 🤩
i swear ive watched this video 10 times since yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doug dude,
Hey... I just wanted to thank you for the CD, bro'. Rock on.
Thanks. I plan to post a few more of these.
Damn, what a sick voice!!
Doug - I bought my first guitar in 1985 but only recently purchased the Metal Method DVD's. Even though I am an advanced player now, I have really enjoyed watching the DVD lectures and seeing your approach to teaching guitar. Since 1985 I have collected an embarassingly large number of guitar instruction books, tapes, CD's and DVD's. I think your teaching approach is definitley one of the best. I only wish I had picked up the course when I first started playing!
I love this song! Everything is great, the guitar, vocals, bass, drums, it's EPIC! Bands need hair like that nowadays...
ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER - GREAT VOICE AND GUITAR PLAY ON THE SAME LEVEL AS ULI JON ROTH AND MICHAEL SCHENKER
Thanks. That's an awesome comment and it's appreciated.
@EvaSlash Thanks. It was heartfelt, that's for sure. It's kind of difficult describing my approach. I'll try. All of the solos started out as completely improvised. As time passed, some of the slow melodic parts were repeated. A lot of the fast stuff is just me "going for it" but even some of that stuff ended up having some structure. None of it was memorized in a note-for-note kind of way.
Gawd damn shit made me tear up 😢 powerful I am only 20 coming up on 21 I dont what I would do without this album or band shits gotten me through rough times. I prefer this sound.
Cool video. Thanks for teaching me to play guitar Doug...way back in '84. Metal Method rules.
i just put a bunch of Hawk songs on my ipod because i just watched this. its one of my favorite bands now!
I am also their cousin, spent this past weekend with Charles and his family in Nashville and watch the new band PLATINUM ROSE practice. It was great to see them again.
Absolutely fucking amazing !! A time when metal was fresh and powerful. Wish I was there that night. Doug marks rocks !!!!!!
OMG! Awesome find for me as I lost contact with Charles and David many many years ago. I'm their 2nd cousin Tim. Please, if you have more Hawk videos with Charles post them. I still love his voice after all these years.
Thanks for putting that online Doug !Remember some years before I pm you about Hawk vids ! You've finaly fulfiled part of my dream =)))
Thanks, Kat...!
You guys were awesome
I would have loved to see this show, but I didn't hit the Roxy for the first time until I was 18 (1989). Man I miss those days, the best genre of music ever!
It was fun.
Doug Marks I bet, I missed a lot of amazing bands. I used to go see a band called Zion Heights there around 1990. They were a local band from Thousand Oaks. They never made it but the house was still packed everytime they played.
this is awesome!
thanks for all the good lessons Doug. i was a kid when i started with metal method. been a very long time but you helped me get it straight. cheers brother!!
I think I was there that night. I just don’t remember! 😎
November 15, 1985. I went to work at a nearby supermarket, then to a football play-off game that day.
Cool video....forgot all about them....Dont remember them releasing too many albums....
Thanks, Doug! PureRocker hooked me up and I'm all over it !
That's great. Charles Morrill is the vocalist

Great song...sounds amazing.
Crowd is bored because they saw great bands every day of the week at the time...spoiled brats.
Awesome take back to the 80's! Some say hair bands were cheese but really was a great time.I learned the Metal Method when I was like 15 years old. Been playing for 24 years now and my metal band has cd's out with songs on the radio. Thanks to Hawk,Doug and Metal from the 80's to now.
Great song. The 80's were definately the best decade for rock. The clothes, music, and hair. lol To bad im from the 90's.
Thanks. You never know what the future will bring. I don't really have anything that was actually recorded by this lineup aside from several video recordings.
