Yoshi's Island have 60 levels considering extra and secret levels.
In fact, extra levels are unlocked when you get at least 800 total points on the other levels in the world. On SNES that means getting 100 % on all the other levels, but on the GBA, if you beat 6-8 you'll get the six GBA exclusive Secret levels which will allow you to unlock the extra levels even without getting 100 % on all others, as any points you've missed on the others can be added by beating the secret level with enough points to make up for that.
This is one of the first ROR videos, but the absolute oldest of all, the ROR on SMB1 (NES vs GBC), while it’s not one of the most poorly-aged videos we’ve seen, its biggest problem that makes it show its age is a “Yeah, I said it!” yell to the people that aren’t fans of a New Super Mario Bros. sequel, as if it were an underrated gem, when there are far better Mario games, even Super Mario Bros. 1 (NES/SNES/GBC/GBA/VC). But credit where credit is due, it’s ironically funny. So the problem is pretty minor, meaning it’s a nitpick and not like Fawful’s Minion when he demonized the hatedoms of over-praised Sonic games like Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces in his remade video of greatest Sonic games.
Since you like to find differences in games and their remakes, it might interest you to know that the countdown timer ticks down considerably faster on the SNES version.
There were a lot of differences he didn't mention at all, which I found surprising given what I expected this video to be about. Here are some examples: - World 4-4 doesn't have that middle ring after the first section in the SNES version (similarly in 5-7 there is one less middle ring in the SNES version) - In the SNES version, once you get the key and enter the locked doors with the bonus battle (vs. Bandit), you cannot re-enter until you replay the level (whereas in the GBA version you can re-enter the door to faceoff with Bandit as many times as you want - this is how it should've been originally imo) - The level select map is very different - The world score (i.e. 8:49 in the video) is not present at all in the SNES version - Some levels have different designs - Glitches were patched from the SNES original which allowed you to carry giant eggs to other levels or glitching out the screen by throwing an egg at a message block - Some graphics have been altered (such as the tape "X" on sealed doors)
0:24 Man, all this time I didn’t realize that Yoshi’s Island on the GBA doesn’t include the, “Super Mario World 2” part of the title. But can you imagine how awful that would sound? “Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3” It’s actually worse than, “Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3”!
***** Well I remember plenty of people criticizing how the DS version kinda neuters the controls because Nintendo replaced the analog controls with a D-pad and a run button ( the stylus controls aren't much better either), which honestly doesn't come close to analog control. Even on the 3DS you're still limited to the 8 directions that were programmed. Also the button layout makes pulling off certain moves in the original alot harder because know you need to perform tricks while simultaneously holding the run button. Now for me and others, a remake that messes up the controls to that degree can't redeem itself to be better regardless of the content. Now that's not to say the DS version doesn't have it's upsides, the camera's much better and the graphical facelift is pretty impressive for the DS ( but they honestly a bit look too pixelated and jagged ), but those changes really don't compensate for the controls hor me ( which is kinda fair since controls are really one of the most important parts of a game when compared to extra content). Now what I stated before doesn't mean that people aren't allowed to like the DS version or even prefer it over the original, I'm just bringing up how even though the controls are really the one thing wrong about the DS version, it really is something that can legitimately make it or break it for people. The DS version would've been perfect if it released for the 3DS ( Like they did for the N64 Zelda titles and Star Fox 64, where the Circle pad could at least emulate analog control a lot better to where its not a major issue like it is here.
***** My apologies if my comment came off as an angry rant, it's not. I'm just a guy who has compulsion to get a lot of points across when making a claim.
I personally loved the music in this game. I feel the game had a great atmosphere all around. Also seeing each boss grow in size was AWESOME. Have you tried the cheat with the parana plant boss where you hit it from the edge of the platform and Kamek comes out and says "OH MY!" Lol, love it! The final boss fight was also beyond epic. =D
Yoshis island ds is way longer than the original. Ds had one less world but by world 3 in yoshis island ds it takes 20 minutes to be a level and the castle levels by that point take at least 30 minutes to beat.
Listening to the review's GBA music while knowing SNES music by heart: I want to claw my ears out, it is so tinny. It is like going from CD music to a high-compression MP3!
