I've never known a U-Haul agent shop to check plates upon a return. Anyone of a dozen previous renters could have attached the phoney plates.

This could be cleared up, if these dudes are "innocent." Most U-Haul shops take pictures before it leaves. They caught that tag in the shot, and if it's the same - it's on the shop, but likely it was these Nazis, and the Troopers are right to gather their info and charge them.

Nope, every time i've ever rented a uhaul or car they always always check the plates and walk around the car with me. Of course that doesn't mean all employees are good but giving the wrong car to someone is a big mistake.

This has all the earmarks of a set up. Why would they track a U-Haul from the air?. I've rented many U-Hauls and never had them check the plates the vin or nothing else. U-Haul literally checks for body damage and hand you the keys and you're done. Two-tiered justice system at work.

I have rented from Enterprise and discovered that the tags had expired a year earlier. I called and told them I wouldn't drive it back unless they could fix the problem.

I can't speak for all u-haul locations, but I can assure you that my local u-haul would never allow a vehicle to leave their yard with the wrong plates on it.
I rented a trailer and hooked it up.myself. I don't recall the office guy taking time to walk outside. Heck I don't want a helicopter chasing me down when I am towing a junk car

Of course before you drive out of U-Haul they not only check the plate they also checked the vin in the dash, and the door, and make sure it corresponds to the contract that you sign and take with you showing that you're entitled to have that vehicle in your possession. Thats totally incorrect! U-Haul dealers are always renting out vehicles missing $hitloads of proper documentation. I know this because I ran a U-Haul corporate store in Lansing MI. U-Haul rents their vehicles based on "unit" numbers, Easily posable they rented that to them the way it was. Minimum wage workers don't generally go the extra mile for a $hitty company like U-Hail, and if they're busy anything could pass through even corporate lots. And since that plate is from AZ (where U-Haul is located) it more than likely is their plate.
The bigger problem here is a plate that doesn't come back to anything, only federal agencies and police departments get that kind of treatment.

Since the OKC bombing, cops get pretty nervous when right wingnuts start renting uhaul/ryder trucks. Remember OKC? The feds certainly do. The whole point of this stop was to disrupt their plans. Fortunately these wingnuts threw on a fake plate, so the cops took the opportunity to get the truck towed along with whatever weird ass riot gear they had. Notice that nobody in the truck argued too much about the plate? If the cops were towing your uhaul wouldn't you argue at least a little? They got off easy, and the cops broke up the party. Seems fair.

This is not at all the drivers fault or his concern, it is a rented a truck has has plausible deniability and no reason to ever check a tag, it is the responsibility of the rental agency to make sure the vehicle is legal. And nobody try to tell me they have a responsibility as a driver of a rental vehicle, even mechanics are exempt of making sure a vehicle is legal they test drive.
This stop had nothing to do with tags. Patriot Front is on the domestic terrorism watchlist- white supremacists with a taste for organized violence. They had just left a rally with a truckload of riot gear. The cops already knew who was in the truck, and what was in the back. These wingnuts may/may not have changed the plate, but 3 nazis with tim mcveigh haircuts in a rental truck probably should be pulled over and have their plans disrupted anyway.

How can a plate number not exist? Are there certain plates created that are kept from police databases?
They show up in the database. If it's a "special" plate, there'll be a code that the dispatcher uses to tell the cop it's a law enforcement vehicle. "Normal" government vehicles have government tags on them. In this case, there is something 'fishy' going on with the plate on this vehicle and it's probably the Patriot Front that did it.

U-Haul has had this or something similar to this happen to people before. Something dumb such as the truck may have been in a maintenance facility and they removed the plate and it got mixed up with an old plate that was being sent back. The only thing I've ever seen U-Haul ppl look at when they give the paperwork over is the U-haul vehicle ID number. The counter ppl just assume the vehicle from U-Haul is good,

I’ve always checked the plates matched the contract, but never the VIN… I’ve had different experiences with U-Haul rental offices. They’re not all the same. At one of them, I’m pretty sure the guy giving me the keys was on meth or something…

Glad law enforcement ran across these guys, they're obviously up to something nefarious. However, highly doubt that any of this holds up in court, especially with a decent lawyer.
The suspects appear to have said nothing incriminating and, unless there is additional evidence, it will be next to impossible to prove that the renters were the ones who changed the plate. How many people can honestly say that they take their rental paperwork and ensure that the plate on the vehicle matches the paperwork? Even if 100% of commenters on here said they always check, we are still a very small sample-size compared to the rest of the world.
Unfortunately "wrong" doesnt always equal "illegal" in our system.
They didn't 'run across them', they followed them from the demonstration with helicopters. I don't know if they're feds or not, but there was nothing illegal in the truck and I'd bet anything that when a truck is returned to U-HAUL they only look for damage and don't check the plates.

This seemed incredibly vindictive and out of line.
The vehicle was being tracked because they were part of a protest? So what, are protesters somehow considered dangerous now? Do we treat them like terrorists? Were they also tracking vehicles that belong to people who are on the other side of the protest? I doubt it.
Those young men had zero motive to change that license plate. It makes no sense. The trooper was so overzealous in his conviction that they had changed the plate but he never stopped to ask himself why they would have done that. It’s ridiculous.
UHaul is gonna catch a lawsuit over this.
They did it to hide their origin, identities and intentions. The bogus plate is what makes them suspicious and gives probable cause. Their riot gear was in the back. They aren't feds or antifa or BLM. They are aspiring baby Nazis. They are too pretty and clean cut to be anything else.

All uhaul trucks are registered in Arizona. That was an Arizona plate. Those guys did not attach plates.
The funny part about all of this is that the cops are no longer playing around with these guys. My guess is that the gang itself put the fake plates on the vehicle, to make it harder for groups like SPLC and others to track and trace. On a police stop like this, they're screwed. A good follow-up would be to contact You-Haul and ask if that was actually their plate -- was there a mix-up, etc. The actual real plates might be hidden in the truck somewhere. Like behind the seat.

I guarantee the police made that up because they would get to search the vehicle that way even if the driver didn't want them to they used impounding it as a reason to search without a warrant. I guarantee that plate does come back to that U-Haul truck there's just no way for them/renters to verify that on the side of the road. And I guarantee all charges were dropped and U-Haul had to pay for the impound fees. And even the tickets for no seatbelt would have to be dropped because the reason for pulling them over was the so-called bad plate and once the charge for that is dropped they can no longer keep a secondary charge dirty pigs just using dirty tricks they thought they were going to catch themselves a domestic terrorists or gun trafficking across state lines or some b******* like that... f*** the police
