Personally, I love the styling of the XJ even from the back. Nothing else in this class, has such beautiful lines. Hated the blacked out C-pillar when it was launched, and still think the air vents look like gargoyles in the dashboard, but apart from those minute details, I love the XJ.
I agree on the vents, they're a bit in your face and I think they're the only thing that lets the styling down a little. I much prefer the revolving vents on the XF.
I went to a JLR dealer in Preston a few years a go with my brother who owned a XF, he went to get it serviced. I love Range Rovers so happily sat in them on the showroom floor and unfortunately was not impressed at all. So, I walked through the glass doors to the Jaguar showroom and looked at this beautiful car called the XJ! I got in and settled into the most comfortable, well fitting machine and fell in love. I did not want to get out! My brother came looking for me and I was in dream mode in 'my' XJ. It was beautiful! It is beautiful and I went off Range Rovers there and then.
Funny how a similar thing happened with me. Visited the JLR dealership with a family member to see about the possibility of buying a RR Sport but we both walked out loving the XJR575. Beautiful looking machine, incredibly comfortable and a crazy amount of power for a 4 door saloon at the time. They looked so much cooler than the german counterparts.
I had the good fortune to own a Supersport for a while, and it was simply epic. Better-equipped than the R, slightly more pliant ride, slightly more subtle appearance. The looks grew on me more and more over time. Every journey was an occasion and the engine was perfectly happy either cruising gently or ripping your face off. We took it on a tour to Scotland and it was fabulous both at eating distances and blasting down twisty roads with the astonishing engine at full roar. I can confirm getting solidly into the 30s mpg on a long run, or about 5mpg in traffic. Don't sit in traffic. I think this car is a classic and I miss mine every day.

Yes, I have driven an XJ. It was sublime. It was some years ago now, but I feel an S8 was close. Both were on aluminium chassis. The XJ was nicer to steer around corners, though.
Such a unique and involving, large and very driver centric car. You're right that it was undervalued while it was new. Looks like people are belatedly wise-ing up !!
I'm lucky enough to be driving a XJR-575. Think I've a future classic on my hands here. It is as Jay says a great all rounder. More than happy to keep it. Best bit is surprising other 'sports' cars that think its a slow diesel. Errr nope!!! Cya!
I have to say, you're the only person I've ever heard of anywhere that doesn't like the styling. I think it's superb. I didn't even know what a floating roof was supposed to be anyway, but once you get in you won't care much what it looks like on the outside anyway. I'd love one, but my 2009 XF is as much as I can afford. That's fine because I'm totally happy with it and it's been completely reliable in the 7 years I've had it.
Honestly what you describe is just so familiar to my XE S, had the V6 and i would casually get 40MPG consistently as the engine would stick at 650 RPM crusing and i just wouldnt use the power, I was even 27 when i got mine and it was a similar story, ex staff owned it AFAIK I just love this generation of jags, These days i just feel "if something went wrong though" they are a reliable car overall, but it does require attention like a luxury car of course, and overall i just want less tech, to the point where im considering getting another one, just to have a specialist strip all the gadgets down and it not be fussed that its missing 80% of the features that it comes with as standard ha.
@@CandyMan2001 Funny story there as when i had the XE S i was sold on that more than the RCF that i was looking at they were about the same price at the time but whilst the engine was lovely, it didnt feel as good as i expected it to, mind you the XE S i got was one where the previous owner ticked all the options except privacy glass and the heated steering wheel and i found that fantastic. Personally im still looking at the oddity of the RC 200t as i eye it up as "not so fast luxury coupe" i have the feeling there is a lot more to that car, and its not the easiest car to source a decent one for a price im willing to pay.
@@A-world-of-My-Own Trouble is it's what sells cars, so you can't really have a luxury brand that doesn't have the gadgets in that you'd find as standard in the average Nissan or Kia. Most of the complaints in the reviews of the XF seemed to be that the interior was dated, and that was mostly aimed at the infotainment system. I'm not a fan of the newer design trend of a large touchscreen that looks as though it's been stuck on as an afterthought, I loved the earlier XF because it was built into the dash, but the latest one has the "floating" screen to accommodate the size of it. Just spoils the whole dash for me.
I am the very happy owner of a 2014 XJ Portfolio 3ltr diesel. An incredible car that is luxurios, refined, powerful and economical. In four years of ownership it has cost me a replacement battery (small stop start battery), rear brake pads and two rear tyres. It is a joy to drive and own, but, I would swop it for the beast that is the XJR!
