  • I met with the fighting choreographer of the famous Dark Knight trilogy movie and got to experience Batman's fighting style and martial art first hand.

Welcome to the Martial Arts Journey RUclips channel!
My name is Rokas. I'm a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what it promises.
Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton.
After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my RUclips channel called "Martial Arts Journey".
Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries.

That's very interesting. It reminds me of a part of the first module I learned in the Ninjutsu school i was in. They were not related to Bujinkan and the method was very combat-oriented, at least it was when I was there. The first part taught basic techniques for kicking, punching, kneeing, and elbowing, as well as a little bit of ground game, always using natural movements and close proximity to the body. Advanced students, like myself, would often practice 1v2 and 1v3 fights, and I even had a 1v6 fight against some non-graduated students using gloves and shin pads when i was graduating to see how much we could endure. Unfortunately, I moved but now train in MT and BJJ, and everything I learned from Senju Kabe has been very useful, even against pro athletes. I would say that style can be very effective with the right foundation.

For discussions sake I will add, however, that I have never been a fan “self defense systems.” I’m not talking about keysi specifically here, but in general I find they tend to fall into the same traps as traditional martial arts. Those are an over-reliance on “dirty fighting” (biting, attacking the groin and eyes, etc.), overestimating the damage your techniques will do (“here I break his rib, then I snap his wrist, then I crush his trachea!”), and then not doing enough live drilling and hard sparring because “our techniques are too deadly.”

I remember training with one of the stuntmen from that era Batman - Keysi/DLs is an interesting approach for sure, modified JKD with some cool looking techniques, good emphasis on aliveness in the drills. Nice narrative to the vid.

It has been a long time since I read the comics but the main martial arts was karate, jujitsu, kick boxing which is surprisingly like MMA fighting. Later they seemed to add kung-fu, Ninja training but for some reason by someone living in Korea, and as it seemed needed. But you can tell a lot of it was what current MMA fighting is like.

That´s all fine and dandy, too bad you can´t see any of this in the movies, because Chr. Nolan used that crappy Mid-00´s "Shakycam & 400 quick cuts per minute"- style. The hand-to-hand combat fight scenes in Nolan´s trilogy are absolutely horrendously filmed & edited.

I like this. That you learned this particular nugget of wisdom.
"It's not inspiration that'll get you to where you want to go. It's discipline. Because inspiration can only get you so far."
Same shit with my Bboying. I've taught many, and so many people get inspired to try it. More than half of them drop out because they don't have the discipline to keep going even during the low points of their journey. In battles, they're inspired to try and win, but not disciplined enough to keep going when they're losing.
I keep telling them to learn the discipline of consistency and perseverance. Very few do because they throw their hands up when it's Life that comes at them.

In regard to self defense against multiple opponents in a confined space scenario, I found the high and dynamic head defense, quick series of elbow spear attacks, grabs and non-linear hammer fists as well as the constant level changes a fine way to proceed. It creates a lot of chaos and informational overload and helps to push through with fewer harms on your side. The training doesn’t neglect the fitness element and will introduce a high amount of pain tolerance too. Just prepare for some bruising on your forearms and wear a mouth guard during training.

The creation mythos of its founders is a bit sketchy - it’s rather a reduced and focused Silat or Panantukan syllabus than a new invention or ziganes style, but I will admit that these techniques might have come around quite a bit and might have found their way into Roma fighting styles as well. I would be eager to learn a bit more about its lineage, but never came close to Justo or Andie to ask them in private.
