    Few of us realize how much this incredible background music affected our emotions and perception while watching the original Star Trek. No other Star Trek series, or even Star Trek movies that followed, had such expressive, emotional music as the original series. All the latest Star Trek sequels have soulless, synthetic background music that does very little to stir your emotions.

    • @jimmclaughlin1549

      Having watched the original series as a kid, and continuing to watch these episodes down thru the years, I had never until now just listened to the music by itself. I am amazed by the power and beauty of it as never before. Some powerful composers... Also one hell of a live studio orchestra. People are not able to play like that now.

      @@jimmclaughlin1549 The artificial, sterile-sounding music we hear today evokes the electronisized, digitized and synthesized world we now live in. I agree, I don't think today's generation of composers could write music like the '60s Star Trek had.

      I mostly agree except for the score for Star Trek II - the Wrath of Khan. That sort of swashbuckling, nautical sound made it the only Trek movie that captured that feel, that of the original show for me. And IMO the best Star Trek movie they ever made, bar none.

    I'm hearing lots of Stravinsky (Rite of Spring) and elements from Shostakovich's symphonies in the darker, more dramatic passages early on in this. People who like the darker-sounding TOS music but don't know its references from 20th C. classical repertoire (the composers mentioned above, plus others) may want to check out the latter's works (particularly the Rite of Spring- Bernstein's earlier recording of it being one good place to start online). The Rite itself may be the most influential piece of music for the 20th C. Adventure-themed soundtracks in general draw a lot on Holst ("The Planets," particularly "Mars, the Bringer of War"), Wagner, plus Stravinsky, Shostakovich's symphonies, Ligeti (directly used in '2001'), and modernists like the latter.

    So strange that, in every compilation of music from TOS and specifically Shore Leave, I never hear my favorite cue. It comes just as Kirk first hears Sulu shooting his gun (but doesn't know it's Sulu shooting), and three away team members run towards the sound. Over this, the soundtrack quotes the series theme, but it puts it into a slightly minor key, which is the most menacing version of it I've ever heard. It's only about 15 seconds long, though, so I guess that's why it always gets left out in favor of the White Rabbit comedy music.

    • @flashgordon6238
      @flashgordon6238 Год назад

      emperordalek, Fish Man has that section of theme music as he collected the actual soundtracks from each episode and removed the dialogue. I just listened to the cue you mention. He has the tracks linked off YT to a site called MEGA. You can get the link for the zip file or files from his YT page. You can hear the gunshot at 4.31 of his Shore Leave track. That is the start of Kirk, Yeoman Barrows and McCoy running toward the gunshot.

Personally, I would have opened gone from the credits to "Shore Leave", starting playful, and then (before the end credits) did "what are little girls made of", which sounds strong and menacing.

I love the battle music, I think it's part of the Corbomite Maneuver tune. Anytime Kirk or Spock had to do battle by hand to hand, I love the music in the background. Years ago, I found somewhere a bunch of the Orginal Series long lists of the many famous background music but the sound was low pitch and very hard to hear. The problem with the other TOS music is that they only play from one epilog. Not the entire series.

    They got canceled for being so violent. I remember when the Christians wanted to protest against the commercials, shows, or networks. If the studios or Producers didn't reduce the violence or take the shows off the air. The Wild Wild West, Batman, and other TV shows had a short life span due to the violence and storylines as people made loud noise to Hollywood. Not so violent compared to the (l.o.l.) violence on some TV shows of today, I was about 7 years of age when these shows had their short-lived lives. Classic Shows that will live on forever.
