I’ve been in antidepressants for over 20 yrs. I started vitamin B complex 15 yrs ago. It made a massive difference. Vitamin D and iron with vitamin C and fish oil also make a big difference with my adhd. Consistent exercise, sleep and good diet is also a must.

@RUclipsPurgetheblackplagu Why did your doctors tell you to stop? Be careful with iron. It is possible to ingest too much, and develop iron toxicity or iron overload. That is one of the reasons why my doctor asks for me to have blood work every 3 months as they try to treat my anemia...to make sure I improve, but don't overload on iron.

You are an American, but your English accent suits the Asians. I have seen many videos of other Americans and Britishers where they talk with such speed and variations in tone intensity, which makes it difficult to understand. What I found in your videos is that you are clear and crisp, you convey your message clearly and sharply, and you talk with a constant tone and speed. You explain simplistically like you are a teacher of primary school children. That makes you my favourite.

That's what I was thinking, that the inflammation from a lot of our foods and some other factors could be causing the depression in the first place. It's kind of like the cause of not drinking enough water that makes you feel like crap and sluggish. They're all connected, especially to your mental/ brain health.

Great video today, as always, and a relevant topic to me. I found out I had low B12. My diet wasn't up to par. I started supplementing B12 per doc's orders and I noticed an uptick in energy. I also supplement, on my own accord, with the bioavailable form of Folate. I would say the difference after adding the Folate, was less impressive than when first adding the B12 in terms of energy increase and working memory.

My doctor suggested Blood Builder for iron/B12 and it worked well but my levels still weren't as high as they should be. I added 2000 mg sublingual B12 on top of that about a year ago and it seriously changed my life. SSRIs still don't work for me but my energy levels, body aches and memory have noticeably improved. I'm not vegan but do eat meat only a few times a week and didn't realize that wasn't enough. I'd love to see a video on your thoughts on N-acetyl cistine. Naltrexone and Biupropion together helped me lose weight after having my baby I didnt lose weight for 3 years. Im short 5'2 i went up to 180lb My kid is 4 now. Im down to 130 in a 8 months. I dont feel startved. Just a person on a journey to have a regular day like everyone else.
So I take these vitamins and yesterday I was full of energy. I made day of the dead bread trial run for the actual day. I was very focused and less on edge and angry. I dont really drink coffee because its a gateway for me to drink alcohol. I will use coffee to exhaustion, then energy drinks and then alcohol down the line. Idk why. Maybe im trying to do as much as I can before the deep depression sers in and I cant get out of bed.

Some of us have a bad gene on the MTHFR pair that means that we can't use folate from dietary sources. Unfortunately, this isn't routinely tested for. I know because if you're a woman who has had issues with initiating or maintaining pregnancy, you get tested. Anyway, if you have this genetic mutation, you need to supplement with l-methylfolate. Given that a lot of folks never learn that they have this mutation, I wonder whether some of the people who present as medication resistant actually have the inability to use folate from diet anyway.

I recently took a course in metabolic psychiatry/metabolic ketogenic therapy, an emerging field in psychiatry, that views mental health disorders as metabolic disorders. Essentially, mental health disorders are looked as "inflammation" in the brain. I can attest to this as I have been able to put an antidepressant induced bipolar in remission, after 13 years of struggling through a holistic approach, but mainly with ketogenic nutritional therapy. The ketogenic diet has over 100 years of scientific research as treatment for Epilepsy. I believe inflammation and oxidative stress is a culprit in many illnesses and I'm not surprised it is partly the case with depression. Thank you for sharing and raising awareness about this.

One thing I'm confused about is that you state L-methylfolate is available by prescription in the US. However, I see it for sale OTC online by many supplement companies. Is there something different about the OTC and prescription versions (other than the prescribed version is made in a pharmaceutical grade facility that meets FDA standards)?

I agree with your observation. Antidepressants do not work for everyone. Some people cannot tolerate them and others prefer not to be on them due to terrible side effects. And at the best of times their success rate is low. Something like 30-40%. So there needs to be additional interventions explored with patients. That's such a terrible way to treat someone who is already down, it's like kicking them while they're on the ground. Psychiatric medications do not work for everyone - some people cannot tolerate them, others get horrific side effects, and yet many more prefer not to be on them. There's a huge non-compliance issue in psychiatry, not because those medications work for everyone and they're great. Even at the best of times, they work partially - 30-40% of the time.
People who are "treatment resistant" which by the way is the wrong label to put on anyone. The question is why are these medications not working for them? And what else can be explored that would make a difference for them? What can we do to alleviate your suffering if this doesn't work? What else can be done? what else? what else?
That takes curiosity, time, patience, persistence, hope, integrity, and compassion. It's easy to label someone "treatment resistant" and wash your hands off of their care. How do you sleep at night with yourself when you know your client is still deeply suffering? How awful and dehumanizing!
There's so much that can be explored to help a human being. There is always hope for everyone. No one is hopeless. No one should have to battle mental illness on their own. Certainly they don't need a final judgement and left to their own devices.
How are you doing now? What supports do you have in place to look after yourself? Do you have access to a mental health advocate? Or more compassionate mental health professionals? Best regards,

@@sunkat76 It's because psychiatrist go to school for 13 years, first 8 years to medical school, and then residency for 5 years and get zero training on nutrition. The Hippocratic oath all physicians/psychiatrist take says "I will use those dietary regimens which will benefit my patients according to my greatest ability and judgment, and I will do no harm or injustice to them." This is the oath from the Greek physician Hippocrates, who is considered the "father of modern medicine".
Everyone talks about "do not harm" but no one talks about what comes before that. He knew nutrition was important even back then. I was on antidepressants for a lot of years and at first they worked
Then they weren’t working the same I was getting suicidal thoughts and my family thought I wasn’t taking my medication when I was
Then my doctor suggested vitamin B12 and it worked it helped me a lot he also recommended fish oil
I stopped medication now and although I still suffer from anxiety I feel it a lot less than when I was on SSRIs…. I also take Gabba and magnesium
My question is is their a vitamin that increases seretonin

I hope I'm understanding this correctly - so 15mg of Folic Acid would be the equivalent of a prescription L-methylfolate?
Too bad i watched this moments AFTER my monthly medication management appointment, otherwise I could've requested a Rx for it!

Anyone able to find a source that clarifies in what regard is B12 deficiency is masked when taken together? Is it that the labs come back artificially elevated to the normal range when taken together if you're deficient or is it symptoms of B12 deficiency? I can't seem to find any source that clarifies which marker of B12 deficiency is masked when taken with L-methylfolate.

Hi Dr. Tracey! I loved the video. But I have a question: is vitamin B6 also effective against depression, since it’s important to the production of serotonin?

You need to balance out B12 and B6. I was told too much of one will cause too little of the other. So keep an eye on both.

@@Catlily5 yes and too much B6 can cancel out B2. best to keep at same but if you check the label on B complex ensure the dosage for B2 is the same as B6 not all complexes are the same. I only take B6 for 2 days before period if very teary but then I stop.