I feel like whatever the game lacks in setting variety, it makes up for in enemy variety. Almost every single level introduces some kind of new enemy (or even friendly!) character, and they're all really well-drawn and have interesting takes on the mechanics. I love, for example, the baseball-themed enemies with gloves and bats who will catch your eggs and hit them back at you. I love the Fuzzies that make Yoshi trip out on LSD. I love the level with the line of Ghost Shy Guys in the ceiling, passing along bombs that they will toss down at you. I love the special Dragonball Z Lakitu that literally shows up for only one level in the game to throw Spirit Bombs at you. There's just so much _personality_ to the enemies in this game, it made it really fun and compelling for me back in the day, because I was always wondering who or what weird new thing I'd run into next.
why the rush? there is only ONE yoshis island. take your fucking time enjoy it. the level design is smooth flowing as fuck, the art is glorious, and its a joy to play really.
The GBA port was one of my favorite games growing up. My parents got me a Gameboy Advance SP for Christmas and this game. The Gameboy Advanced SP was so slick and I loved this game so much.
I really like hearing about these games from someone who (if I'm understanding correctly) wasn't able to play them when they were originally released. It's an interesting perspective.
Actually there is a MAJOR difference in the GBA version that makes it somewhat superior to the SNES. After defeating Bowser you unlock 6 hidden levels that were not present at all in the original version and they all do things that you never really did outside of said levels and they also bring back elements that really only originally occurred once like the Car form and enemies like Barney Bubbles, Harry Hedgehogs, Spikes, Pyro Dangles, Boo Men Bluffs, Grim Leechers, Grunts, Stretches and a new enemy entirely called the Biting Bullet Bill. The enemies that I mentioned are extremely rare and otherwise appeared only once or twice in a single level.
I do know about the extra levels, and I'm pretty sure I mentioned them in the review. It's definitely something that the GBA version has that the SNESTER version doesn't, but seeing as I thought the game's length was pushing it to begin with, I figured it hypocritical to use that as a noteworthy addition or improvement. Obviously, I'm in the minority on this game in general, so if that makes the difference for you, then sure. It's a worthwhile addition to the GBA version that makes it potentially more worth picking up than it's 16 bit cousin.
just the fact that you have all the games grouped up in a single handheld system should make all the Mario Advance games an immediate Remake, with the originals only standing up for collectionists. It's still worth watching your videos to get a review of the game and being filled in with the differences between original and remake, though, good entertaining and educational value.
I like the original more because the graphical effects, like the fuzzies on "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy", look so much better. I also prefer Yoshi's original sound effects over his Yoshi Story voice. Yoshi being silent sorta makes me emphasize with him more. Reminds me of those "Mindy and Buttons" segments from the Animaniacs cartoons.
Super Mario Advance 3 was the game I got when I first got my GBA all those years ago. It still holds a special place in my heart as a result, but... I honestly prefer the SNES version.
Yoshi’s Island is one of my favorite SNES games. I still play those games, even Super MarioKart! I admit to being an old school gamer lol. Keep rocking!
The gba version is better. The music is almost identical to snes. There is more stuff. And also i like the Yoshi's story sounds more. It gave yoshi a lot more character and life. Also the crying is less annoying. The game sounds nicer too. (Mostly). In defense of the SNES version. You can see the game way better. Unless The Gba version is played on a GBA SP or DS. (The DS has room for GBA game cartridges) in The SNES version, there are more glitches. And the game on the gba has a smaller screen where you can focus more.
10:40 you mean 72 there is 96 exits if you count secret ways out but there is just 72 levels unless you count the top secret area or yoshis house then it will be 74
Is it? It didn't sell quite as well as major Mario titles, but it seems like a really common opinion is that it's a top-tier 2D platformer, if not a top-tier game in general.
18:24 - 18:42: To be fair, Donkey Kong '94 (for the gameboy) ALSO came out before Yoshi's Island, so Mario might have been taken to the Big City, then back to the Mushroom Realm during the events of Donkey Kong '94.
ExoParadigmGamer Regardless, people are making headcanons and timelines based on evidence given from canon Mario games. I might as well consider Donkey Kong Circus canon, as well as Donkey Kong '94. However, DK94 and DK Arcade are two entirely seperate entities, based on Dafawfulizer's Mario Timeline Theory, in which since Cranky is the original DK, that would mean, Mario is not the original Jumpman, but is actually his father. However, if I were to make a timeline, The Arcade DK comes before Yoshi's Island, then New Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Island DS, Wrecking Crew, Donkey Kong '94 (because DK Jr. made an appearance along side the Red-Tie wearing DK), Donkey Kong Jr, Mario Bros (in which Bowser sends monsters to gum up the plumbing as a distraction to the Marios), and Super Mario Bros (where Mario and Luigi noticed that the Kingdom is in danger).
