This is a beautiful lace stitch that’s created by a yarn over and a decrease. It’s just a one row repeat!
This stitch lays flat and is reversible. Like most lace stitches, it has some stretch to it.
Purse Stitch would look great knit into a breezy tote bag or a wide scarf or a shawl. I can also imagine it knit into a blanket with chunky yarn!

@@sheepandstitch At 5:31 you'll see how the starting stitch looks, which is how mine does. But the example at the start of the video has a really nice/clean border. Are there any tutorials to explain how this was done? This is the first more complicated stitch I've tried so I'm not sure how to add a border or any fancy bind offs. Thanks!

Newb question: since purl is the opposite side of a knit stitch, couldn't you do k1 *YO, K2tog across the row?

If you miss a yarn over and don't catch it until later is there a way fix that without undoing a whole row?
Lace knitting is tough in that it’s very hard to fix mistakes without messing up the look of the stitch. I would advise using lifelines when you first start knitting this stitch so you can rip back to the lifeline if you make a mistake. @@sheepandstitch I saw your video about lifelines and found it far too hard to stick the knitting needle through the knitted work. My eyes got confused even after blinking, and the needle didn't go straight! What somebody else showed me was to put a piece of scrap yarn at important stages of the work through the stitches that are still on the needle, much much easier!
Can you do this with super bulky yarn?
Yes absolutely! Just use larger needles to match the yarn

No it’s just one yarn over. The the yarn needs to be up front when you purl, so after the yarn over you bring the yarn up front. That’s why it may look like a yarn over but it’s just a purl stitch. Hope that makes sense
@@sheepandstitch In the video, after the purl stitch you take the yarn to the back to "tug it tight" before bringing the yarn to the front and do the yarn over. Maybe that is what looks like a double yarn over? I'm an avid knitter and this movement confused me at first as well.
@@FeatnikSF hey there ☺️ so here's my understanding. The yarn over (increase) + P2tog (decrease) will give you the lace effect while maintaining stitch count. So it's a yarnover + purl. The purl itself consist of a yarn over technically. So it appears as though we are yarning over twice..which we are..but the second yarn over is a part of the purl stitch itself. To add, the repeat is the yo, P2tog so it looks like we will be yarning over back to back but that's the pattern. treat is as two separate steps to avoid a mix up...I hope this helps!
I can imagine using the purse stitch for my first cardigan.. or maybe to cover a purse!
@@sheepandstitch thank you for a lovely and simple lace stitch. however it would have been better if your instruction was written as "p1, yrn (yarn round the needle), p2tog". The "yrn" automatically brings the yarn over the needle and back to the front ready for the next p2tog stitch.
My only issue is that I can’t get the needle though both stitches
Leeme be honest here, istg this is not beginner friendly at all! This is SOO confusing bruh!! She’s way to fastttttt. Even tho I was watching this in the slowest speed, it wasn’t still enough for me to catch on. (L tutorial!)
This is actually very beginner friendly. She is explaining the stitches well and is going pretty slow. Not to mention she is explaining what she’s doing for pretty much the entire row. It’s probably just you, all the other comments I have seen say that this is a good tutorial. People learn in different ways, try a different channel or search how to do the stitches shown in the video. I have been knitting for an hour and found this video extremely clear and slow. If you don’t like the video or tutorial, just watch a different one without commenting.
