Nice job. Nice touch with the troubleshooting. Ignore the complainers. You took the time to be helpful. They did not. I had no problem at all following your instructions!
I originally watched your video because a pop up drain came in the box with the new faucet and I was eventually going to replace the old drain with the new pop up. As I was replacing the faucet I accidently hit the drain pipe and it broke off! Boy was I glad I had watched your video and replaced it with no problems. Thank you for posting your video, it was very helpful. As with LizDOBEE, I am a woman and a first time plumber.
Ditto your comments. Moen is getting scary these days. They did not document that older Monticello shower arms are NOT using the 7/64" set screw, caused us a year of drips and recently, 3+ hours of metal cutting of the alloy handle. All due to the wrong screw was used 20 years ago and they refused to understand this. The screw head got stripped and had to be cut. After all this Moen declined to ship us a new handle and linked us to a $170 handle. What a joke?!! Yet their amazon.ca store link shows the same handle @ $27 or so. Received it last week. Worked perfectly. Not pleased.
This is seriously the BEST most descriptive video ever. All the other videos on this topic go way too fast and skip over details. PERFECT. A++++++. Thanks for helping me with this project.
W OW ! This was published back in 2012 . . .my viewing date is August, 2018. Six years down the road of this YOU TUBE tutorial. I am ( a retired female ) who is trying to not pay the high price of plumber installation -- I have learned numerous other house maintenance skills; so figured I could attempt this. You gave outstanding instruction !! You were ' real ' about any possible installation hang-ups . . . you presented a ' still-got-a-leak' solution and did not cover over it. Again - WOW ...Thanxs !
thanks for adding about the leak at the end. I watched this yesterday before I installed the set I bought yesterday. Finished it and it was leaking exactly like yours was. I had to look through my history to find this again to watch what you did to troubleshoot the problem...................and it works like a charm..Thanks for taking the time to save me money and heart ache.
Thank you so much. I was having an awful time with getting my old one out and you saved me from a world of headache. And all for free too… I can’t state enough of my gratitude.
Although you may not have liked it to happen while making your video, I'm glad you had the problem separating the pipe from the flange. I've done this type of job before, but I liked your tip of using the vice grips to get it loose. That was the little something extra I needed. Thanks.
I had the same problem in separating the chrome basin flange from old drain pipe nothing worked in holding the two parts! I finally used a variable speed Sawzall with a metal cutting blade to just CUT the drain. Hold everything steady and begin sawing at slow speed gradually increasing speed. Make cut ABOVE the pop-up on old drain, so remaining old pipe FITS out the top WITH the chrome basin flange. After the pipe is cut, the rest of the old drain and pop up threading portion will drop off below. ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES when working below things. Power tools can throw a lot of old metal, dirt, rust, shavings will due to vibration! Shake off your hair and wipe forehead of dirt, grit BEFORE removing safety glasses-Your eyes are important! Just a small piece in your eye can be serious.
EXCELLENT video! I did 3 sinks 2 years ago and searched for answers and found some info back then. This one helped remind of all the steps when I had one clogged P-Trap and had to take everything down and redo. on that sink.
Thanks to your video, I was able to figure out how to take the pop out drain plug OUT because it didn't keep hair from going down the drain!! Now I'll get one of the mesh drain covers.
This video was AWESOME! Our plumber's estimate was $595! With this video and $35 in supplies (it would have only been $25 but the brushed nickel drain stop was $10 more) my hubby and I did the replacement in about an hour (and that includes trial and error time). THANK YOU!!!!!
On my own, I had much of my hardware off, except the flange from the pipe. Thanks to your video (@6:30-7:10), I saved myself some head scratching. So cheers!
Thanks for the video. I needed to see what to do if the top part was stuck. I also had to put tape on the center threads and leak was gone too. Thanks again!
I am dangerous with tools and home repair. Written instructions never seem to help me. I can read well but I never understand the instructions. When they start talking about a "flange" or whatever, I do not know what these mean. With this video I was able to replace bathroom faucet with new one. Excellent teaching. Thanks
Thanks so much. Your video was most helpful in avoiding the tricky parts of the installation. Without realizing it, I wound up purchasing the exact same unit that you installed. Everything went perfect - and no leaks !!!
The advice for the teflon tape on the factory pipe is priceless. Also will be working on the same Moen outfit. Very nice to know (in advance) :) Thank you!
Thank you man! I desperately needed this because this was my EXACT PROBLEM! Look at this video and I JUST got it off a second ago! You're are the best!
Thanks very much! You saved me a call to the plumber. Also, thanks for not skipping over the part where you discovered the leak... if I hadn't seen that part, I may have thrown in the towel if that happened to me.
Thanks so much for this video. I spend 2 hours wrestling with the same drain pipe that you were using. I had the same leaking problems that you had. I thought it was a defect. I hope for better luck now that I have seen this video. Thanks again
One of the best videos I have seen - on ANY topic!! Thanks for "elaborating" on the instructions that Kohler supplied. Much appreciated and much better than those guys who demonstrate how to replace a faucet/drain on a counter-top or workbench!
Because I am not as strong as you guys, it has taken me a long time to loosen all the parts of this assembly. I am going to wrap plumbers' tape on all joints to prevent leaks. Thanks for showing all the mishaps and how you solved them. You inspire me. :-)
Well done video! Thanks so much for all the hints. I've replaced a couple of these drains in my 'very' old house and am getting ready to do two more. They are NEVER as simple as the video's made by the Big Box stores. Your video shows all the warts and how to get past them!