+Robert Walker Mario is Jumpman. Donkey Kong 94 for the GameBoy is an extension of Donkey Kong for the arcade, and it shows modern designs of Pauline and Mario, which means Mario and Jumpman are the same person. The reason why original Donkey Kong age to Cranky Kong, while Mario remains the same age is because Nintendo breaks continuities in their games.
What are you talking about with the extra and secret levels being shorter a few of the extra ones are short but thats cause they hard as hell and the secret levels are really long
I don’t understand why the GBA remake got released on the Wii U Virtual Console but not the SNES original. Don’t get me wrong; the remake is perfectly fine. However, having both versions would’ve been nice.
Homestar runner. It’s a website, a great website you should check out on the computer.(doesn’t really work on mobile) it was the most popular between 2000-2010.
Well, the sixth secret level is certainly pretty darn long. It's called 'Endless World of Yoshis' for a reason (it can easily take about half an hour if you're stuck or don't know where to go). It's pretty brutal too. Perhaps too much so. But yeah, it's an interesting review. Perhaps a little too focused on the game in general rather than the differences between the remake and original, but an interesting and somewhat new perspective none the less.
The GBA port is really good. I grew up with it and I think I will prefer it for another playthrough instead of the original SNES version. I always wondered if doing 100% of the GBA version was rewarded with something. I tried once to 100% the Extra levels, but I could not find all the red coins or flowers. There was unfortunately no walkthrough on the internet which could help me on the GBA exclusive levels.
I guess your problem with the SNES version is self-explanatory (which is that 100%ing the game is more frustrating than in the GBA version, but honestly, I think both versions are a lot of fun)!
I'm sorry, but this is one review that I'm gonna have to disagree with. I think you're being too harsh on it because of the way you played the game is what makes you think the game is boring. Some of the level's length is long. Yes. I won't denied that. But that doesn't mean it's an bad thing as long as it's done right, not too over-exhausted, don't have to literally to get every collecthon to beat the game and as long as you have an save feature. This game does the length perfectly fine enough. It's not like say Sonic Unleashed where the Werehog stages really takes about over 10 minutes to complete the level while still looking for the Sun & Moon medals and the fact that there mandatory. Now that is an bad length.
We need more comments like this, and this is coming from a fan of Sonic Unleashed HD (and an even bigger fan of Yoshi’s Island because I’d take Baby Mario’s sobbing over Sonic Unleashed’s sun & moon medals any day, especially in Partners in Time where the Baby Mario Bros. are so hilarious with their cuteness!!).
I can't believe Mr. Exo didn't mention how the GBA version butchers the hallucinogenic effect when Yoshi touches a Fuzzy! He didn't even show it, even though it's one of the coolest, most memorable moments of the game. I just don't understand! Why...why...
Partners in Time being one of the darkest Mario games of all time is why that game, like the other pre-2010s Mario RPGs deserves more credit than Sticker Star. There were a lot of underrated Mario games in the past like Yoshi's Island (GBA & SNES), the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series (pre-Tipping Stars), Mario Bros. (GBA), Mario & Wario, Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES), the Super Mario Land trilogy (especially the sequels), Hotel Mario (in a so-bad-it’s-good way) and many others.
These Are Awesome Reviews Man Really Enjoying These....The Final Boss Fight in This Game Is Also One Of My Favorites & That Music That Plays At The End While The Stork Flies U Home Does Get Me Emotional
14:12 Or, you could just stand on the very left side of the platform before triggering the boss fight, and throw an egg at the not-yet-transformed piranha plant. Kamek will then say "OH MY!" and you skip the bossfight entirely
You say it's annoying reaching the end of a level and not getting all the coins or flowers, but the red coins make a certain noise when you collect them all, and the flowers give you a 1-up when you collect them all. Plus you can check your score at any point throughout the level. So it's not really a problem reaching the end of a level and 'discovering' you don't have all the coins and flowers.
I got to say after watching your review video that your points made sense! Especially for those of us who played Super Mario for decades, and somehow discovered Yoshi's Island, it marks a departure from the whole Super Mario Vs. Koopa and Princess Rescue Format. I found it refreshing with cuteness overload from the shy guys trying sooo hard to be human or natives! All overall, I am glad to have seen your video by chance, and your review is definitely appreciated! :)
The sound design is way better on the GBA... I can't go back to playing on the SNES because of the various sounds Yoshi makes. The Yoshi's story SFX make a huge difference!
The GBA version also has the Super Mario Bros mini game. It also has some slightly duller colors than the SNES version but that can be fixed via a code online.
