I remember as a kid sitting on the cinders in front of the main crowd, along with the other kids, seeing the great Tommy Finney, I saw him on numerous occasions but at that age never really appreciated what I was seeing, it is only later in life that I realised I was honoured to see a footballing genius. If, through injury Tom couldn't play they left the news until the ground was full to make the announcement [it made a difference of 10,000] pity the poor sod, and for the life of me I cannot think of his name, who was Tommy's substitute, he came out to a chorus of boos, imagine that, he still jokes about it. I had the honour of sitting next to Tom at the wedding reception of a friend of mine, we chatted like old buddies, also my wife's grandads' sister Elsie Noblett was Tommy's late wife, when Tommy was doing a book signing of his autobiography she mentioned this to him and he chatted to her about it, much to the chagrin of the queue behind. In my opinion, [and the opinion of the greatest footballing minds of today, and yesterday for that matter]. The man will never be bettered either sportingly or as, well, just a man. RIP Tom, thanks for everything.

It's sad that there is so little footage of him and the little that there
Is of him is of him in his thirties. From what I have seen he reminds
    Me a lot of Gazza.

Sir Tom Finney. A wonderful footballer. A wonderful man. How much would be be worth today? Bill Shankly who played with him at North End considered him the best. That will do for me.

Thanks. Preston North End always had a big following in Scotland. Note the size of the match report in the Sunday Post. PNE had lots of Scottish players. Bill Shankly of course. Lots did not recognise his rare talent. They did recognise that he was Box Office. Unfortunatly Tom did not see North End back in the big time. Mybe we will do it one day.... for Sir Tom.

My idol, only saw him play once near the end of his career against Spurs, about 65 years ago I suppose. What a man and a player. The best.

His best position was as a deep lying centre forward. He didn't play there until the end of his career
For Preston when he was 35 where he scored 27 and 28 goals in his last two seasons.
Imagine how much better he would have been as a deep lying centre forward
If he played their his youth when he was lighting quick.
He is probably the most complete attacking player of all time as he could
play in all five forward positions to a world class level.

I only saw him once. I was 10 or 11. I remember more of what I saw that day than in 100s of matches subsequently mainly the great Man U team of the 60s. He made that much of an impression. I can still see in my mind's eye the 2 goals he scored (from the embankment end of Burnden Park). One with his left, one with his right. One of them he sent 3 defenders the wrong way (and these were good defenders) before slamming it into the top corner.