Nice video, and I had the same leak problem on the tailpipe. The plumbing supply store expert told me the threads were too fine to put anything on them for sealing but, as you just demonstrated, either Teflon tape or pipe dope should eliminate a drip problem from this connection. It pays to get a second opinion. Thanks for showing the solution!
Follow Up: the Teflon plumbing tape worked perfectly at stopping my tailpipe leak. Thanks for your timely advice! NOTE: the reason an expert might tell people not put anything on these fine threads is that it could cause cross threading when the tailpipe is reattached. This is a valid concern, so if you do use Teflon tape be extra careful when screwing in the tailpipe.
This video TOTALLY ROCKED MY WORLD. I had a 13 year-old bathroom sink drain to replace. It was like the one in the video except the fitting with the pop-up lever was brass. It was totally corroded. The last hurdle was releasing the chrome top of the train and and the trick shown worked. At first it didn't and I heated up the metal pipes with a hair dryer. You might try that trick. I was pulling what little hair I have left out of my head. --Victor Verbose PS the muck that came out of thing almost made me PUKE! :-)
This is a great video. I watched it once before starting my sink replacement, then during my project I went back to review the part about fitting the flange into the drain pipe. The fact that yours leaked on the first try which you fixed with plumber's tape was very helpful. I had a similar problem and fixed it. Thanks for your helpful guidance.
You saved the day for me, for sure. I put this sink in about 10 years ago and needed a refresher so I could get the old drain out and new one in. I have a paper-towel in the cabinet to check for slow leaks overnight. (I feel better doing this just to be sure it's all perfect.) Tomorrow, I'll have the stuff back in the cabinet! Thank you so much.
You sir, saved my life! Well, my bathroom sink... But this was a gem of a video. I had the same problem with the flange being rusted in the bottom part. Could not figure out how to get it unscrewed. I was really close to calling a plumber. I was able to replace the whole thing myself. Your video was really helpful. Thanks again!
Thank you so much Mr. Backyardmech. We did this in just under an hour thanks to your amazing direction. You saved us a boatload of money. :) God bless you and your family!
Thanks b'y ! I had that same leak at just below the ball valve and just about lost my marbles! I didn't know that tail piece even came off! Thanks again! I'll try that tomorrow
out of all the diy videos, yours definitely helped me the most! I didn't think I'dfinish but your video gave me that final push I needed! thank you! ✌& 💗
I solved that problem getting out the stuck flange unscrewed from the pipe. I got out my grinder and 30 seconds later, problem solved. I grinded the pipe right off and then the screw part. So happy!
THANK YOU for the hints. The problem I'm having with mine is the flange is corroded onto the bottom piece. I may end up cutting the bottom piece to get it all apart.
Thanks for the video. I thought my tailpiece was welded in and attached and see that it is removable and now I can fix it without dis-assembly and taking the new/old one back to Lowes. Thanks.
I had a flange that wouldn't budge when I did this about 10 years ago. In the end I had to remove the sink and cut with a hack saw as close to the underside of the sink as I could get. I then had to use a hammer and screw driver to break and bend the flange inward and finally got it off. Hardest improvement job I've done.
So useful. My big problem was with the pop up valve and how to get the old one out. Will be looking to buy a wrench like you used to tighten pipe under sink.
Yeah. I'm up to my eyeballs in drain gunk and fused, rusted fittings; it's only right that you are too lol. Seriously, it great to see there's a way out of this mess. Thnx for a realistic vid.
Thank you so much for this video!! I watched this video today and was able to follow along and do the exact same things you were doing and now my bathroom sink does not smell disgusting anymore 😀
Thanks!.. I installed the new assembly, straight from Home D, which came with no instructions. I thought the assy was 1-piece! So when it leaked, I took it off and returned it for another. It leaked at the same place. :( So I hunted on Google and found your video. The bottom pipe was loose when I checked.. in order to not remove EVERYTHING, I simply uncoupled the ring from the bottom pipe to the J-loop and removed the bottom pipe, teflon'd the ### out of it, (just in case), and screwed it back together. With the upper portion still attached to the sink, it was easy to tighten the bottom pipe with channeloks and re-connect the J-loop. Thanks for the Teflon tip!.. Wish I watched it first....
It’s helps a lot when trying to insert the rod through the bottom of the popup, to remove the pipe from the bottom of the assembly. That way you can feel with your fingers to line everything up. Or in a case like this one, you could even look up inside...
Well, I just did mine and had to use my metal cutting saw to cut right above where the adjustable stopper stem area of the pipe. And it’s interesting how you went from the scene of grip pliers above the sink to the rim of the drain, but you didn’t video share demonstrating how long it took you to unwind the pipe. 😂
Just do what I did and use a dremel to cut off the top part and the drain pipe will fall out when the P-trap is removed. The heck with the nut - get new stuff and use plumber's grease one everything except the water connections (some say don't even use tape, but I use tape anyway). I also used one of those rubber flexible P-traps when putting the whole thing together because, at least in my house, nothing is lined up properly. The kitchen sink drain behind the P-trap actually flows downhill!
I am also a first-time female plumber. Your instructions were so thorough that even when I had a leak I didn't panic. Used your instructions and the leak is gone. Everything is good to go EXCEPT the pop up rod/lever isn't long enough to reach the clevis strap with the holes. I am a good 4-5 inches short. The previous clevis strap was bent in several places, no wonder it never worked well. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do at this point? Sure would appreciate it. Thank you again Back Yard Mechanic, you're video was just what I need to think I could pull this replacement off.
Great Video, Saved my day, Showed me how to get the stuck flange unscrewed from the pipe. Then just followed your directions from there on.