@@LookingGlass69 Yes, I know. What I'm saying is Miyamoto wasn't that involved in making Yoshi's Island. He was very busy with Mario 64, which came out the following year. What's more, these rumors that Miyamoto hated DKC are unfounded -- just urban legend.
It’s been a few years and it seems that our wishes of this game being re-released have been answered. The GBA version was ported to Wii U and the SNES version is now on both the SNES Classic and SNES thing for Nintendo Switch Online. I’m glad Nintendo finally remembered how much of a classic this game is.
When I got this for snes back in the day I played it TO DEATH. Then when I got my Advance sp and found out that it was on the advance as well. I was soooo happy to have it on the go, and I played it just as much as the original if not more.
You know, after playing both versions, I've noticed the SNES version's timer goes down much faster than the GBA remake. Does anyone else notice this, or is it just me? Also, I believe the reason Nintendo hasn't re-released the SNES version is because it uses the Super-FX chip, which belongs to Argonaut.

10:17 ok what the hell are you talking about in that level i could go back and grab what i missed so you need to play this agian.
Ok in some levels yes your right there are invisible walls is some levels but not in the level you showed
Do you think maybe you were getting fatigued because you were trying to plow through it in one go, instead of playing it here and there?
The GBA version has been released on the Wii U virtual console. And you can play it on the 3DS if you happen to be a 3DS ambassador.
11:49 Looks like someone is channeling their inner AGVN.
0:24 Man, all this time I didn’t realize that Yoshi’s Island on the GBA doesn’t include the, “Super Mario World 2” part of the title. But can you imagine how awful that would sound? “Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3”
It’s actually worse than, “Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3”!
Why are you complaining about how long the game is? Video games are made for people to occupy their time! Would you rather the game be shorter?
+ZeroSuitRosalina Cancer
ZeroSuitRosalina Shut up
Everyone has different perspectives and opinions on how they view games so don't let that affect you.
This game is legit only 8-10 hours long, it's not as long as said, unless you want to complete the game fully
Disco Train long games can be done right, but the problem with yoshis island is that it drags on for far too long.
Super Mario 64 Vs Super Mario 64 DS
Make it Happen.
Toadtoad12345 I don't own a 3DS capture card.
ExoParadigmGamer use a ds emulator maybe? idk... :/
Maybe when SM64 DS comes out on the Wii U Virtual Console.
I'm just a guy who has compulsion to get a lot of points across when making a claim.
great video but I feel like you spent more time summarizing the game in general instead of discussing the differences between the 2 versions
Him: "Soundtrack isn't very memorable"
Me: *flower garden noises*
Probably the most surprising comment I've heard about this game's soundtrack.
Shrek: HEY GREEN DONKEY!!!
Yoshi: YYYOOOSSSHHHIII!!!!!!!
I like yoshis island a lot but the final boss is not epic
The GBA version in on wii u!
my brother played the orginal and he didnt notice a difference gameplay wise so it is definitely a good remake!
He's a noob
Well he had only a week or two to make the review
The bad guy becoming huge at the end hmm were have I seen this befor.
Another random difference: Touch fuzzy get dizzy waves smoother and looks trippier on SNES.
The GBA port was one of my favorite games growing up. My parents got me a Gameboy Advance SP for Christmas and this game. The Gameboy Advanced SP was so slick and I loved this game so much.
Sweet sweet memories
I really like hearing about these games from someone who (if I'm understanding correctly) wasn't able to play them when they were originally released. It's an interesting perspective.
This guy deserves more subs.
Why, thank you. :)
Nice
Yea but the stork left them at the wrong house
I thought this video would be a comparison between two versions of Yoshi's Island, not a full on in-depth description of the games. Change the title.
just the fact that you have all the games grouped up in a single handheld system should make all the Mario Advance games an immediate Remake, with the originals only standing up for collectionists. It's still worth watching your videos to get a review of the game and being filled in with the differences between original and remake, though, good entertaining and educational value.
Took me my *entire* summer break to complete
Cough Cough "world of yoshies"
I still haven't beaten all the special levels or 100% everything. Still a great game. Both versions are great.
Super Mario Bros 3 was my first gameboy game too
@@obi--wan7181 Advance 3, not Bros 3. Bros 3 was Advance 4.
And...a couple years after my last post, the SNES version has been released on Switch.
Wait this was recorded in 2014? How’s there super mario odyssey music?
But...i still don't get WHY Kamek captured the baby mario bros...did he know they were gonna be a nuisance in the future or something?
Yep, that was exactly the idea.
ExoParadigmGamer Oh...I never understood that when I played the games.
