I love your stance on how strict a 'real' Nuzlocke's rules have to be. It's refreshing as a person who started playing extremely late due to access reasons, and has disabilities that limit the way he does most everything, to see a pro who isn't an aggressive purist. Having fun, being allowed to work within your time and ability constraints, and feeling good about what you're doing should ALWAYS come first!
Yeah, I did my own first nuzlocke recently and the only rules were the basic ones: Name your pokemon; if the pokemon dies you can't use it again, and only one encounter per route. I also added an extra rule that forced me to play the way I would normally do, meaning I WOULD train my pokemon (which I normally don't) but I wouldn't check trainers' teams, build strategies or rely on swipping teams with a buffed pokemon. Just pure damage. After playing it, I reached the decision that training your pokemon is boring as all hell even with the emulator's speed up function, so next time I'll hack in some Rare Candy, which I consider cheating because I lost pokemon while training last time, but training is just not fun at all, so fuck that. There's also this friend of mine that adds a billion rules to make it more fun to him, like finding Max Revives counting as a revived pokemon, being able to generate any item he needs to evolve a pokemon, or having 2 or 3 encounters per route with the possibility of running away from one of them. I don't approve of any of those, but it makes it fun for him, so it's okay
@@cosmefulanito6854 Reminds me of years ago, can’t remember where but I remember watching a Nuzlocke series on RUclips where the person playing allowed themself to revive one pokemon after the 8th gym I personally think it detracts from the point of nuzlockes, from a standpoint of both emotional detachment and challenge, but i also dont think its harming anyone so if people wanna do it thats cool
I like how you talked about how to deal with a wobbuffet because I remember crying when I played pokemon and encountered one when I was a child. I didn't know what this thing does so when I got my team almost wiped I caught one. Now my child brain didn't understand and just used those 2 moves so when I actually used it I said "wtf this is useless"
I low-key love the scene when the player and Hop fight against Gigantamax Eternatus and then the Sword and Shield Puppers come in and fuse with their respective rusty weapons. It’s just so cool to me.
Sword/Shield is a fantastic game to nuzlocke. There's tremendous variety (especially if you're using the DLC), the encounters are very easy to control even if you don't allow dens, and the game itself is very beatable without being too easy.
Another cool benefit of DLC: depending on your ruleset, you can go to Crown Tundra with just a single weak Pokemon and lose to Peony. You don't actually white out upon losing to him, which is usually considered the lose condition of a Nuzlocke. Then you can run into the Tundra and grind Ore to get some Ability Patches for things like Libero Cinderace and Grassy Surge Rillaboom
The only thing I hate about hustle Durant is that Durant can't learn Hone Claws in gen 8. I was gutted to find out my king couldn't learn hone claws even though it could back in older gens. Did my man's dirty
@@ssupermarlo You literally go to meet him at the train station to make sure he doesn't get lost ON HIS WAY HOME prior to even getting your starter. His internal compass is probably the equivalent of a compass with it's hands just endlessly spinning like a helicopter rotor. I'm amazed that they don't have to keep him on a leash just to make sure he doesn't wander off and get lost somewhere where he'll never be heard from again.
I don't get mad when creators pause the video they're reacting to and commentate because I'm here to listen to the creators input that's what a reaction is! Also, I like listening to your analysis on everything that happens as it's interesting, and it aids me as a pokemon player by learning new things!
Thought I’d like to throw out is that you mention after the Dragon Gym that protect is an option, but in Sword and Shield it’s optional at one of the tm shopkeepers in the pokecenters so it’s extremely easy to miss protect in these games, especially if going in blind like he did

I just really like the Yu-Gi-Oh reference that is Escavalier being called Gaia, after Yugi's Gaia the Fierce Knight. Hail yeah. I try and look up names that have a certain meaning. Like my Shinx in BDSP is named Mellan, Irish name meaning "little lightning" and if I can't find a good name, then I'll just name my mons after characters I like, such as I named my Infernape Azula, I've named my Klefki Sora cause....KEYS lol. And I remember naming my Gallade Riku cause he's all chivalrous. And I've always named Pikachu Mickey....after THAT Mickey. No regrets. Man even taking the nuzlocke thing out of it, nicknaming pokemon is just fun.
I usually pick a theme when I start. one time was anime characters, so my infernape was named jolyne, my hitmonchan was ippo, and so on (it was also a monotype run. still gotta finish that actually). another was just musical references, I got a tyranitar and named it godzilla, because of the song. was really proud of that one. there was also that one time I spend like 30+ balls on a chatot, that was paralyzed and on red health. named him NormCuatro the fourth legendary bird. (if only his second type wasn't normal... could get a cooler name). General Cuatro didn't fit

