You inspired me! I bought a small home 2 years ago after my divorce. And I thought I was a minimalist but I feel like there is clutter creeping up on me. So this weekend I am going to declutter and deown!
Well, We move in 6 days and didn't even fill a box so I guess we're going to declutter a lot and very quickly 😅 By chance I've been a minimalist for a few years now ! Thank you a lot for the reminder. My favourite decluttering tip is always to start reverse : with what to keep instead of what to donate or get rid of. To me it changes the world when it comes to sort things.
Wow, when you showed everything out of the cupboards, it really hit home with the amount of stuff that we all really have. Thanks for helping me to realize that, Yes, it is better to be a de-owner than to just declutter.
Brilliant! I also use the cabinet above the fridge for seasonal supplies (the turkey platter for Thanksgiving, the Christmas Cookie press and holiday decorative bundt pans, the huge cowboy-themed spigot-equipped iced tea dispenser for 4th of July picnics, etc. I don't mind getting up there on a stepladder a few times a year. The cabinet is useless otherwise, since I'm only 5'3"!
Kate, mustard doesn’t go bad, the date was the best if used by not an expiration date, manufacturers do that to get you to buy more. The best by date just means it loses some of its flavor after that date. Currently working on my sewing room, haven’t used most of the stuff in there for over 6 years. Time to de own the fantasy self stuff.
My kitchen counter tops are so full. I also have a huge shelf in my bathroom ( my husband sleeps during the day so I need a place I can get my clothes) that houses my everyday socks and long underwear
I took written inventory of everything in downstairs and upstairs freezers and keep list on the refrigerator. I use to meal plan. It’s saving me $$ on groceries!
I also feel like by de-owning an item includes the commitment to not rebuy a similar item. I have permanently freed myself of that item. 😊 I hope that makes sense. Thanks Kate I’m still de cluttering and de-owning things from my home. This challenge has come at the right time.
I don’t have a pantry so I bought a chrome rack to use in the basement and I store all my stocked items and all my bigger things that don’t get used often - cookie cutters, pizza stone, crockpot, blender, etc. Everything in one place and out of the way.
Took me about a week, but yay I just deculttered 100 things! I consider myself a minimalist, so it was hard past 60. I really like chanllenges like this, 'cause it forces me to look at things differently. I feel so good! Thanks for the inspiration!
Well, I smashed that challenge Kate! I have now set myself some further 100 objects challenges - 100 for the church jumble sale at the end of the month and 100 to sell. I will also continue to go through the house, decluttering hundreds more! Thank you!
Hi Kate, your kitchen looks good after your major declutter. I have a cabinet above the fridge where I keep crystal wine glasses I use for Thanksgiving & Christmas
I started decluttering my closet today. A huge hall. 2 Bags for Good Will & items trashed. I will do my bedroom dressers & drawers next, then move to the kitchen. I have an overflow of items to use up that was pushed behind & now I can use them before buying more.
Tape in the drawer? 100% I never knew I needed tape in my kitchen, but boy, am I glad I moved it in there a couple of years ago. And the trick about the containers for the party stuff and storing it in those awful cabinets? You are BRILLIANT! I am totally going to copy you! Thanks for the collab!
Kate I love your channel and how you always show us clips (like the cups) because as a teacher - if find it helps me so much to understand concepts and show it to my students when I have visuals. Your personality is so fun and upbeat too. Thank you for all you share Kate.
Usband made a coffee mug holder with 8 pegs to hold mugs & it has a shelf @ the bottom to hold "coffee condiments & he hung it on the wall above the counter where the coffee pot sits. No cabinet space needed
This is great timing! Last week, I de-owned my kitchen, china cabinet, master closet and guest bedroom closets and dressers! I had three junk drawers in the kitchen alone! 😮. I do this every 6 months with the promise of not replacing my empty spaces with new junk! Everything is tidy and easier to keep clean! I would love to attack my garage but that is my husbands sacred space so I just close my eyes! 😂😂
I have to time my suggestions around clutter in the garage… if he seems agreeable to thin I offer to help and then can lead him thru ! It’s worked ! But yes they love their stuff in the garage and I love he can fix stuff … 😂glenda
Know what I had to RUclips: what the heck do I use a lazy Susan cabinet for?! The unanimous answer: small appliances like the toaster, the food processor….and it works!
