- SMG guide and founder, goes over two ways to coil a rope for your next adventure and “why we wrap ropes the way we do.”.
The first option demonstrates a butterfly coil technique starting with one end of the rope and finishing with a nail knot. This is a useful way to carry the rope with a backpack on a long hike into the climb or if you need to find one end of rope when starting the day out.
The second option showcases the backpack coil, a useful rope coiling technique for when you don’t have a way to carry the rope hands free. Often the occurs at the top of medium length routes when no one in the party carries a backpack and there is a need to walk off or scramble off.
All videos and techniques have been peer reviewed by trained AMGA instructors and guides.