This video made me realize that bug has somehow snuck its way into my top 3 types (dark and ice; fire and steel if we expand to 5). So many cool bug types have trickled in each gen that it's hard not to like them now.
I loved this nuzlocke. The plays could have been better in a few of the situations, but overall the animation was incredible and given the excellent selection of pokémon, this run was very fun to watch.
*"How strict is the nuzlocke community?"* 1: Thou shalt state thy rules before thy challenge. 2: Thou shalt abide by thy rules or thine runs art forfeit. 3: This shalt be the whole of the law.
(op starts praising his Joltik while Wobbuffet's silhouette stands menacingly) Every Nuzlocker ever: "oh no." Edit: I love using ice types. I never have fun when I optimize, so I like to purposely use more challenging or gimmicky Pokemon.
I’ve done a bug type hardcore nuzlocke in sword. It’s especially fun when you use isle of armor pokemon. Pinsir, Volcorona, and especially Scolipede were very good to have for a lot of the game. It would have been easier if my dwebble and orbeatle had survived longer, but the extra challenge was also fun… also shuckle is probably the most important one to catch…
@@jpegcrust I have no idea about availability in this game, but a Masquerain with intimidate and Rain dance seems really good for this fight, as the sandstorm actually buffs the gym leader more than many people realize. Especially if you give your Pokémon speed Evs or have sticky web on a mon, this fight shouldn’t be too hard I think
God I love this idea. Really been thinking about a Mono-Normal run since the first time I saw this, and the rewatch and review watch through have just further motivated it. The fact that EVERY time you start popping off about a great encounter, that ‘mon gets dunked on quickly.
The only real issue with these animated nuzlockes is that we as an audience don't get to see if he's over leveled, using items, or playing on set for us to learn off of what he can do differently, other than that what a great video and fun run!
True. Unless the animator says you’d assume that they’re switch mode, using items, and roughly the same level as the cap. Just to give the most relevant advice. And if they’re over levelled and they don’t say then they’re a fucking pussy dude. Imagine, for example, how Jan was so surprised that Crustle survived that hit in the last fight. If the animator said “oh yeah it was level 67 lol” then it would make more sense sure, but would be a worse video. So they have a storytelling incentive to not let people know.
@@user-uv2cp1qd1j And in the video, the animator shows the Crustle having taken about 50% damage and was level 50. If that's the case, then that's really impressive considering the Charizard is level 65. And then he probably was underleveled for the fight.
Honestly galar did a great job with their bug types. Bug is my favorite type and haven't done a bug nuzlocke yet but want to so bad. And use my favorite new bug type frosmoth
Goddamn I sure do wish there were a way for me to finally play my Pokemon Nuzlocke with a well-groomed Ballsack. Good thing Jan's got me covered For real tho his sponsor transitions are godly they get me every time
There was a while in my White 2 casual play through that Galvantula had U-turn and Volt Switch so I could just yeet it out for free damage then have a flying Pokémon be immune to earthquake. That was a fun time
The way I did my Pokémon shield nuzlocke was that I put in a rule that the only encounters I could have were from raid dens After every gym I could use two raid dens to get my encounters That means that for my run I had only 16 Pokémon outside of my starter. Of those 16 Pokémon only 2 survived because of gym leaders bullshit gigantimax ohko’s
I liked Sobble. When I got him leveled up all the way to Inteleon he got this super awesome move called Snipe Shot. For a lot of his opponents, especially fire types, it was a one hit KO. And now that my Inteleon is at the eighties in terms of level there aren't a lot of opponents that present a threat to him.
@@KingRock9717 Ah Rillaboom. I fought him at the end during the fight against Leon. I'll admit he was tough but in all fairness grass types are strong against water types. I can't really remember the fight but I don't think I put my Inteleon up against Rillaboom
I didn't watch Young Yong's nuzlocke closely so I don't know if he tried this, but when I did my monobug SwSh run I had dual screens on Orbeetle. You can get it as soon as Blipbug evolves into Dottler, and a light clay is accessible early with the digging duo. It made a lot of fights, such as Raihan's and Kabu's, much more feasible.
Fun fact: in sword sobble is actually the best starter Kabu was essentially the first roadblock. Gordy can be swept with a single Pokémon Charizard. I don’t need to explain this
seriously, every video. like he heard the guy say he never did a nuz run before and that he never even played the game and he keeps pointing out failures like these two things arent facts about the current player hes watching..
@@cryofist Which might be weird, if this video was only about Young Yong. But it isn't. This video is meant to help people learn how to do better in their Nuzlockes, and playing around crits is a very important skill to learn in order to do that. Any chance of covering Griffin McElroy Pokemon Y nuzlocke from when he was on polygon? It's a long series, not just one video, but it's one of my faves. Its also his first ever nuzlocke. He does no items and to my knowledge doesn't overlevel (at least not enough for me to remember) so he's closer to the rules you use (but you're still the biggest alpha giga-chad nuzlocker, don't worry).
Okay... wobbabefet (whatever it's spelled) quick guide for all nuzlockers! These are my tips to survive these encounters. 1. Don't panic. 2. Avoid attacking. Sand attack, growl... whatever you do, don't attack. 3. The blue monster tries to use destiny bond because it's the fastest ko. Wait until it wastes it 5 times. 4. If you can't one shot it, try poison or leech seed. Destiny bond doesn't activate with passive damage so use it. 5. Remember that counter moves are effected by your stat changes. Lower the attack for the blob or something if you are scared. Check point 2. 6. If you can't knock it out any other way: waste turns until struggle. There we go. Your pokemon is alive and you can move on. Use repels to avoid these in future. :)

