I was reading another forum article on this rework and he was saying much the same, with similar experiences. He did say that of the various types of 6005 bearing available he went for the 6005ZZ. The metal sealed ones would stand the cylinder head temps whereas the rubber seals may not. He also suggested removing the metal shield from one side for bearing lubrication but to keep the outer seal in place. his reasoning was that it would prevent head oil draining away when parked on the side stand.
Worked great, The only thing I did different Was clean the grease from the bearings and replace it with engine assembly lube so the oil passages didn't get clogged with grease.
This is a REALLY useful video with all the bolt sizes and bearing information included. Thank you for taking time to put all this together, you've helped out a lot of people.
Thanks for the information! Although I don't own one of these motorcycles, this engine is identical to the one in my Yamaha timberwolf. I had an issue with the cam bolt backing out and the gear fell of and tore up the end of the camshaft. In finding a new cam I found it shares a cam with this bike which I could get much cheaper. I also came across this video and considered the upgrade. When I removed the bushing off the old camshaft I found it had uneven wear, and that's what made me decide to find this video again and find the bearing you suggested. I can't wait to get these parts on order and get this fourwheeler up and running!
So the top end is pretty much identical to my Timberwolf 250 motor and i've been looking for a way to pull the camshaft out for maybe two weeks and I never considered using your method. Good idea frl really helped me out haha.
Incredible job and upgrade-well done man and thanks. You make what I wouldn't dream of doing look possible. A big thank you also for the wrong oil filters video.
I had a family member drop off their very neglected XT225 last week. Only 13k on the motor, but not much works on the bike. Winter project for next years fun. Thanks for this video, I will have to consider this since I have to reseal the motor, leaks like a sieve.
Nice one, Alex. Just wasted an hour trying to pull out the darn cam without a puller. The way the cam was flopping around in there, I'm pretty sure the cam journals are toast.
That new ball race went in a little too easily for my liking. I think I would have used some Loctite Bearing fit just to make sure the bearing didn’t start creeping when in use. Nevertheless, great video, thanks for sharing.
I think you would want TDC on the compression stroke? I’m thinking an unsealed bearing would be best. There would still be residual oil in the bottom portion of the outer race when shut off?
Very informative video. I just wonder if the aluminum bushing was designed in part to direct the oil flow where needed vs the bearing which may starve parts for oil?
There is an oil supply hole in the cam that supplies oil to the bushing. The bearing covers up that hole, which forces that oil to other areas like the other bearing and the cam lobes. That is the way I was thinking anyway. I have since sold this bike but it ran fine for 1000 miles before I did.
Hey Alex, great video! My XT filter checked out fine, and engine still runs, but with lots of "piston slap" noise. I adjusted valves to spec, and they weren't far off. The bad; when I turn my crankshaft manually with a wrench, it makes a very audible metal friction sound throughout the strokes. Any thoughts before I take it into a local mechanic? Is a top end rebuild within a beginners ability and worth the $ for an XT? 10kmiles btw. Thanks again!
Great video and thanks for posting. I made the same mistake this week with the wrong oil filter. The bike started chirping and then locked. It runs now (with the proper filter) but I've been told to do this. Are you fairly sure only the bearing is needed ? Thanks in advance.
I think so. It's not hard to do but you will have metal shavings to clean up too probably. I did not need to replace the cam when my other bike seized, I just cleaned it up with some scotchbrite.
Did the bearing last? I got a moto 4 with the cam bushing worn out was thinking about using the bearing just like to know if it would last a while before I do replace it with a bearing.thanks.
Buen día, tuviste que hacer un desgaste en el extremo interno para poner un rodamiento allí adentro también ? O que número de rodamiento usaste para que entre ?
There are a few advantages. I think the ball bearing will last much longer between failures because a journal type bearing requires some oil pressure to work and the design of this engine, with holes at the cam lobes, does not provide oil pressure to the chain side bearing. A ball bearing does not need oil pressure, just some oil now and then. This is my understanding of how these types of bearings work. Also the stock part costs $60 to replace while the ball bearing costs $5, so once seized the ball bearing is the cheaper choice too.
I have converted two bikes. The first one I bought seized up so I didn't hear it run. The second one I converted is the one in the video and it's bushing was fine so the bike sounded normal.
Wr250 fits an xt250- paper element. TW200, xt225, ttr225 and 230- same thing- all have a fine mesh metal filter with a special oil hole. Did you watch the beginning of the video? And in my opinion those ball bearings would not hold proper oil pressure
hola, tengo una xt225 mod 2005, veo que decis que te quedo grande el ruleman y tengo en mente hacer este cambio, le instalaste el 6005 ?, o cual le colocaste ?, gracias.
@@chamindaperera3257 it isn't that hard to take it out and inspect it but if you can wiggle it around that isn't good. Be sure to set those valve clearances after you make any changes.

Interesting mod.
Can I ask how the new bearing held up over time?
Just did to two ttr230 worked great same bearing fit. Was surprised to see both aluminum bushings I removed had wear on them.
what cam bearing did you use to your ttr 230f and size may i see your upgrade?
I used the wrong oil filter on my wifes 230.... feel so stupid. Now researching engine stuff. Thanks for the video!
Hopefully you can fix it like I was able to, and it's an upgrade.

Bom dia, estamos colocando rolamentos nas duas pontas desse eixo, melhora o desempenho e acaba com o barulho

Fiz na minha XT 225 por ocasião de uma troca de embreagem.
Pedi para colocar rolamento nós dois lados
Does enough oil fly around to lube the bearing?
I just found this... excellent. thx
I can not even press down both rocker arms without a pry bar. Any suggestions? camshaft seized, replaced it, both times can not push them down.
Did it hold up well?
Great job Alex
This was an amazingly helpful video!! Did you happen to keep your old aluminum bearing?
I'm here to help. No, it got trashed. You could see visible wear on it.
So far so good? How's it working for you?
Chad Dickerson no problems yet. Only had it on two rides though.

Just did this last week to a ‘97.
Gonna do it to my 97 this weekend
Stock Junkee84 put the bearing in the freezer for about an hour, it’ll help install
looking on eBay/ i see the bearing mite be 25x47x12mm ?
Well done!

Que tal el funcionamiento con ese cambio.

Thanks, thanks.

Still going strong, 1000 miles later
Whats the advantage of swapping to ball bearing?