I wish they had made a 4wd estate with this supercharged engine, i need those extra features. Lovely car I've driven many jags and had a few at home. I drove XJR supercharged from 1999ish, and the XKR too. The latter is FAR better balanced. But I fish and shoot and drive down farm tracks and snow and mud, hence the 4x4 need
I had thought that the XFR-S Sportbrake was 4WD but I just checked and it's RWD. There were some 4WD XF models available, maybe with just the V6 or I4.
Funny enough, the closest Jaguar Estate to what you want is the X-Type AWD Estate with the 3.0 V6. If you want AWD, practicality and the 5.0 V8, there's the RR Velar SVO and RR Sport SVR
Try the f Pace SVR. Not an estate, but I love mine. Great carrying capacity, sports car performance. The suspension doesn't smooth out bumpy roads like my XJ did, but it's not bad really. Also I have managed 31 mpg on a long run.
Tragedy they stopped making this beautiful car. I owned and XF for years and loved it. Totally reliable. Wanted to buy the XJ but they had stopped making them. So bought an F Pace SVR instead. What a machine same engine 550bhp 700nm of torque and really butch looks. So Jag haven’t quite lost it yet! So glad that useless French CEO has gone. They need a proper CEO with a handle bar moustache, that used to fly Spitfires to make them properly Jag again! Oh yes and put a real engine in that ipace.
Always wanted a Jag as remember going out in my parents XJ12 years ago and loving it, so when an XJR came up in the right spec (British Racing Green) I p/x my Mercedes E43 AMG for an XJR- and very pleased I did! Total Jag convert. Love the styling, comfort, sound, ride, luxury interior and effortless power, only downside is high fuel consumption. Seeing as you pick them up for £25-30k now- it’s an incredible amount of car for the price. Cannot recommend one enough.
That opening shot when you're coming over the hill genuinely looked like a pouncing jaguar haha. awesome shot. I would rock this car if I could for sure!
Have an XFR with a pulley and map which makes a bit more power than this XJR! It's a phenomenal powertrain for sure. Absolute joy to drive, and a pleasure to sit in. But despite being one of the more reliable jags, there are still a plethora of issues that can cost you a couple of grand at any point, which along with the tax and fuel cost doesn't make for a comforting ownership experience.
Hi James. Lately, I’ve found myself drawn to your reviews of all different types of cars and something I like is that your delivery and reasoning reminds me of James May’s. Reviews are always pleasant…. Keep it up
This video most certainly caught my eye today. I was at work when it popped up. So having got back home, KFC in hand I sat down to watch your video. So thanks to this video in particular, the older I get, the more a Jaguar catches my attention. I was also lucky when I was much younger. I got the chance to drive my dad’s Jaguar’s. Both 4.2 Jaguar XJ’s. So I do remember how those felt. Even at speed that were like a red carpet. Anyway, great video. I’m looking on eBay & Autotrader now 😉
The 2010-2019 is the only full sized sedan I could truly see myself owning. It’s gorgeous from all angles, sporty, still comfortable and had specs that did not make it feel like an old personas car.
Used to own a black on black 350 Jaguar XJR, now drive a black on black 351 Jaguar XJR575. Both special, but at some point the previous one started to feel a bit fuddy-duddy. Ian Callum knew what he was doing. The 575 is a fantastic driving machine, with a somewhat different mix of Jaguar's "Grace, Space and Pace" mantra. Re styling, it looks perfect in black - menacing, athletic and modern. I agree it becomes somewhat bulbous and the blackened rear quarter may be jarring in lighter colors. So... buy BLACK! ;)
Great review of a great car. I sold my XJL last July and truly regret it, It was a car that made an occasion of every drive and when you parked it and looked back always brought a smile and sense of pride.I think i will get another one, shame that they have stopped producing them. Jaguar dealers where a rip off when servicing, charging silly money for a car that was so easy to service at home. (But no service stamp that goes against selling on price)
"But I must be getting old because I think it actually looks a little bit better in wood" Hahaahah Fantastic :) This Jaguar is a Fantastic place to be and is the best XJ ever!
I've always loved XJ's of any kind. Sure, quality and reliabilty may not be their stronghold, but my god are those way prettier than any of its german counterparts.