Motivating! Thank you. Will be tackling many area in my home! Kitchen is top on the list. Crazy how things sneak in there and fill all the space. Time to let go, de own 😉
Kate, I had the exact same thing happen recently. Needed to clean out my kitchen cabinets because I was supposed to get a remodeled kitchen. The apartment people reneged(not in the budget until early next year). Anyway, I cleared the cabinets 2 or 3 at a time so I wouldn’t be overwhelmed. Then made my 3 piles, keep, donate, throw away. Then I went to the dollar store and got different size organizers for my junk drawers. (Yes I had 2). Did it in 2 days taking my time. I always remember work smart, not hard 😅.
Kate, you're so brave for taking everything out of all of your cabinets. That level would send me straight into paralysis! So many good points made in this video, Ive been meaning to so some decluttering but it's garden season 😂 this is the kick I need to get started because it's too hot to be outside right now! My sister will be visiting so I'll start in our guest bedroom which became the dumping room during the pandemic and we haven't had any reason to clear out until now.
YES! Decluttering and minimizing....letting go...these seem to be a theme for me this year! When I spring cleaned, I went through practically every drawer, cabinet, closet, etc. and got rid of a ton of things. I LOVE what you said about getting rid of things that give you an immediate negative vibe. I received a Christmas gift from a family member which was a t-shirt with something printed on it. It was a Christian sentiment and I am a Christian, so what's the problem, right?! Many things... for one, the person left the tag on it and I am quite sure that person didn't pay the price that was on the tag so, for me, it was like the person wanted to dupe me (has happened before...this person seems to want you to think they spent more than they actually did). Another issue... the phrase on the shirt wasn't a Biblical quote...just a loose general meaning and, for some reason, it bothered me. Also...I don't really like t shirts with sayings on them. For me this was proof that the person doesn't really know me (it's a close family member....they should know me, or at least make an effort). As I type this I sound shallow, but this is family stuff and there is past crap... As soon as I opened the t shirt on Christmas I felt awful. I threw it on a shelf. Finally, I put it in the donate bag. I feel better now. I also got rid of some sentimental things that I'd kept for years and years. While this was harder, I'm glad that I did it. I'm going through some life "thing" where I'm just done holding on. I want to feel uplifted and free of things holding me down. I am a person in my family who always shows up, does her part, holds on to all of the sentimental things (remembers all of the occasions...), etc. and it's made me feel like a "flower in the attic"--like I'm trapped in this role. It's lightened my load to get rid of things and have both physical and mental space. We recently went away for 5 days and when we returned I truly saw the difference the spring cleaning/decluttering has made! When my youngest and I walked into the house after being gone I remarked, "WHY did I think our house was cluttered or dirty? NOW I see the room we've made and how clean it is!" Feels great!
Hi Kate. Love your channel ❣ After just spending about 6 months boxing up and then deciding to revisit every single thing I own upon arrival in my new home I'm looking forward to your video. I donated furniture and appliances to a local food bank for their new offices & kitchen, shipped "culinary" and brand new household items to my sons and took a car load to a consignment shoppe that buys on the spot! I used some of that money to buy new chairs (on sale 😊) for my back patio without spending money from my new budget designed with a plan & focus that has begun to work really well. Tips: it's not always about the money you could get for things (which is often way less than you think) but to be present in the moment as you experience the joy in seeing the things you loved, used or purchased and never used getting a new life 🥰 It's a palpable process to really declutter. A learning experience. My hope is I'll be mindful going forward and try not buy new things again without necessary or useful joyful purpose.
@@KateKaden I guess I should say I de-owned many many things. There is a huge difference 👍🏻 third purge in my lifetime. This time it hit me differently. 🕊

Kate, I recently went through my kitchen cabinets for the reason you talked about today. I love cups. They are neat gifts given to me on special occasions. But why would I need over 40 cups in my cabinet? So I let go of many and took to a thrift store. Good feeling.
I decluttered kitchen cabinets and a bedroom after my husband died. I need to do it all over again. And I have Christmas mugs and serving dishes in my cabinet above the refrigerator. I switch out the mugs right after Thanksgiving so I get about six weeks of use out of them every year.

🙌 for sure!!! Less and less to manage as I get older too!!! And totally agree on function and set up is key! Getting ready to do a declutter of my kitchen as well and video it! And a budget friendly “spruce up” of the kitchen. Lol. Been doing a declutter of the bedroom right now. Almost done with it! (Man… going through clothes can be so emotional… I’ve been all over the place! )
We are still struggling a bit with our new-to -us truck but while hanging out a bit more at home again, have started to work through a play house turned shed turned into a "just toss it in" place. Once we actually started to address it, its not too, too bad.

