I am watching this series for like forth or fifth time since the time I discovered your channel with video where you made rifle stock... and every time your channel inspires me, especialy when I see the amount of work and detailing you put into your projects... I definitly know that this is one of the nicest and coolest channels. I never knew I was into machining until I discovered you and uncle Bumblefuck and started watching everything from other perspective... other than just lazy consumerism. Things that you make with your hands (and tools) are just amazing and pleasant to eyes...

I am planning to make similar CNC. Already found fixture table 600x360 mm. I hope this winter will weld frame
Screws, nuts, bearings are available for purchase. Some custom mounting details i can order in local plasma cutting shop. (or cut with angle grinder)
Also when you will assemble first version of router it will help make parts for itself:)

Most of these guys will never tell you the price.
They want to tell you every fvcken thing but the price.
'' I GOT A GOOD DEAL " or ...I got it at a good price.
I guess, they figure people will say........''YOU GOT ROBBED".

It's also hard to calculate at times too. It's like most hobbies, money disappears quickly, some purchases work well, others quickly get replaced with something more suitable. Then prices on things change anyway, so an exact answer isn't really accurate for long.

  • @AlexLTDLX

Ok... Everything about this is amazing. I have a few questions though. Your production values are excellent - how did you get those dolley shots of the router at the very beginning? Your camera work is generally excellent - what are you using to shoot this stuff?
Your creativity in working with video is unique (I've been in TV professionally for over 20 years). You mix graphics, still and moving video and nifty special effects techniques in a very natural, visceral and often times witty way. Where did the rubber band rifle moving parts graphic come from? Was that from your CAD software?
Finally, and the question most everyone wants to know... where do you find the time to do all this?
    Great stuff. Wow.

      Thanks Alex!
The opening shot was a couple of 2x4's strategically screwed into the ceiling and a 1/4" bolt holding my camera. I spun the whole rig a few times (a million?) until I got a smooth take. I use a Nikon D300s dslr. And yes, the rifle was from my CAD; I use Solidworks.
Thanks for watching, glad you liked it!

Nice. Thanks for the reply. I thought I spotted something vertical reflected in the plexiglass, but couldn't identify it. Clever.
Looking forward to more videos. And you sound a bit like Alan Alda. Mash impressions in an upcoming video?
      Thanks!

Ow! What a dad! Builds a heavy-duty CNC router to make his son a rubber band rifle.
I will always think fondly of those times my dad had me join him on so,e project or other. Never anything this exotic, but he was building his children with what was at hand. I think our most exotic was a duck-boat.However they turn out, you gave ‘em what you could. Hopefully they’ll take it and run with it and be good people with awesome skills!
    Best Wishes.....keep ‘em coming.

Fantastic. Extraordinary level of effort and care in construction. You have convinced me of two things: 1) I would really like a CNC router, and 2) I have neither the skill nor patience to make one from scratch. 😄 Thanks so much for sharing this.

Very nice finished product Tony. Looks nice and beefy. I've been a machinist, programmer, production engineer for forty years, and still enjoy making precision parts out of scrap stock. Yours is the first CNC router that I've seen that looks rugged enough to machine real production parts. Bravo !!!

Excellent work. My favorite part was seeing his kids face light up with the rubber band rifle. That alone makes all the hours of work worth it. Now that my kids are grown up, I totally miss the awe and wonderment in their eyes when they see something cool for the first time. Keep up the great work and awesome vids.

Orange tip that thing NOW. I don't care that your child isn't going to be carrying this thing around in public, but if there is any game you don't want to play, having a gun look-a-like that isn't marked with a orange tip is one of them.

Gloves and non-skid sneakers too. And he should probably only use that at the range under the watchful supervision of an RO.

Old Growth - that is a chuckle. Actually, in high tech Physics the instruments have to be made from steel that isn't traced with radioactive elements. As it seems there is so much scrap and recycle and reuse the steel is generally mixed up. However they came into pure gold. The old (pre WW I) shipyards in Oakland were being upgraded for new ships and cranes... The old had to be removed. The heavy and very thick plates were tested and all collected. World wide this is happening. As old is scrapped it is picked up. I have a Degree in Physics, Math, Engineering. Busy guy. Wonderful project you are on! I know - this is an old thread but not for me. Just one of a series.

It may be a silly little rubber band gun to you, but I bet your son will cherish it as well as the time spent in the shop helping Dad. You should let him do all the welding btw, he seems to be much better at it, lol. Awesome series, certainly an upgrade over the aluminum 80/20 framed diy routers I've seen in the past.

hello Old Tony, I watched all videos in one sitting, I have to tell you that I found these video so informative and interesting that I couldn't stop watching until I finished all. You style if delivering information was so smooth and workmanship skill were far superior to those so far I have seen. All I can say I'm very very impressed. I have bought a CNC router from China but was never able to get it working. that was the reason I have been watching these videos. I m sure thousands of people must have got benefited from these great videos.

I know this comment is more than 3 years after this series was posted, but I want to thank you for both the entertainment (dry humor is the best) and the educational experience of sharing your voyage of this build. I have always been fascinated with how things work and are made and you have ignited in me my mechanical creativity side once again. Thanks for your efforts in making your videos.

Well I have finished my all steel DIY CNC machine based on this "This old Tony" design. I modified the design on the two supporting beams for the Y axis rails, just to have adjustment. So I joined parts by screws instead of welding. I introduced a fine adjustment by means of M6 screws for leveling, and and M8 for strong holding. When machine adjustment, looking for squareness, I do not have adjustment on XZ movement (like your machine) and I only adjust machine table and Y rails (planes XY and YZ) related to XZ plane. I have begun machining aluminum and the whole cutting process looks and sounds very well. Better than thinking I am finishing the job, I am planning now an update for motors and drivers. Thanks you This old Tony one more time for these three videos you gave us.