Reliability issues are hugely overexaggerated. Ford did a great job of ensuring reliability since they stepped in. I own an XJ308 which I have driven for 250K now. Including previous owners, it is now well above 400K. And sure, it needs taking good care of, but so would a Mercedes or BMW of this age and maturity. And neither of these cars makes you forget you are in a car. An XJ makes you feel like you would with a friend.
@@willemjanhilderink4271 I second this. It's only people who haven't driven these cars, or tried to cheap out on the maintenance a car needs, who say they are unreliable.
I had a X350 which I loved. I believe that was the last of the 'proper' Jags, they have to have walnut in abundance for me. My love of Jaguars died through it's woeful dealer network. I moved on to Lexus who were night and day above Jaguar in their treatment of customers. I never knew about this facelift model, it does look better, but still not my taste. Great video.
There's a massive network of Jag specialists that have the best customer care I've experienced, and I used to own a Lexus and had it main dealer serviced.
I just purchased a 2011 Model to replace the 2015 I had 3 years ago I lost it.. Literally drove from Michigan to Chicago to pay for it to keep other buyers from taking it from me tired as hell but proud of my purchase going to Chicago Saturday morning and bringing it back to Michigan
I've been driving 45 years. My current car from brand new a 2018 model Jaguar XJ Autobiography 3.0. Best car I have ever owned. LWB ultimate luxury being the flagship XJ X351 model. I will not sell it. So economical, and way enough power. The Autobiography is far better in my opinion then the XJR last model version.
Magnificent Car! I has always bemused me why this didn’t sell in huge numbers during its life. I am also one who has to disagree with you, Sir. I love the rear angle of this beautiful car.
I have a 575, I hit the magical 40mpg too on a long motorway run. It was the worst purchasing experience of my life including the dealer having crashed it, doing a bad job covering that up, and reselling it with year old photos. It was a main JLR dealer. I nearly rejected it and only stuck with it and had everything sorted out because finding them in metallic green is impossible. I only found out about the damage, which they never admitted and got very defensive about, when I went to pick up the missing headrest from the previous owner whose paperwork theyd accidentally left in the car.
A note, not a criticism, why do so many of us Petrolheads go looking for corners and then straighten them out, unless you are doing this to aid visisbility, then try using upur own side of the road, its more curvy and more fun, also sometimes it is safer. Great review, keep up the good work, have been watching yoj for years.
I just bought an 2014 last year with only 39,100 miles on it, all I love it. A very beautiful car, from the front to the back! I love that it's a smooth driving car, but can be a violent and aggressive car otherwise! It's a shame they stop making this flagship!
I have the XJLR 2017 and I love it. And it was my first car ever because I have always had Chevy Tahoe's. If you are able to get one of these in good to great condition I highly recommend.
My dream car would be this engine (and any other good bits) put into the much more beautiful yet also agressive and gangster X350 XJR in black with chrome bits. I dont mind the looks of these but they're not even close to being as good looking as the previous model. I'd give that lovely supercharged 5ltr V8 a tune for 600bhp too. This would then make my absolute ultimate family car. I'd have plenty of space for my 3 kids and such a classy looking inside n out perfect motor! Heaven! All i need to do now is buy the car, the engine, get the engine fitted and all set up properly, I'd need the better brakes all round too. So i need a lottery win ASAP, that'd help with the roadtax, insurance and fuel and running costs and...........
My X350 is at 180,000 miles and I love it to bits, however I suppose one day it's going to fail dramatically. As I'm soon to be inside ULEZ I could either replace it with a petrol X350 (probably the V6) or maybe a late Euro 6 compliant X351 3.0 diesel. Hmm
Funny thing is. That the same Jag is already for sale on Autotrader. Curious why. I have x351 with 3.0L Diesel and would love to have the V8 version. Diesel is great and fast, but V8 is the way to go.
Ian fixed everything with the Jaguar XF estate. Similar space as the standard wheelbase. More cargo apace. Immensely better styling. A decade ago the X-type estate could be had for peanuts. The estate now five years old is holding its value better than anything in JLR's line up, including F-types, at least in the states.
I have a xjr 2016 since November last year and love it, can’t see my changing for some time. Before this I have a xj portfolio 2015 v6 diesel but unfortunately after 6 weeks of ownership the crank snapped, new engine needed. Fortunately dealer reimbursed me which is why I went for the v8 monster.
If you can keep the thing from overheating, due to the plastic coolant parts, and maintain it properly. That can be a lovely car to own and drive. That's a proper Jag and it is the last one we will ever get.
