Anyone who doesn’t really understand certain motivations or humans can love without it necessarily being sexual will never “get” the film. For 1992 it was a absolute gem … and still is tbh.

I truly applaud everyone in the creation of this haunting portrayal of the true 'wars' in life; the outer entanglements, and the inner ones, which often bring the two together in both heartfelt as well as tragic endings.

And amazing, dream-like thriller-romance, which I often wish I could unsee just to experience the many twists and turns again.

I will never forget this movie. I grew up very sheltered, I didn't know anything about trans people, gay, or IRA, etc. I started to live abroad and went on a vacation, it was a backpacking trip to Mexico where I learned and met many people on the way....and I was sickly on Christmas eve 1996 so I ended up staying in the hostel (in Mexico city) watching TV. And this movie was playing. I was surprised/shocked and needless to say, it was a type of 'education' and revelation for me. Beautiful movie.

The movie started out amazing but I don't know I just couldn't understand the character's motivations, none of them. I didn't like the movie overall besides the Acting but I can see why people would like it...
    Few questions:
1.) Who TF would have a laughy jokey relationship with the person that kidnapped you and is assigned to kill you ???
2.) How did Fergus not realize that Dil was a guy ??? When she was first cutting his hair I was like damn she has hands like a Quarterback.
3.) After finding out Dil was a guy, Fergus clearly wasn't attracted to her anymore BUT was still kissing her from time to time???
4.) Why did they even let Fergus back into their IRA terrorist plans after he messed up the Jody Kidnapping ???
5.) The leader of the IRA gang was the smartest up until it was time to do the assassination and then he was the dumbest, why did he run out into the middle of the street shooting like he's Terminator and got killed two seconds later ?
6.) Why in the hell did Fergus take the fall for Dil after she killed Jude ???

Aha wow, this is definitely the first comment I'd had that is so in-depth! I won't pretend to know everything about Neil Jordan's intentions or say that the film is flawless but I can have a go at answering.
      1. I think Fergus never intended to have a relationship with Dil at first. His desire to escape the IRA and hide out in London was partly based on a promise he made to Jody to look out for his girlfriend. Ironically, by doing that, he ends up endangering Dil's life when Jude tracks Fergus down and gives him her ultimatum. The relationship grows by accident for Fergus, discovering his feelings for (her) slowly. Remember, when Fergus discovers the truth, he has a dream sequence where a very happy Jody, in full cricket gear, is laughing at him, as if he's played Fergus and has had the last laugh at one of his kidnappers.
      2. Well spotted, a lot of people at the time didn't.
      3. Because love is complicated. Some of Neil Jordan's films play on the theme of sexuality, see Interview with the Vampire, and notions of hetero or homo or bisexuality are very fluid. Fergus is a character in conflict, like with his position in the IRA, it would make sense for him to be conflicted about Dil as well.
      4. I don't think Jude or the other terrorists wanted him back. They were setting him up for a suicide mission. Payment for his betraying their cause.
      5. The IRA leader would have had his own problems with his superiors if he failed. I imagine he was pushed to desperation, and then was quickly killed for his stupidity as a consequence.
      6. Because he realises that he loves her. Perhaps not in a sexual way, but his selfless act could only come from a place of deep love, not wanting to see her serving time for what amounts to his selfishness in bringing her into his world. I also think it goes back to his promise to Jody that he would look after her if anything happened to him.
      Hope that helps :-)
