And now when I do get time to sit down with my bros and play I genuinely enjoy it. I found myself when I was playing all day to dread the game and my life. I’ve fallen out of love with video games, however my life has improved dramatically when i reduced my video game consumption. Throughout the week, I’m working and improving myself. I work on my side hustle on the weekend as well.
I have a friend in a different country and we play the game together sometimes on the weekend, But we still talk throughout the week about deep topics regarding masculinity, reading, improvement stoicism etc. he actually introduced me to Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations.
I do agree that video games need to go. But I don’t agree that you need to cut out every fun thing in someone’s life. As he said, just don’t get addicted. My step brothers are addicted and justify not going to the gym and playing video games. I feel for them.

I usually agree a lot with you, but as much as games can consume your life, they won't necessarily do so. I see several people who yes, do get addicted and wake up and go to sleep playing video games all day. I used to compare what I thought was playing a lot and then got to see people with 10s of times more play time on a game than I do on total.
But the problem doesn't lie in the hobby of gaming, it lies in someone not administrating the time in their lives. Not all hobbies are necessarily productive or will produce something from their development, not every single of your waking hours are spent on some kind of productive activity.
To me, it seems that you've come to resent gaming, probably as your experience (and maybe the spoken experiences of others) with games was really poor, be it from the kind of games you played or why and how you played them.
For example, many people play games just to fill in time. That's unproductive and unfulfilling, so if someone had a habit of playing games for the sake of spending time away, no wonder they will resent it when they quit and start doing productive things. Maybe you had a similar experience, I don't know, but it seems that whatever your experience was with gaming, you didn't do it for fun or a passion at all.
I've had deep conversations within games, I've made great friends when playing games who I carried into adulthood, I've seen streamers talk about life experiences in game together, I've seen people comment on extracted life lessons they needed to have from playing a game, and so much more.
So overall, you speak as if there is only one kind of experience to gaming, but from my (and many others) lived experience, yours on this subject is very limited.
Nobody should agree with every single thing someone says, and if they do, they have either not heard much, or they aren't living their own life. From how adamant you feel about this and how confident you are about it, despite being so contradicting with my experience, it definitely makes me start questioning other advice as well

Coming from someone who is big into self-improvement, it’s ok to take some time out of your day for some pleasure, solely for the sake of pleasure.
Embracing delayed gratification is an important part of self-improvement, but like anything else, it can be pushed too far. Not everything has to be about productivity. Idk man. Video games are a form of art. Like it depends on the game and how much time you spend doing it, but saying there’s nothing positive about games is like saying there’s no value in film or fiction. People showing their creativity and inspiring others is a net positive in my opinion. Personally I’ve always been the type to just blast through single player games and just enjoy the story and world building and music etc. and then not touch another game for weeks or months until something else catches my interest. They’re just like interactive movies with branching story lines and more details to see. I can better understand your perspective based on multiplayer games cuz those often feel like unsatisfying time sinks but even then I love a good historical fps that can make me feel immersed in a certain setting. If it’s no good for you I get it and not everything you say is wrong and it’s worth reflecting on and considering but at the end of the day it’s art and with moderation I wouldn’t call it a vice and I even think it can be somewhat of a positive thing.

I only play single player games, that way I can stop and start whenever I want. I think I have found a good balance with them.
Yes, at the end of the year I’ve probably spent about 200 or so hours playing them. Yes that’s a lot of time. But it’s time I’m willing to spend playing them because that is the 20% that gives me the 80% of joy. Im willing to sacrifice growth in those 200 hours for some instant gratification.

The characters in these games were a massive reason why I started lifting weights and working out seriously a few years ago. Playing DMC inspired me to lose 60 (220 to 160) pounds because I wanted to be like the main characters, and now I am in great health. fr video games are a work of art for me and an inspiration for my own work and such.. I actually value the time I spend on it and it''s okay IMO just if you don't spend 10000 hours on league and you don't actually enjoy it ngl
We humans see everything as stories and these books, movies and even video games are like that and a work of art we can appreciate.
IMO Hamza is generalizing too much. He thinks everyone is like him and views it like him. He sees his younger self, but the same advice is not for everyone. Don't tell someone they can't just because you couldn't. I think that if you don't enjoy it and still waste time of it, it's a waste of time.
Some for example actually like spending 1000 hours on something and honing their skills in video games. Whilst others (like me) are there for the relationships the stories to be told and lore to be explored.
There are many different kinds of gamers though and this is where I don't know what my point is.
My take is that if you enjoy it and it does NOT take over your life and stops you from doing the things you actually want please go ahead. If you have the feeling that you are wasting time than there is a high chance you are.
Although, I don't know if everyone CAN have a healthy relationship with video games. But at least I know I have, and I can. so yeah

