    Excellent videos and a great help to all tin whistle players old and young, The best tip I have gleaned from your videos is not to blow too hard into the whistle. It may sound crazy but I have played the whistle for a decade and always blow too hard into the instrument. My playing sounds better now, thank you

    I love this! Once I have practiced until I'm weary, playing like this is great fun! Thank so very much for posting this! I especially liked guessing the notes at the end of the video!

    Another tip: Find the key of the song you are playing and practice to look for the range of notes you need in order to play the song. Some songs have notes that are lower than the lowest note on the tin whistle or higher than the highest note on the whistle, so you may need to change octaves to accomodate for those notes. Great video!

    • @TheNaraku32
      @TheNaraku32 4 года назад

      I can play a tune in other octave or even in other key, but the main problem is a finding of an initial note, if I find it the rest will be easy to recognize and play (if the melody isn't so difficult) =)

    I'd like to add there are also a lot of C Soprano recorder videos that you can play on a D whistle to play along and also learn to read simple sheet music.

    0:40 We'll have to respectfully agree to disagree on that one CutiePie. Reading sheet music, for me anyway, is much easier than reading tabs. Besides, having the sheet music in the treble clef, I'm able to play that same sheet music on all my other treble clef instruments.
    BTW: I appreciate you supplying the sheet music in lieu of taps with “The Last of the Mohicans.” With the sheet music I’m able to play “The Last of the Mohicans,” for example, also on my concertina, ukulele, violin and recorder. 😉 🎼 ♫

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  5 лет назад +2

      Haha, yes, perhaps! Nothing wrong with disagreeing though :)
      A lot of people find sheet music easier, I think it depends a lot on the individual's experience with music and the abilities of the ear :) If you personally find it easy to remember how a tune sounds, where to add ornaments and how long to hold each note then tabs are really all you need, but for those who find it easy to remember what certain symbols mean, sheet music is perfect! I guess it's the difference between visual and auditory learners?
      Reading sheet music is great, and ideal for playing other instruments too - but it's only great if you know how to read sheet music :D haha. It's something you have to spend time learning to do (a commodity that isn't always readily available). You need to learn what each note means, the length to hold each note, the position on the line and how that relates to where you put your fingers on your instrument, the way it's joined to other notes, the way in which notes should be attacked or glided into - it's comprehensive and detailed, ideal for playing perfectly, but it's not something that you can do in a day. It takes time and effort to learn and is a slow process.
      Tabs on the other hand just show you exactly where your fingers need to go in order to play the note you need to play - so they don't require time to learn to understand. Granted, you're not going to be playing everything EXACTLY right, but if you've got an idea of how the tune sounds, you can pick up a whistle and play the song immediately, which is why they're so appealing to many beginners. That's why they're easier for me.
      Sheet music is always going to be the ideal way to play music, but at the same time, if you play multiple keys of whistle, you need to know where every note is on every whistle you own to follow the sheet music - which is a lot more information to keep track of than a diagram that just shows you where to put your fingers. I've heard most people learn to play from sheet on D and then switch key - is that how you do it? :)

      @@CutiepieTinWhistle Hi CutiePie - Wow! You are amazing in going that extra mile! Your first eight words would’ve sufficed. I agree with everything you wrote.
      As you said not everyone reads music. As for me, I only read music in the treble (G) clef. I play multiple instruments but only in the treble clef. Being that I already read music, the only thing I need to know when learning a new treble clef instrument is the fingering chart and embouchure (be it for a wind or brass instrument).
      To answer your question: Yes, I first learn to play songs from sheet music. As for the tin whistle mine plays in only two keys: G and D. All my other instruments are chromatic with the exception of my diatonic Romanian alto pan flute in the key of C, and my diatonic harmonicas.
      The only instruments I play strictly by ear are the diatonic harmonic and chromatic slide whistle, and more times than not I’ll play the pan flute by ear.
      BTW: The only instrument I play with tabs is my pentatonic Native American flute in the key of G minor. So when you play your Native American flute, I do ever so much appreciate those tabs. 😉
      Which reminds me, when you are going to name that tune: ruclips.net/video/8JGbnfxFJYg/видео.html

    Hi Q T Pie, Gr8 channel, have you come across the old blind harper 'O' Carolan, some of his tunes are amazing for whistle and might help people x the bridge to older trad tunes. The best rendition I have heard is by Mark Robson on the album A Celtic dreaming, I have listened to his music for years for inspiration and guested with him & friends a few times! Look for Kangaroo Moon on youtube for a treat but check out their official web site to get hold of their better produced material and Mark's solo albums. Producing tab for his whistle playing will keep you busy, have fun! Also some fun videos on a channel called Mojo Risin for a band called the space Goats are well worth a look.
    The Kinks classics are having a revival as well, tab for their stuff would go down a treat I think!
    Have fun Chris

    Hi Stephanie! Lovely video, I only have one “problem” with this technique. I started learning the flute when I was a kid so I already know all the nursery rhymes and easy songs by heart because they were used to teach me how to read music. Any idea on what I could start with instead? Thanks

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  6 лет назад

      Pick any song you already know in your head - something popular you always sing along to when you hear it - could be anything really, whatever you're in to. If you already know a few songs by heart it should be easier to get started anyway, as you know your instrument well, and the sounds it plays :)

      bikramjeet dhar I just listen to a tune I like (or one someone suggests) then play it back and write the notes/tabs out 😊 that's the way I learn and I enjoy it. It means I can play any song and don't have to rely on finding the music for it either 🤣 haha. I'd love to read sheet music better than I do, but I haven't ever found the time to sit there and learn to read it quickly. I'd rather just play, so I do 😊

      Look for books or videos covering music theory 😊 you should be able to learn which notes create chords and harmonies then be able to apply that to any song.