Was chauffeur driven in one on the way to pick up a nice Italian super car a few years back. Suffice to say I got out very impressed. It’s the only one I was impressed with
The XJR is an awesome car but can also be compared to the Audi S8 or S8 Plus from a similar era which at around 5m40s was missed out. Great video, makes me want to get out Jag back 😅
I owned a 2005 XJR for 8 years. Around 400 horsepower and torque was plenty. That car IMO was the most beautiful sedan ever made, period end of story. It handled impeccably, and was more comfortable to cover long distances in than any other vehicle I've ever experienced. The front seats were particularly perfect. The X351 looks like a Buick infected Jaguar's design language. If I had my druthers, I'd buy a 2008 XJR, the last year for X350, and have the motor upgraded with performance tuning, smaller supercharger pulley, and intake improvements. That would be a forever car.
@@andykay6230 Used to own the 350 XJR, now drive the XJR575, both black on black. Both are excellent Jags, but at some point the 350 started to feel fuddy-duddy. Ian Callum knew what he was doing.
@@michalwysoki9433 I think the x351 will grow on people, much as the x350 did. The x351 is undoubtedly the faster better car but is that everything? Somehow the latter cars seem to have lost something of their DNA, something of their soul.
That exhaust...😩😮💨 Gonna look into getting mine modified. I've heard 3.0 V6 Diesels straight piped and they sound brilliant. I'd be interested to hear one that's still legal but fun.
Thank you for a wonderful review. In my younger days I loved the XJ , yet the later exterior styling was just too Ford Taurus-ish to appeal to me. Perhaps if I still had kids at home I might be a bit more enthusiastic. I'd MUCH rather have the XKR.
These are on my list of cars that I want to experience. I've always loved the look of these things, and the Supercharged version is the only option for purchase
I was fortunate enough to own a 2013 xjr and it is still my favourite car that I've ever owned. I px'd it for an XKRS which is far more dramatic but I still prefer the xjr and will have another at some point!
I've just bought an XJ ULTIMATE recently. Loving it so far but having to fix a few bits. It's a nightmare getting spares from Jag, a significant amount of them are out of stock, on indefinite backorder. There are some good independants out there inc SNG Barrett, Britishparts, justjags and Berkshire Jags who sell quality oem and aftermarket stuff, but with Jaguars move to EV (and the fact X351 were during Ford ownership) I wouldn't count on getting gen Jag parts at all...

Yes, I have driven an XJ. It was sublime. It was some years ago now, but I feel an S8 was close. Both were on aluminium chassis. The XJ was nicer to steer around corners, though.
Without watching it, this is exactly the type of car I was going to suggest instead of a cayenne turbo for you James, a powerful jag saloon 👌
Such a unique and involving, large and very driver centric car. You're right that it was undervalued while it was new. Looks like people are belatedly wise-ing up !!
Forget expensive in car entertainment. Just listen to that soundtrack, wherever you go. Worth every penny. 😊
I'm lucky enough to be driving a XJR-575. Think I've a future classic on my hands here. It is as Jay says a great all rounder. More than happy to keep it. Best bit is surprising other 'sports' cars that think its a slow diesel. Errr nope!!! Cya!
Very rare car
It's a beauty - the rear lights are very Facel Vega-esque and let's be honest the Facel Vega is an absolute beauty - just like the XJ.
100% great cars but with too much crap.( I own 4 of them)
@@CandyMan2001 Funny story there as when i had the XE S i was sold on that more than the RCF that i was looking at they were about the same price at the time but whilst the engine was lovely, it didnt feel as good as i expected it to, mind you the XE S i got was one where the previous owner ticked all the options except privacy glass and the heated steering wheel and i found that fantastic.
I have this same engine in my XKR, but somehow it always sounded meatier in the XJ.
Lovely car
I've driven many jags and had a few at home.
@@yeshwantdasari2075
Audi all road?
Try the f Pace SVR. Not an estate, but I love mine. Great carrying capacity, sports car performance. The suspension doesn't smooth out bumpy roads like my XJ did, but it's not bad really. Also I have managed 31 mpg on a long run.
Great car, one of the best interiors ever
I've got 2014 XJR and absolutely love it . Had 575 map done the thing is amazing in race mode.
Trouble free?
@@C63Bez yes it's been great. It does love a set of tyres 😨😄
Did you have the limiter removed from 174mph to 186mph?