Here's my thoughts. I play Minecraft. I used to be a much larger Jeffrey, playing minigames and other games as well, and even Minecraft for like 10 hours a day. I used to play it until 4 or 5 am pretty much every day. I still play it, but I interact with it in a healthier way now. My sleeping habit is regular: I go to sleep at 10 and wake up at 7. In terms of my self improvement journey, I've added on one habit every month to break or gain, that I'd keep doing after the month has passed, and I've done that for a few months now. Stopping video games is far down my list, but it's in the 2022 category. I think that I interact with Minecraft in a semi-healthy way because I like to build complex structures and manage resources. I can confidently say that it has definitely made me more creative and look at things in a different way. I will admit that I play it for 3 or 4 hours every day. However, I understand that it's something that I should stop, as it gives me false gratification and purpose, is very stimulating, and takes up a lot of my focus. I'm planning on transitioning off of Minecraft onto other productive hobbies like coding, but I think I should have it after I have a lot of good stable habits woven into my routine, so I don't feel suddenly deprived and break all of them.

I can quit all gaming, and I likely will when I have a job or full time education. If you want to fully erase it, the deletion process is just an email away. Im definitely not addicted i can go months without playing them, i only play with my friends or story driven games on my own sometimes, but im never spending more than 3 hours max on a game. The friends I have that play video games are some of the coolest people ive met. Hard working, humble, we always have deep conversation, we uplift each other we go to the gym together. This is probably because most of my friends are muslim so naturally we are always looking to improve ourselves and are all on this self improvement journey. I feel like the video game bad argument can apply to alot of people that are not of faith or people with just little to no self control in general (which can also apply to people of faith). For these type of people then yes i somewhat agree with you that they will probably have to let go of video games to actually progress, but alot of people can balance this and still get far. My friends and family are proof of this and alot of my cousins and friends are doing well for themselves mentally and physically but they still play video games. About 3 years ago, I started looking into aviation and was fascinated with all the buttons 12 year old me saw on the flight deck, so I asked my parents for a flight simulator and they agreed. I read through manuals, watched videos, hours of trial and error just to learn how to even play the flight simulator and fly the plane. I do however classify it as a game, it does give me alot of overstimulation. Fast forward 3 years, I have decided to pursue an airline career as flying jets TRULY makes me happy, I can save 2k on flight classes due to my prior knowledge which came from video games/ flight sims. However i think this falls more into the category of an esports player that hamza said as they worked on the game and practiced more than they played, which was my case. I don't really play flight sims that much anymore as i have learned the basics and have admitted to myself that i am no longer learning anything new, just flying planes for fun since i have learned a great amount of aviation. About 3 years ago I found someone that was a lot like me. I was really lonely so he was my first friend and we played everyday pretty much for about a year. We were going to the same school everyday it was really fun. I think during that first year we had a group we would walk with at school during breaks and some people from that group started playing games too with us. And we played regularly during those times too. This last summer, I played every night for about 3-6 hours with the "first friend". To be honest I don't really regret it too much. We had a lot of fun. I think Hamza played games where you rarely interact with people. I was playing csgo and it's pretty fun to mess around, troll, have fun and also be somewhat competitive. I have a lot of fun memories from it. But I found hamza at the end of December. I didn't play as much with my friend after that summer because I have to commute a long time to uni and I don't really feel like playing competitive games even though I found them really fun. So I went from playing everyday to once a week. And yesterday I played again from a 2 week break. I really didn't want to. I kind of hated the idea. I kinda felt forced to cause I was playing every week but I didn't for 2 so I was like, ok maybe I should play and socialise with my friends a bit. It was a lot of fun and genuine laughter during that time. I suggest if you're like me (introverted) and you don't mind talking to the group chat daily instead of playing games daily with them, do it once a week. You will see the beauty in taking the break and also the beauty in having fun with your group. I do also want to get my first friend onto self improvement once I believe I am good enough myself.

