    If you can always put your jars upside down and that prevents any air from getting to the inside of the jar. Just a tip I have heard for many years and it seems to work well.

    • @portugalitis
      @portugalitis  3 месяца назад

      Yes I do know that and you need to do it when you fill them up or when you take them from hot water bath .. to keep them upside down for 12 hours at least so then they create the pressure tight thingy .. or how you say it .. afterwards you don't need to put upside down :)

    You guys always maintain an up-beat disposition so I feel a bit bad saying that I am sad....🐣🐔
    Whilst one has to respect nature & its natural recourses, the knock-on results of international climatic conditions are evidentiary and it does effect all levels of habitation - sea, land, atmospheric, creatures great & small. Hence my admiration (envy) for your choices of going off-grid. I would if I could!

    Sorry to hear about the poor little chicken and the chicken that stopped sitting.😥🐔
    Those stones from the neighbors are pretty nice, several flat sided ones and a stone for a shelf . 'G's kitchen will be finished before you know it.🫖🥞
    Oh 'G', your roses are so beautiful. I bet they have a wonderful fragrance, too. 🌹🌹🌹
    Have you both given anymore thought about the pond (the big white square structure)? It sure would make for a nice big bathroom with a tub and shower.🚿🚽
    Just a suggestion . . . Andrius, please wear a 'weight lifting belt'. Wearing it will remind you to use your core muscles and it will save your back, too.🏋‍♀
    Sending hugs and love to you all, especially Guffy 🐶🐾and his new haircut.
    PS. The arched stone would make a niffy doggie and cat door, or perhaps the top of a window frame.🪟

    The field wouldnt be a desert if you didnt cut it back so hard,its no doubt been treated badly for years, it needs to be covered, mother nature doesn't like being naked. In autumn plant a cover crop and leave it until it dies back naturally before fire season..or completely cover the whole thing in old hay/straw/manure..it desperately needs biomass..in a few years of doing the same thing you will have plantable soil. My land was very similar,previous owner was a weedkiller afficionado,year after year he sprayed everything that tried to live,except the orange trees..4.5 years on, our soil is recovering..with loads of horse manure/straw/hay and some seed.

    • @portugalitis
      @portugalitis  3 месяца назад +5

      Hi Fiona .. we planning to do swells this autumn and just work on it ... They do like to use weedkiller here .. I don't get it why??? it's toxic and kills everything .. bees and plans and without bees we won't have anything and plus then they eat them vegetables .. horrible .. well done with your hard work !!! I am sure when we will have more time to focus on it we will do better improvements as well as we want to plant there nut trees and more olives

    • @fionaworrell4535
      @fionaworrell4535 3 месяца назад +3

      @portugalitis the Portuguese people did what they were told by short sighted governments, we need to remember its only a few years since we all learnt how toxic and dangerous these chemicals actually are. Do you remember how you found out? Its not the kind of information shared on TV or in media here,so many, particularly elders still don't know. Though many suspect as they continue to loose loved ones to various horrible diseases. They still don't have access to education on the alternatives.

      I think Steve & Debi will let you have as much of their straw and other plant waste if ever you want some to lay cover over the soil in your desert field. 😊

    You might consider removing the eucalyptus trees. The go up like candles if there is a fire

    • @portugalitis
      @portugalitis  3 месяца назад +4

      eucalyptus is beautiful tree plus we can use his wood for building and log burner and the sound it makes when it's windy .. feels like you next to the ocean .. so no we won't be removing them .. you just need to take care of them and clean .. and to remove them we would need BIG machines and it would cost thousands ... which we don't have :)

    • @ruthconstantino6861
      @ruthconstantino6861 3 месяца назад +2

      You did a great job cleaning up your eucalyptus grove!
      Raised in crunchy, often droughty California, i also can attest eucalyptus can explode like bombs when they catch fire.
      Once near where i worked 1 great tree exploded from just the ambient heat of the air during one scorchy summer. None of us knew they were so volatile before. We have scads of 100+ y.o. old trees scattered throughout the state that are fodder for worry in hot summers as well as for fire.
      That said, i can understand your love of the sound of the wind passing through the leaves, having their shade, and their providing practical purpose as bug-resistent, dense, building material.
      Maybe burn as many of their dead leaves when & while you can bc they don't decompose well and remain a fire hazard. They also acidify soil. Hope this is helpful info.

    • @portugalitis
      @portugalitis  3 месяца назад +1

      Oh wow the can explode??? this is scary .. Now I take it back I like them ;) maybe we need to cut the old ones and leave the thin ones .. I though compost from them is good that's why I left them there to rot ... maybe I will cover them with something so they will decompose faster .. I wasn't aware about acidify factor ... we could use soil to plant blueberries then and one of my favourite flowers - rhododendron .. Thank you for the Info Ruth xxx

      You're welcome, G. You can Google exploding eucalyptus tre in San Mateo County, California -- i think it happened in the 1990s. Srsly, at the tine no one knew how combustible they were and how hot they burn bc their full of eucalyptus oil. I think Google can point to articles on the affect they have on soil -- they are an aggressive species that choke out other competitive plant species. They defend themselves from bugs which maybe why they're oil is used in over the counter medicine remedies and cleansers 🤷🏻‍♀️ and why their wood make terrific beams and posts.

    • @ruthconstantino6861

      Use your big ones for building material.
      Oh and they're hard to kill. My mom had one chopped down in our yard. The stump kept sending up new shoots and branches and the root would start new trees nearby. I'm not a fan 😂.

  • @davidstoddard9160

    It looks really nice where the forest was cleared, but I wonder if removing all the leaves, will allow the soil to be washed away in very hard rains. I would suggest some concern how to stop soil erosion from occuring.

    • @portugalitis
      @portugalitis  3 месяца назад +1

      You might be right .. and t will happy I think but the leaves will cover the soil again soon as this is second time I done it already ..

    • @ruthconstantino6861
      @ruthconstantino6861 3 месяца назад +1

      No, you don't want eucalyptus leaves to accumulate as they're highly flammable and also acidic to the soil. They should be burned when & where safe.
      Some other mulch would be better?
      And you're right, the grove will be full again with leaves. Our neighbor 2 houses up from us has like a 75yo eucalyptus. I like tgat raccoons used to nest there, but the winds blow from the Pacific Ocean inland, sending his dead eucalyptus leaves cascading into our yard 🙄. With all i do to tend to my elderly and accident-prone parent + a playful asthmatic cow kitty, i can only manage to sweep up debris twice a year! But i need to clean up more often during hot weather so our house doesn't burn if them leaves ever catch fire. 😒 --- 🍂

      I went to Portugal in like 1988 or 89. In a tour we were told Portugal moved to plant eucalyptus for building material and to make paper so they wouldn't be reliant on other countries' timber for paper 🤷🏻‍♀️. Of course, us nobodies knew nothing about the world would get warmer with all the dumb thing we humans were doing then.

    Sorry about losing your chicken. There are things to deter a fox, including male urine - so mark your territory Andrius. Or, you can buy (expensive) predator urine like mountain lion/panther etc. Now, getting your neighbor to mark their territory -- well... You'll need to confine your chicken's from roaming too far away too.
