Hi and thanks for the info. I am planning to install kitchen cabinets in my newly built house. I quite like darker colours. Will either go for black or a dark green called fairoaks. Quite like the high gloss in 2 pac with profile design on kitchen cabinets. My question is, is it a good idea to go for high gloss with 2 pac profile? Will it be a too glossy kitchen? I like the the elegant look. What would you suggest?
Two different types of acrylic; 1) Solid acrylic all the way thru. CRAZY expensive. 2) Acrylic lay over MDF substrate, which is much more common. The finish is totally dependent on the fabricator. And don't be too quick to shit on Ikea. Their thermofoil, which is normally considered semi-crap, is probably the best in the business for its price range. Personally, I prefer acrylic over mdf. Best compromise of them all.
Well who ever did that precat lacquer finish didn’t know what he was doing, so you showing bad example here my friend , lacquered finish when done right is like glass with nice clean reflection, also no visible edgebanding on doors etc
Hey Mathew, I have question. I like that third option the shimmering one to go with sliding and a pocket doors for my home. If I go to Home Depot and buy a new door (no holes, and no paint) and want that acrylic finish you mention. How do I obtain that?
Leandro dos Santos Metódio Lopes I can send you a 3/4” thick panel to match the dimension of your door. You’d simply have to attach to the current pocket door, with some modifications I’m sure.. but send you a panel is simple :)
Your catalysed lacquer example is a very poor representation. Firstly you can see it's not the best of attempts anyway. Secondly to achieve a high gloss finish the lacquer would need to be sanded and burnished (polished) to get to high gloss. This would all be done by a professional refinisher and you would have a completely different end result so your comparison is hardly a fair one
the face of the board wasnt even sanded to start with. Its the same result you get on a car paint job. If your surface isnt straight, its not gonna look good in the end.
keviL what kind of protective foil? We are getting ready to sell the house and I sure would love to know about this. I have no wear or tear...but lots of continual smudges.

I wish you were in Houston. It’s hard to get modern kitchens for under $100K installed
Do you know what scavolini uses?
The same products we all use 😬

Not only that, but how many coats? Was it sanded between coats? Was it buffed out? I am gonna bet one coat with zero sanding and buffing....,

Pros nd cons of hi gloss cabinets
Have em....hate em. They show fingerprints. Unless you have a kitchen and don't use it, I would never go this route.
Izzaboutchu! If you did thermofoil, yup!
You can put a clear protective film over it. Not only it will protect the door from scratch, food, name it... but also fix your issue.