I feel like this is more of an attack on instant-gratification overstimulants rather than just videogames. Not every game is league of legends, or dota, or some game meant to suck as much of your time and money as possible while only engaging your brain in unhealthy and addicting ways. There are definitely games like that, and a lot of people are addicted to them and need help to pull themselves out of the hole they’ve dug themselves into. I know people like that, that spend all day doing nothing but overstimulating their brain, and it’s sad. It’s the same thing as guy coming home to spend 4 hours wasting their time on tiktok or porn or some shit. Those are the people I think hamza is talking to here. But not every game is like that, so I think it’s unfair to demerit games as an entire medium. This goes for other things too - a person watching breaking bad and reading Don Quixote is not going to get the same experience as a person watching the shitty full house reboot and reading trashy romance novel. Arguing that playing any game, no matter what it is, is bad, is the same thing as arguing against any other piece of media as well. So of course I agree that the people who spend 8 hours a day playing leave with cheeto dust coating their room need serious fucking help, but not every game is league and not everyone who plays games is a cheeto dust-covered loser.

Can you name a single video game that doesn't rely solely on the overstimulation and instant gratification?
Also from a bio-med sci point of view, TV is a fundamentally different reaction centre in the brain, video games are a whole other league of problem compared to TV. TV is by and large a non-issue, and doesn't trigger the same cycles of hundreds of hours a fortnight in an addictive slump, although very rarely it can.

I feel like people who mostly play multiplayer shooters and shit don’t really comprehend that other games exist lol (not assuming you are one of those people, just wanted to make a generalization). I agree with most things said here; however, I don’t hold such an extreme view against video games.
Firstly there’s a distinction between the types of games you’re playing. Some games are really addictive and play a negative role in peoples lives. Games like CSGO, COD, GTA online, Battlefield hold very little value and drain both your time and money. Also, these are the worst games for socialization.
On the other hand, plenty single player games, and games like Minecraft can be calming and educational in some aspects. Especially if you’re younger (young teens and less) I don’t see the harm in playing these non-predatory games.
I don’t play games anymore, not out of a hatred for games, but I just kind of got bored of them as I got a bit older (I’m 17 now turning 18 soon). I’ve made genuine friends and had genuine conversations over video games. They are fun and as a kid you should be enjoying your childhood. But, I’ve also faced the predatory practices of games (I’ve spent a lot of money).
Tbh, video games could be treated as any another media like TV, reading, or music, but it’s something that most people get out of naturally. What’s worse than video games imo are the mindless social media feeds on tiktok, instagram, RUclips. I have a little brother And I’d much rather see him having fun on ps4 and his vr with his friends genuinely having fun than him mindlessly scrolling through Tiktok.

From someone who’s gone through the same journey, I 100% agree with Hamza. I used to be an absolute addict but I was consciously aware that this isn’t right and that is key to fixing and problem in life. You can’t make up excuses for it. If you’re gonna do it, do it while admitting that you’re wrong. The way I eventually fixed my problem was by deciding to take a clean 3months break. And I promise you life hasn’t ever felt any better. And I’m telling you that it will be hard, but only for the first month. Once you breakthrough that first month, you’ll look back and spit on your old self cuz u will now be so proud of yourself cuz you’re actually building yourself up in those hours that you used to waste. And that’s not to say that you will never get to play. I may play with some old mates once every month or so, but whenever I’m not playing I don’t think about the game and I’m not feeling bad for not playing. And that’s ultimately how you gain control over yourself. The amount of discipline it will take of you to break that bad habit will be huge. But once you do it you will truly be able to achieve anything you put ur mind into. Keep going legends 👊

I watched your entire video but I can't say I fully agree. There are many nuggets of truth in your statements, but some subjective oversights. If someone is the type to mindlessly consume video games for hours on end then they will mindlessly consume any form of entertainment they replace it with, regardless of how productive said activity may or may not be. The issue then lies with the person. I have been a gamer since a young child.
Education is quite low where I am from (school districts are poor, not much academic reinforcement in most homes, drugs, broken families, etc) but I never struggled because gaming taught me to read back when most rpgs were text based cause the studios weren't big enough to hire voice casts. I was in 3th or 4th grade reading Shakespeare out a high school textbook.
Gaming gave me a love of history playing all the old medieval games or stuff like early god of war causing me to read up on my greek mythos to understand whats going on.
I once played a game called cellcraft that taught me all about the anatomy of a cell several YEARS before I ever learned it in school.
My "gaming friends" at one point in my youth were all very mature people in their 30's and 40's. They kept me out of alot of the trouble young ppl get themselves into otherwise.
I could go on but I hope you see my point is there is alot to be gained from ANY form of entertainment as long as you are in the mindset to learn from it. If you are of the mindset to waste time, then you will waste time - even if the activity is deemed to be productive.
How many people played sports all their life and ended up getting injured or quitting and getting fat?
How many people decided to go out make "real friends" and ended up in gangs or with a bunch of children or worse?
How many people went the gym instead and ended up juiced out on steriods?
The idea of only ever being productive and never seeking that quick dopamine rush is more unrealistic than me being an esports player, truth is we must all pick our poison and live with the pros/cons.