+Gleaming “Light” Dawn its a kids game it doesn't matter XD
I assume so. I mean, they are a part of the Mushroom Kingdom & wasn't like most residents. I guess Kamek suspected something off.
Gleaming Dawn He Knows theyre gonna be heroes because theyre star childrens
Yoshi’s Island is one of my favorite SNES games. I still play those games, even Super MarioKart! I admit to being an old school gamer lol.
Keep rocking!
I'm so glad we can play those classics with Nintendo Switch Online now!
My membership doesn't end until 2024
You didn't like the soundtrack??? I'd say it's up there with DKC 2.
Amen. I’ll say it again, part of why the Super Nintendo is hands-down one of the greatest consoles is because of its games and their presentations.
Too Long? No. Most games I play (of many genres) take up WAY more time.
10:40 you mean 72 there is 96 exits if you count secret ways out but there is just 72 levels unless you count the top secret area or yoshis house then it will be 74
Why is this game so underrated?
Robert Walker I've never played Donkey Kong '94, so I wouldn't know about any of that.
ExoParadigmGamer Nintendo actually did re-release the GBA version of Yoshi's Island on the Wii U virtual console.
Anyways, will you review "Donkey Kong '94"? The game was also re-released on the virtual console.
10:42 did you really say 96 levels instead of 96 exits again? I’m not gonna make fun of you for that but be in for some annoying comments!
The game is on Wii U eShop, the Gameboy Advance version to be exact.
What are you talking about with the extra and secret levels being shorter a few of the extra ones are short but thats cause they hard as hell and the secret levels are really long
13:44 Is it just me or does that enemy look similar to Kirby
you complain about the game going on for too long, i think the same of your reviews...
supertiagolas Then stop watching his videos.

I don’t understand why the GBA remake got released on the Wii U Virtual Console but not the SNES original. Don’t get me wrong; the remake is perfectly fine. However, having both versions would’ve been nice.
3:05 what is that from
Homestar runner.
I totally disagree with your opinion on the world themes. I thought this game had very memorable world aesthetics.
21:30: What's that music? It's so... Soothing.
I think the psesific remix is from Yoshi's island DS opening theme.
No mention of the frog boss?
My SNES cart's battery died and deleted my save when I got to world 6. I still haven't tried to beat it again.
I love this game just as much as Super Mario World, it's so unique, it's lengthy, and it's challenging, I love it.
There’s an issue with the GBA resolution that actually makes some jumps blind that weren’t in the SNES version.
Say, what are your thoughts on Yoshi's Island DS? Personally, I love that game.
7:57 you forgot snifit
These Are Awesome Reviews Man Really Enjoying These....The Final Boss Fight in This Game Is Also One Of My Favorites & That Music That Plays At The End While The Stork Flies U Home Does Get Me Emotional
Having a very long game to me was fantastic, everything is perfect with this game.
Apparently, the music in the GBA version is lower-quality because the SNES' sound chip was made by Sony.
14:12 Or, you could just stand on the very left side of the platform before triggering the boss fight, and throw an egg at the not-yet-transformed piranha plant. Kamek will then say "OH MY!" and you skip the bossfight entirely
+MarioKart7z Really?
Long games are my favourite so Wink Wink back at you.
There's still a question that remains unanswered...
WHO THE FUCK ARE THEIR PARENTS
Miyamoto can only make a good game when he's trying to spite someone.
Miyamoto wasn't all that involved in this game. He was busy with Mario 64. This is a Takashi Tezuka joint.
@@TrevRockOne i meant yoshi island
@@LookingGlass69 Yes, I know. What I'm saying is Miyamoto wasn't that involved in making Yoshi's Island. He was very busy with Mario 64, which came out the following year. What's more, these rumors that Miyamoto hated DKC are unfounded -- just urban legend.
there's a object that is unused in the original but used of the gba version, they're bullet bill launchers
I also prefer some sfx on the GBA version over the SNES version (Shy Guy's coming from the pipes).
Yoshi's island is just so perfect, and beautiful
When I got this for snes back in the day I played it TO DEATH. Then when I got my Advance sp and found out that it was on the advance as well. I was soooo happy to have it on the go, and I played it just as much as the original if not more.
The og Yoshi's island has much, MUCH tighter controls
You know, after playing both versions, I've noticed the SNES version's timer goes down much faster than the GBA remake. Does anyone else notice this, or is it just me? Also, I believe the reason Nintendo hasn't re-released the SNES version is because it uses the Super-FX chip, which belongs to Argonaut.
So Kamek is Rita Repulsa, when his monsters fail once he makes them grow.