@@bigwerve the limiter is completely removed.
Is it a 200mph car ? I picked mine up today and it is really fast
16:45 There it is, I was wondering when we were gonna hear it.
❤ my Jags! Thanks for featuring!
I greatly prefer the x350 and the more distinctive look that instantly said “Jaguar.”
I’m looking on eBay & Autotrader now 😉
I have had my xjr for the past 5 years and love it. It won’t take your comments about it’s looks seriously…given your dress sense..😮😂
So... buy BLACK! ;)
The Audi S8 was essentially an RS model without the associated badging, it was built in the same plant as other RS models and had the power.
Styling is amazing to my eye.
I always think about Ride Along 2 whenever this Jag comes up
Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺. The rear styling of this car is awesome 👌 it's just you... .love your videos.
Ironically these had pretty bulletproof engines and decent reliability and quality
@@kennyd7667
And looked like a dog's dinner, unlike the beauties of yesterday.
@@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X Still better than de long wheelbase a class that pretends to be an S-class or the XM.
@@willemjanhilderink4271
I second this.
Lexus is wonderful but soulless. Jaguar shines in the character & passion department ...
@@f-u-nkyf-u-ntime yep, don't know why you'd go to the Stealers once the warranty is up...?
I just purchased a 2011 Model to replace the 2015 I had 3 years ago I lost it.. Literally drove from Michigan to Chicago to pay for it to keep other buyers from taking it from me tired as hell but proud of my purchase going to Chicago Saturday morning and bringing it back to Michigan
"Its jumping into the past not the future", sounds like marketing babble to me. You are right that it should be a face on jaguar though
Never been in a Jag before, but i love these XJ's
Magnificent Car! I has always bemused me why this didn’t sell in huge numbers during its life. I am also one who has to disagree with you, Sir. I love the rear angle of this beautiful car.
In black the x351 is my favorite big sedan and I consider it a style icon
I love the overall design, elegant with a bit of brutishness, sounds great too!!
I had an XJR 575, 1 of 80, I regret selling it every second of every day.
Yes. Keeping mine. Was it 1 of 80 in the UK?
Honestly one of the best bargain cars out there
I have a 575, I hit the magical 40mpg too on a long motorway run.
James thanks for a great video on a very interesting XJR a truly remarkable car,I am very impressed 👏 😀 👍
Epic styling from the outside they nail it with this model.
Oh yes, Jag XJ with unreasonable amounts of power. My favourite type of Jag.
Now as a jag owner already this is something i would definitely have.
I like this Jaguar Design the most after the older XJ V12 Coupè for some reasons I can`t explain.
I’ve Loved Jag’s since My Dad’s
XK140!!!!
Thanks J, always good to see this Jag type on the channel! 🙏🙏
That V8 sound is truly wonderful
It’s the only one I was impressed with
I have an FX S in the same colour and with the same colour code interior. I love it.
The XJR is an awesome car but can also be compared to the Audi S8 or S8 Plus from a similar era which at around 5m40s was missed out.
Great video, makes me want to get out Jag back 😅
I love that Jay's idea of "doing the sensible thing" is buying an XJR!😅
He and I have different ideas of sensible. Good on you though Jay.
Couldn't agree more. I have a 2007 XJR its got more than enough power and torque and actually looks like a Jaguar!
That exhaust...😩😮💨
Gonna look into getting mine modified. I've heard 3.0 V6 Diesels straight piped and they sound brilliant. I'd be interested to hear one that's still legal but fun.
I think you can do a back box delete. On the V8’s they sound mega!
Thank you for a wonderful review. In my younger days I loved the XJ , yet the later exterior styling was just too Ford Taurus-ish to appeal to me. Perhaps if I still had kids at home I might be a bit more enthusiastic. I'd MUCH rather have the XKR.

The rear clusters were designed to imitate the Jaguar's claws.

Nice Try!
Oh yeh that was the marketing spiel then

The rear to me is the money shot
I've just bought an XJ ULTIMATE recently. Loving it so far but having to fix a few bits. It's a nightmare getting spares from Jag, a significant amount of them are out of stock, on indefinite backorder. There are some good independants out there inc SNG Barrett, Britishparts, justjags and Berkshire Jags who sell quality oem and aftermarket stuff, but with Jaguars move to EV (and the fact X351 were during Ford ownership) I wouldn't count on getting gen Jag parts at all...