Even as a gamer (which sounds so stupid to me), I have to agree: I agree with you because there are so many men (a whole squad I used to play with) who would play video games almost everyday, and they would go to bars and spend essentially all of their cash (they bragged about being broke, and then bragged about faking being broke to get a free game from the GF who later cheated on them, but, they saw their GF as a "Sex toy", it's a long story, but that's all in a nutshell). While I've tried to get them unto no-fap and to help improve their confidence, they would just refuse, they would directly refuse, even when they know it's bad. I've had to leave that squad because they started attacking me and mocking me constantly.
That was two years ago, sadly, I'm literally stuck inside my house, I can't go to school in-person, I'm still trying to get more social via in real life, however, I can't. However, I understand why videos can (and mostly are) bad when you don't highly restrict it. While I still play, I'm trying to slowly phase it out (and I made a lot of quick progress), in the span of two weeks, I've went from playing 6-12 hours a week to 2-5 hours (and only in the weekend). I'm planning on taking a two week break so that I can just focus on exercise and reading books and mediating (it'll probably be next week on accident).
My advice, I don't really know, the only example I can think of as "Good" videos games would be simulations, but then again, maybe your just wasting time if your not going to apply those skills you've learned in those simulations, and even then, the simulation is just step 1 at most, at some point, you've got to go to step 2 (which is reading and watching RUclips videos around that subject). I would say if I was a father, I would probably only allow my child to play Strategy games and puzzle games for like 1 hour after they complete their homework, but then again, that puts it into the mindset that the games is a reward, and that the work is like a punishment. I don't want to become an authoritarian ass hole as a parent, I don't know, I'll try to just focus on myself.

I actually play a lot of Simulation video games, specifically X-Plane and a few others.
I feel that yes, you are indeed true with many aspects, I stream a lot of these flights I do on X-Plane or Cities Skylines. Yes it is bad for your mental health.
Truthfully speaking, flight simulations and Cities skylines among others have taught me a lot, specifically flight simulation which taught me how to fly planes and read charts that would otherwise seem stupid to many people who aren't interested in planes.
To be honest with you, a lot of when I spend my time on these long flights I do is actually off stream, I tend to spend more of my time with family and even phoning people.
Otherwise, I would have probably given up on video games as a whole anyways. Besides, I have been watching a lot of documentries and funny that, a lot of the people who I mention the documentries are probably not really interested but there is a chance for me to speak to them, and they atleast appreciate that I am with them simply because a huge part of their time is spent with a lot of difficulty like relationships and so on.
Some people embrace difficulty and get onto simulations since these are actually simulating real life events, such as flying a plane. So you actually have to start up the plane like they (Pilots) do in real life.
These games aren't built to have fun but rather to embrace difficulty, I have met many people who embrace difficulty like myself and they are probably the best people I speak to on discord.

I think that's too extreme, I have spend months at a time not playing any video game, and that didn't inherently improved my life, it just increased the time I spend doing other things like watching youtube.
I do think that if you play video games but you don't even go to the gym, you have your priorities wrong, but being against entertainment altogether isn't a reasonable position to take, I do think it's too much to play everyday, but a couple times a week, or a couple weekends a month seems perfectly healthy if you at the very least have job and go to the gym every week. Life is too harsh to never have the time to sit down and enjoy a movie, or watch an interesting documentary, listen to a good audiobook, or play a video game, having guilt free fun is also important along as you also have other more meaningful hobbies like going to the gym, learning languages or acquiring marketable skills.

I think telling people to log how long they actually play video games might be an effective way of showing them their problem. They'll be forced to acknowledge they don't actually 'just play 1 hour' and maybe they'll realize the extent of their addiction.
Furthermore, though it would be best for someone to stop playing cold turkey, I don't think this is very realistic for most, just like NoFap. Playing less and less over time might be more realistic and effective advice.
Finally, if someone's friend group only consists of gamers it will be *very* hard for that person to quit no matter what. It's also hard to solve that issue because they'll be unlikely to want to search out new friends in that position. Maybe your discord could be a potential solution here but it's still a tough issue.

