    A good review. Thank you. As others have commented a battery angle grinder is not likely to perform as well, plus the fact that you had the lock clamped in a work bench. When it's on a bike it's likely to have more movement whilst cutting which will also increase the difficulty and time it'll take to cut it.

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  Год назад +9

      Yep, that was my thoughts when planning the video, but I only clamped it for the attack on the shackle, I tried to replicate it being 'loose' as much as i could for the main cut, but making allowances for filming.

  • @robchisholm72
    @robchisholm72 Год назад +5

    Given that most of the scrote's that carry out these attacks/thefts use a battery powered grinders and I doubt they'd have spare disks with them, I think that after a 30 second assault on the Litelok X1 they'd give up and move on to an easier target. I find a disc lock + chain is a good way to ensure your pride and joy is where you left it, especially in high theft area's like our major cities.

    Great test. I would have wanted to see a couple different disks, though. At very least regular cutting disks with aluminium oxide, silicon carbide and ceramic abrasive materials plus a basic diamond cutting disk. I guess regular thief probably has only basic disk but considering thiefs do not pay for their tools, using a more expensive disk would be a no-brainer for a thief. I would guess one of those would cut LiteLok pretty easily, probably the diamon cutting disk.

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks, Its a popular belief that diamond cutting discs are faster, however they are designed to last longer and do not cut quicker. I asked advice from a steel fabricator and engineer who advised using 'standard' fibre slitting discs as they are the quickest at cutting steel.

    • @MikkoRantalainen
      @MikkoRantalainen 5 месяцев назад

      @@mancavemoto It depends on material. If you're trying to cut ceramics, diamond disc is *also* much faster in addition to making higher quality cut. As we don't know what exact material LiteLok is made of, it would make sense to try multiple different discs to figure out which tool you should use.
      Using incorrect disc would be like trying to pick a disk detainer lock using pin tumbler lock picks and then declaring that disk detainer locks cannot be picked at all.

    The Material resistance is quite impressive.
    Though the wear on the angel Grinder is because of way to much force and not holding it straight as you said yourself, you can see the disc disintigrating in a few crucial moments.
    Other than that a battery powerd 6 Inch Angelgrinder with possibly higher surface speed and higher quality discs would perform somewhat better.

      From my experience as an electrician using 2x DeWalt 18v angle grinders with 4 and 5ah batteries cutting through steel on a somewhat regular basis, over the last few years, there's not a big difference compared to 240v/wired angle grinders.
      If I were a bike thief I'd much rather cut through the steel bar frame instead of such locks they're attached to.
      I've got the X1, and recently also ordered the combo X3 with Core Plus 100 chain from Litelok, for my £1800 e-bike. So I'm far more sceptical of what public frame I lock onto.

      I disagree. Put a 19mm or 21mm Pragmasis chain and an Abloy 362 High Security lock + RL21 Roundlock and no son of a hound scumbag will be able to get your bike. Couple that with a locked gate and something like a Guardsman security barrier + alarm then it'd be impossible for the scumbags to even lift the bike over a barrier unless they spend 2 hours plus trying to steal your bike in which case they'd be caught by then. Just put something which takes an hour + to compromise. All the above might cost around £700 but if your bike is worth 10 times that or more then its worthwhile because the locks with last you a lifetime. Over a 20 year riding career that's only £35 per year, cheapest insurance and peace of mind you'll ever have.

    I'd think and interesting test of this lock to a standard d lock would be to use a bench mounted metal saw with an abrasive disk. Hang say 10lbs on the handle and time how long it takes to cut through each. I know you probably don't have that equipment, but maybe someone else who watches does.

    A thieves most precious thing is “time” if it’s going to take too long, it’s not worth it. They are more likely to find an easier target. Also if the thief knows the cost of the lock they can bet the owner probably has more tricks up his sleeves. There might be a hidden alarm or even an Apple air tag somewhere. The goal is to make it look not worth their time because time is something they won’t get back if they waste it, specially on something that’s going to eat up your grinder wheels reducing your opportunity for another target.