for real. Honestly I probably would've completely bombed my first nuzlocke without this guy's insight
Having someone react just makes it feel like it’s not just me listening to an animation but someone else seeing it along with me
Exactly! I also use it for my own nuzlockes and sometimes to get myself into the mindset with competitive, alongside with Wolfey
I’ve never seen anybody who embodies the “pushing up anime glasses” meme like Jan does
As both a huge Pokémon and Hollow Knight fan, the fact that my favourite Pokémon creator used Hollow Knight music in the background made me so so happy
Galvantula gets sticky web too
Centiscorch is pretty great since it can have the ability flash fire, it can learn coil pretty early, and when its all the way up lvl 53 it learns fire lash which always drops your opponents defense
While we're talking about fairy resisting bug. Why does ice only resist ice. Make it resist water/bug/ice/grass. Then it'd be a bit of a better type. Don't get me started on the steel resist psychic
Imagine if ice resisted dragon and grass. It'd be so much better
In my opinion ice should resist grass and fairy at the very least and also hit super effective on fairy, it makes logical sense with how winter makes nature less active
Ground mostly or even rock (bc glaciers can absolutely move mountains and actual ice irl is way stronger than most people think). Bug and grass need better type match ups to keep up
as well bc theyre really way too weak at the moment
Remove bug resist to fairy make it immune to dark types
Make grass immune to fairy n hit fairy for 2x damage
Ice should resist water n bug, grass, itself n dragon
Fire immune to steel
Fighting should resist steel
Game balanced right there
Upgrade base power of ghost moves
Introduce a dark weather effect to power up ghost and dark n bug
Fixed your game
@@nautgamingnautgaming9949 Way too many immunities and why in the living fuck would you buff ghost? It's the new gen 5 dragon type as is
I love your stance on how strict a 'real' Nuzlocke's rules have to be.
Absolutly true
That's my favourite part about Jan he has his preferred rules but says to pick whatever rules work.
@@cosmefulanito6854 Reminds me of years ago, can’t remember where but I remember watching a Nuzlocke series on RUclips where the person playing allowed themself to revive one pokemon after the 8th gym
I personally think it detracts from the point of nuzlockes, from a standpoint of both emotional detachment and challenge, but i also dont think its harming anyone so if people wanna do it thats cool
I appreciate your commentary. I’ve recently started my very first nuzlocke and watching stuff like this has helped me stay alive.