The cabinets above my fridge have my special occasion glassware and delicate Christmas pottery ... only need the step ladder once a year! What I need help with is ... paperwork! I can't ever seem to get a grip on my paper piles! Ugh!
My bedroom, next is kitchen, and than the dreading basement,, de owning always gives me great peace. (half of my basement are not even mine they we parked there for sme years)
My husband recently ask me if I knew there’s a small crock pot above the fridge. Lol nope and I borrowed one for a party last holiday season hahaha. I did clean the pantry not long ago. I took a marker and put the exp date boldly on the stuff.
My frugal mission this year is to figure out a super useful way to repurpose jeans!!!! We have a pile of jeans a year that most of the fabric is still in great condition, just not wearable jeans anymore. I hate to throw all that money away.
My parents always put our “fancy china” in those cabinets above the fridge when I was a kid and I adopted that same habit. Doesn’t seem like the smartest idea if we ever need them, but we never do so I guess it’s just sitting up there for safety reasons since they’re never ever used😂
@@little_miss_vintage I get the heirloom stuff, but if no one is using them and enjoying them then what’s the point of having them? If it’s just to pass them down I’m willing to bet the next generation doesn’t want them. Just my thoughts. I can’t tell you how many heirlooms I inherited but I use the “good stuff” and have given the stuff I don’t use to those who will.
Where do you keep your batteries ? I don’t keep anything in those high cabinets. I would to see a sped up cleaning video for the next area you work on. And see the end result.
I would love nothing more but to declutter my kitchen but my husband makes it impossible! He cooks more that I do and the more I get rid of things the more he thinks he needs. I had the kitchen so nice and not full of stuff but after a couple years, it’s back to a disaster 😢
Have you tried a "quarentine box"?! Where you declutter items and put them in a cardboard box, then put the box in the garage or a closet for 30 days and if he didn't miss them during the 30 days then you get rid of them!
You inspired me! I bought a small home 2 years ago after my divorce. And I thought I was a minimalist but I feel like there is clutter creeping up on me. So this weekend I am going to declutter and deown!

YASSS!
My parents always put our “fancy china” in those cabinets above the fridge when I was a kid and I adopted that same habit. Doesn’t seem like the smartest idea if we ever need them, but we never do so I guess it’s just sitting up there for safety reasons since they’re never ever used😂
What are you saving the fancy China for? Life is too short to just let it sit.
The fancy china!! :):) Thanks for sharing with us!
@@SassySue67 they’re heirlooms that will be passed down. If I had them for any other reason - they’d be gone!😊
Normally the batteries are in the junk drawer! But I'm currently out! LOL! (And they really aren't junk, so I might need to find a new spot!)
I love to declatter but I have nothing to declutter anymore😂😂😂
WAY TO GO!!! Great work!
My trouble spot is the rec room in my basement that has become a den of storage piles. Mostly Christmas decorations.
YASS! Good spot to tackle!
It’s amazing how we don’t use stuff when it sits in a drawer or a box!!!
Right?❤️❤️
I got rid of so much all my high cupboards are empty.
YASSS Charlene! WAY TO GO!
👍
Thank you for watching!
I declutter something every day, this way it doesn’t hit ya all at once 😬
That’s a great plan! ❤️❤️
💖💖💖
Thank you for watching!
Ok. Why are you wearing a hoodie in July when it’s hot as blazes down south?🤣🤣🤣
Once you have cleared all the clutter what do you do? Buy more junk to clutter up your home again.
Praying I don't do it again! (but I'm sure it will ebb and flow:):)
❤
Challenge accepted. Have 2 junk drawers in my kitchen
HECK YES Megan!!!!
I would love nothing more but to declutter my kitchen but my husband makes it impossible! He cooks more that I do and the more I get rid of things the more he thinks he needs. I had the kitchen so nice and not full of stuff but after a couple years, it’s back to a disaster 😢
Ahhhh!
Have you tried a "quarentine box"?! Where you declutter items and put them in a cardboard box, then put the box in the garage or a closet for 30 days and if he didn't miss them during the 30 days then you get rid of them!
de-cluttering and de-owning is the same thing...
moving stuff around and putting it away is neither, that's cleaning up.
Basement
YASS!
I just couldnt type.. msybe because autoplay was on..
Oh no! So glad you were here though!