Thank you so much! The printed instructions that came with the drain are terrible. I was nearly in tears before I watched your video. Saved my sanity.
The vice-grip on the flange was the what I was looking for. Finally got the thing out. Thanks!

you are a very good teacher. You explained every single step, and didn't assume that we knew, I like that. Thank You very very much.
I am an amateur. I appreciated the simple explanation and then your troubleshooting a couple of common issues. Thanks!
Thank you so much. I was having an awful time with getting my old one out and you saved me from a world of headache. And all for free too… I can’t state enough of my gratitude.
Thanks for showing what could go wrong as they usually do
It was nice to see a real world example on what to do when things don't go quite right.

Thank you for uploading a tutorial like this- it help me and guide me to remove my super old drain to replace it, it was a success project.

The only thing that was I notice was the Teflon tape should be wrap clockwise like the nut. Great video.
Oh, this video saved my day. It demo-ed a sink model that is otherwise hardly to find. Thanks!
Thanks for the video, the hint on using the vice-grips was extremely useful.
Hacksawed the drain pipe. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for showing a difficult situation and motivating me to keep trying. Great details.
Glad the video helped Maria !

Was struggling with the flange, thanks for the video !
helpful. I was actually looking for a video on how to break loose a metal p trap but found this.
Very educational and easy to follow instructions.
Your video was easy to follow and solved my issues with my sink. Much appreciated.
You just blew by through the most difficult task. Thanks
Thanks for the video 6:15-7:15 saved the day for me.
Best video I found. Very detailed. Thank you!
I'm not by any means a handy person about to hallenge himself. this video has been a great help replacing my pop up drain. thank you
loved the video. A big part is that you showed what do do when things go wrong, which they always do
That they do George !
backyardmech what can you do if that nut is stripped on the bottom?
out of all the diy videos, yours definitely helped me the most! I didn't think I'dfinish but your video gave me that final push I needed! thank you! ✌& 💗
Thank you so much! A perfect how-to video, with excellent visual and explanation. Wish they were all as clear as this! :-)
Thank you so much! Just replaced my bathroom faucet and used your video step by step!

So useful. My big problem was with the pop up valve and how to get the old one out. Will be looking to buy a wrench like you used to tighten pipe under sink.
thanks! no one else on here had what to do when the top part is stuck!!
Thank you! I learned how to remove the stopper of this type here.
Thank you for this video. I have learned to do so many things for myself thanks to people like you !!
This was really helpful, thanks...even to the last bit about using the visegrips to loosen the threads from the top.
Exactly what I needed. Very good step by step instructions.
Good job, I had a leak too with that metal
Pipe extension
Yeah. I'm up to my eyeballs in drain gunk and fused, rusted fittings; it's only right that you are too lol. Seriously, it great to see there's a way out of this mess. Thnx for a realistic vid.
Thanks bachyardmech....I was struggling with my pedestal sink drain installation. I referenced your video and had great success.
Awesome... Thank you very much.. I had gone clueless on what to do to remove flange.. huge help.
And thank you for the comment Emmanuelle !
Exactly! Thanks for the tips!
Thank you backyardmech. Perfect instructions for THE PROBLEM. Because of you...problem solved.
thank you for this , going to find some plumbers putty now and get me pipes
Amazing video. Very clear and easy to follow. Thanks so much!!
Great video, Easy instruction and clear video.
Really did help me a lot. Thank you so much, your a life saver :)
You just saved my butt. Thank you for your #CanadianWisdom
Very informative. I only wish I had your access. My sink is built into a cabinet and it's a real chore.
Thank you so much for this video!! I watched this video today and was able to follow along and do the exact same things you were doing and now my bathroom sink does not smell disgusting anymore 😀
You're welcome Krista - nice to know i could help you make your sink not smell disgusting :)

The previous clevis strap was bent in several places, no wonder it never worked well. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do at this point? Sure would appreciate it. Thank you again Back Yard Mechanic, you're video was just what I need to think I could pull this replacement off.
were you able to buy a longer clevis strap or Pop up rod/lever?
You're welcome Liz and thanks for the feedback. Glad it helped .
Very clear instructions. Thank you.