this is high quality.
The boss when you fight it vs. When you get it.
I feel obliged to be that one guy to point out that he started the animation with him carrying the Nezuko box on his back.
I caught that when he was pulling out Centiskorch and couldn't help but chuckle.
1:08 Jan: Is than me?
Also Jan: Just because they fucking wear glasses doesn’t mean it looks like me.
I low-key love the scene when the player and Hop fight against Gigantamax Eternatus and then the Sword and Shield Puppers come in and fuse with their respective rusty weapons. It’s just so cool to me.
The idea of a "type loyalty" run is pretty cool, honestly, and very fitting with the pokemon world we see in the games.
One time I was doing a sword nuzlocke, my starter died and I got so sad I played the game normally
9:03 I think youre 100% on the money Jan, its cry is literally a honking sound. i think its so adorable lol
Plus it becomes bus-sized when it’s Dynamaxed!
The only thing I hate about hustle Durant is that Durant can't learn Hone Claws in gen 8. I was gutted to find out my king couldn't learn hone claws even though it could back in older gens. Did my man's dirty
Wtf why
What moves does it benefit from Hone Claws off? (genuine q)
@@sweetwheatsy Hone Claws boosts accuracy which cancels the accuracy drop you get from Hustle

I don't get mad when creators pause the video they're reacting to and commentate because I'm here to listen to the creators input that's what a reaction is! Also, I like listening to your analysis on everything that happens as it's interesting, and it aids me as a pokemon player by learning new things!
Thought I’d like to throw out is that you mention after the Dragon Gym that protect is an option, but in Sword and Shield it’s optional at one of the tm shopkeepers in the pokecenters so it’s extremely easy to miss protect in these games, especially if going in blind like he did
Orbeetle getting love is one of my favorite things, he's so underrated. Used him on my first playthrough, and he's like a defensive Alakazam that you can get without trade evolutions, he's actually fantastic, only downside is a weaker typing
Lol the sponsor part caught me off guard 😆
28:32
For those who didn't notice (and I got very excited about this because she is amazing) Jaiden at this time stamp with her Blazakin (or Teriyaki) on the right corner in her pokemon platinum character
I would agree with Jan about the usually go for the fire starter. But galars 3rd gym literally makes you catch fire types.
Also the fire type in kanto is the worst for those who don't know about the game since the first two gyms wall charmander
2:05 LOL that sponsor segue was amazing lmao 😂
Segue
@@Fanimati0n apparently segue means he follows
Lmao I got so blindsided
This guy did a sick job with the animation. Really insane
Hear me out, Gaia for Zacian. Gaia the Furs Knight. No? Okay 😔
I'm currently playing through Renegade Platinum and catching and nicknaming everything. My proudest one is naming a Gulpin Freud.
General Cuatro didn't fit
are we just going to skip over the fact that Leon is the undefeated champion of the Galar region?? thats super important to know... that Leon is the undefeated champion of the Galar region.
Yo really?😮

Jan, wimpod may seem like a useless Pokémon, but if you get Golisopod, you are set for life, because of Golisopod’s first impression
Can't wait to see what new things I can learn from this video so I can finally continue putting off starting a nuzlocke
go do a Nuzlocke, _nerd_
This video made me realize that bug has somehow snuck its way into my top 3 types (dark and ice; fire and steel if we expand to 5). So many cool bug types have trickled in each gen that it's hard not to like them now.
I loved this nuzlocke. The plays could have been better in a few of the situations, but overall the animation was incredible and given the excellent selection of pokémon, this run was very fun to watch.
"aren't you sure your name isn't...KAREN" that made me spit my drink out
*"How strict is the nuzlocke community?"*
1: Thou shalt state thy rules before thy challenge.
2: Thou shalt abide by thy rules or thine runs art forfeit.
3: This shalt be the whole of the law.
(op starts praising his Joltik while Wobbuffet's silhouette stands menacingly)
Every Nuzlocker ever: "oh no."
Edit: I love using ice types.
It would have been easier if my dwebble and orbeatle had survived longer, but the extra challenge was also fun… also shuckle is probably the most important one to catch…
how did you get past raihan!! i kept wiping at his last two mons, with his gigalith and duraludon still standing..
@@jpegcrust getting very very lucky, and also using quiver dance on frosmoth, I somehow managed to get out of that one deathless.
shuckle the GOAT
What a legendary sponsor break holy shit this man is on another level
yeah
I kinda want to try a Twitter nuzloke of shield (only poison types) soon now thanks to this
I have to stop watching these animated nuzlockes, the endings make me cry every time
The only real issue with these animated nuzlockes is that we as an audience don't get to see if he's over leveled, using items, or playing on set for us to learn off of what he can do differently, other than that what a great video and fun run!
Some of these cut to gameplay occasionally.
Well many of these youtubers have already streamed the game like Jaiden, the animated video is just based on that.
@@user-uv2cp1qd1j And in the video, the animator shows the Crustle having taken about 50% damage and was level 50. If that's the case, then that's really impressive considering the Charizard is level 65. And then he probably was underleveled for the fight.
@@Rubywing4 fair enough my mistake