The best way I’ve noticed (or at least what worked for me) is time. It was just a realization I had after years of playing and listening to the same crack heads talk and COMPLAIN ABOUT THEIR LIVES 8 hours a day and staying up until 6 am because they live in Australia. I sold my entire pc gaming set up. I was video game free for 6 months. I felt the most free I ever had. Then I had something happen to me in real life that kinda put me down. Then I spent a ton of money buying a new set up. All immediately I was staying up late again and procrastinating and I stopped working out and started eating like crap again… so I sold it again and I’m never going back. Living in the real world completely is so much better than any video game. As for junk food… go get a burger from McDonald’s, take a bite, chew, and swallow. Then take a look at that burger really closely, then look at your own body in the mirror… and the. Imagine the torment you’re putting your body through. And how insignificant that burger looks. I know how easy it is to succumb to these addictions. I’m a marine guys. I can literally handle pretty much any real world situation and keep that discipline. But video games and junk food? Man is it hard. It just goes to show you how much science goes into these dopamine stimulating things. It’s really really bad. Get out of these habits as soon as possible!

Hate is a strong word that should only be reserved for corrupt politicians and literal human monsters who do nothing but make the world a darker place.
Normal people with stable lives are allowed to entertain themselves with games and movies and shows. Anything can waste someone’s time and life if they’re not careful. Normal gamers didn’t do anything wrong to make you hate them. In fact, I consider it a sin to hate another human being who is just trying to get by and live their life.
Even people who do have gaming addictions shouldn’t be hated, they just need to be guided in the right direction for a better life.

  • @Horace.Heartfelt
    @Horace.Heartfelt 2 года назад +40

Be careful with your hate. It’s great to have passion and drive but if it’s purely fueled by hate it does not matter; all you are going to see is red. One, you will not truly know if you are right or wrong, but more importantly you will never convince someone who disagrees with you (which are the ones you made this video for). If you truly wish to make a good argument to convince these people you have to set your hate aside. Otherwise, you will continue to only convince people who are already on your side.
I would also suggest staying away from saying all people from the group are the same (that’s simply not true for any group), and not telling the opposition to shut the fuck up with there counter arguments if you still truly wish to convince them you are right.

If you want to improve your mind, but also like your games, one idea I suggest is writing for a while after a gaming session. Write about what hijinks you pulled, what happened in the story that session, what your character's thoughts are (works well with RPGs), anything. A paragraph or two at least after each session.
I used to do this after playing Skyrim as a kind of creative project for my character, and personally ended up getting addicted to the writing over gaming. While I myself agree with most of Hamza's thoughts here, I'm not going to tell anyone to stop gaming. However if you're struggling with reading or finding another hobby to really sharpen your mind, writing about your sessions may help. And don't worry if it's shit, nobody needs to see it. Just be creative for a while.

    3) Team Fortress 2, for it's charming graphics, funny bugs, funny people, engaging fights and interesting weapons.
This said I know I shouldn't be playing them, but they remind me of good times. I'll be honest, since I started self improvement my life has become kind of gray, NOT BECAUSE OF IT THO. Everyones online experience is different.
The people I play games with are successful in their lives, and are defo not losers, and we always have deep conversations on discord either while playing or after we’ve stopped playing, and exchange really good information just as we would in the real life.
Imo, there’s nothing wrong with playing video games especially if you’re in a good place in life. It definitely helps to stop playing for a while to get your shit in order, but once you have your shit in order, it’s ok to play games, just not extensively.
play video games, just responsibly whilst being considerate of real life objectives, if you can’t don’t play, until you can, it’s what I did, and I have no regrets.

Saying he could've been a surgeon or anything with all the time he wasted on getting good at perfecting Captain Falcon. I honestly don't stomach videogames anymore and having a hard time playing for longer than 15 minutes. Weak argument. It is ironic how your name is “WAKE UP CALL”, but you clearly want to keep your eyes closed.
An addict of any harmful thing such as drugs or video games, can also say they are happy with it.
Why? They are addicts. Controlled by their addiction. You are controlled. You are in a cage. You are a loser.

I agree that addiction to video games is terrible and can only lead to misery and lack of self worth. This video got me thinking about my past when I used to play video games, even from a young age and I can’t say I regret it fully. I used to play these historical strategy games and while I did waste countless hours on them and probably miss out on a lot of opportunities, it kindled an interest in history that I am very grateful for, as history remains one of my biggest passions to this date and has lead to me reading about countless stories of leadership and ingenuity and how these great people achieved such things.

No bad habit is ever fine, that's like saying if you're not addicted you can wank once a while or smoke, unless you admit that you're intentionally doing instant gratification then you are just coping, because if you could click a button and instead of feeling the urge to play videogames you had an urge to make a business then you'd choose the business, so just admit that you have an addiction and that your trying to cut it down, because this pride is literally blinding you from growth.