One thing about 8th gen is that max moves can't miss so having Hustle Durant as a max option is choice.

There was a while in my White 2 casual play through that Galvantula had U-turn and Volt Switch so I could just yeet it out for free damage then have a flying Pokémon be immune to earthquake. That was a fun time
I did the same for Black 2.
21:30 i loved how the houses that were destroyed in that xy cutscene you mentioned conveniently had not doors lol.
28:48 tyranitar with coverage obliterates his whole team unless you pick sobble
The way I did my Pokémon shield nuzlocke was that I put in a rule that the only encounters I could have were from raid dens
After every gym I could use two raid dens to get my encounters
That means that for my run I had only 16 Pokémon outside of my starter.
Of those 16 Pokémon only 2 survived because of gym leaders bullshit gigantimax ohko’s
This is top 10 sponser transitions of all time
For his first time playing Sword and being surprised so many times, he played really well
I liked Sobble. When I got him leveled up all the way to Inteleon he got this super awesome move called Snipe Shot. For a lot of his opponents, especially fire types, it was a one hit KO. And now that my Inteleon is at the eighties in terms of level there aren't a lot of opponents that present a threat to him.
Meet my Rillaboom.
@@KingRock9717 Ah Rillaboom. I fought him at the end during the fight against Leon. I'll admit he was tough but in all fairness grass types are strong against water types. I can't really remember the fight but I don't think I put my Inteleon up against Rillaboom
"Goliosopod"
Idc about pronunciation but this- thats a whole new pokemon

What I really like about sword and shield is that with the help of the wild area it makes mono type playthroughs really fun.
Jan is being so nice in this video what a cutie patootie 🥺

I didn't watch Young Yong's nuzlocke closely so I don't know if he tried this, but when I did my monobug SwSh run I had dual screens on Orbeetle. You can get it as soon as Blipbug evolves into Dottler, and a light clay is accessible early with the digging duo. It made a lot of fights, such as Raihan's and Kabu's, much more feasible.
22:36 i love when stories dont show things infinitely cooler than the stuff you get to see
Fun fact: in sword sobble is actually the best starter Kabu was essentially the first roadblock. Gordy can be swept with a single Pokémon Charizard. I don’t need to explain this
Holy smokes that sponsor transition almost killed me
My favorite part is trying to guess how many times he's going to say you need to play around Crits.
seriously, every video. like he heard the guy say he never did a nuz run before and that he never even played the game and he keeps pointing out failures like these two things arent facts about the current player hes watching..
@@cryofist Which might be weird, if this video was only about Young Yong.
But it isn't.
This video is meant to help people learn how to do better in their Nuzlockes, and playing around crits is a very important skill to learn in order to do that. Particularly so since so many people evidently don't realize it's even possible to play around crits.
This is educational, and examples assist education.
I’m happy with Jan’s choice of music! I heard he was playing hollow knight music.
Okay... wobbabefet (whatever it's spelled) quick guide for all nuzlockers!
IDK why people get mad at the pausing, I love it and the more detailed talk bits. Less chaotic.
I'm foreseeing a connected pokeverse where all of these amazing animators duke it out nuzlocke style for the entertainment of Poke Emperor Jan.
Dunno if you normally do this or if this is the first time, but it was awesome when the details for the move and ability you were talking about popped up for us pokemon noobs
That manscaped transition still gets me every time lmao
This man is the only reason why I am hesitant to start a nuzlocke okay
