(cont.) I'm still overweight. But I went from 314lbs to 275lbs, and I'm still losing. For me, the goal isn't weight loss, but healthiness. This woman is very accurate, from my experience. Life became better for me when I stopped letting other people's opinions about my weight matter. These people don't ACTUALLY care about my health. They're not saying negative things to me in order to uplift or actually HELP me. Realizing that is what has changed my view and made this all a lot easier.

I seem to be an outlier here but I think the woman is exactly right. Obese people for the most part are not that way because they can't use a calculator to count calories. Some people eat for emotional reasons, some people choose processed foods for different reasons including convenience, limited resources etc. and some people suffer from addictive type symptoms (not necessarily as a substance but as brain and comfort leading to compulsions). Treating each over weight person as a category and not an individual will never work across broad categories. Each person must figure out why they continue to eat the wrong foods and address those issues. Easy to write but not always easy to do. One size fits all prescriptions make the diet companies rich but don't help the over weight and in the end we all pay for it with higher health care costs. I have tackled this for decades and recently have had some success by tackling the psychological reasons that I eat. It isn't easy but it is the only way for many of us

+Brian Lieberth Of course she is right from a phsycological perspective. Eating less and exercising more takes more than just will power but that is the literal method that must happen in order to lose weight. Ideally we do it in such a way that it doesn't feel like dieting but at the end of the day we have to consume less calories than we burn in order to lose weight.

    • @brianlieberth
      @brianlieberth 8 лет назад +18

+Chris Babb The entire point of the video was psychological. Many people who have had long term struggles with obesity know how to lose weight. We have done it multiple times. The big point I was making is that each of us has our own story. For some it may be abuse, others just self confidence issues or loneliness. But to get to the point of consistently eating what we need to fuel our bodies we have to get to a point where we can live with the psychological issues. This of course isn't 100% but in a large number of the folks who are long term morbidly obese there is a psychological component and gurus constantly telling us just eat less and move more doesn't help, and in the end just makes the problems worse.

The second had a passion for dance, had family support and she eat the family buffet with many healthy foods on it. She lost the most weight and met the goal for her wedding.

The ONLY thing that worked for me (tried everything) was to learn to eat intuitively. I'm not skinny but have been stable for several years. If I want a slice of pizza I have one. If I want cake I have it. I dont have to horde food or eat a lot today because tomorrow I'm on my diet. How I eat IS my diet. The paradox I found is that once you stop labeling foods as good vs bad you remove the guilt or shame once previously attached and therefore can eat like a thin person. Eat when hungry stop when full. It sounds simple because it is BUT it took me over 40 years to conclude that weight loss diets are the disease not the cure. The cure is to stop dieting.

OK, I don't dispute that this happened for you, but I want to add some crucial nuance here: Intuitive Eating is absolutely not a weight loss program. The authors, Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tribole have talked about this adnauseam. Depending on your personal biology (e.g. where your current weight sits in accordance with your unique set point range), some people will lose, gain or stay the same when they start to practice intuitive eating.

This is quite true. I've dealt with being overweight for most of my life. People seem to forget that human beings have brains, and our minds/thoughts/beliefs play a role in everything we do. The only way I could lose weight was to actually start to love myself as I was - with the weight on. I had to stop caring what anyone thought. I didn't tell anyone I was trying to lose weight. And I had to LOVE MYSELF even with the weight, which is really difficult to do in current society.

That is not your fault, instead of keep judging it and make your emotion worse, try to understand and please it in a healthy and positive way. I think it's the key to deal with everything in this judgmental life not only weight loss, I always say "It's ok and It's normal to feel like that" whenever I feel desperate and negative, It's so relieving. • @LulzRoyce
    @LulzRoyce 10 лет назад +400

You don't need a 10 minute video about this. As a 6-year bodybuilder let me explain the simplicity here. Let's say you weight 200lbs (just to make numbers easy), your body needs, hypothetically let's say, 2500 calories to maintain that weight. As you eat less and less, your weight will drop, but so will your required calories. So if you go from 200lbs to 160lbs, your caloric requirements will plummet down to 2000 if not less. This is more problematic with women, because their requirement levels drop to 1000-1200 at that point. So you have to continually eat less and less as you lose weight - THIS IS NOT A GOOD WEIGHT LOSS STRATEGY. This is why people pack that weight back on, because their metabolism is dormant with this starvation strategy. The key, is not cardio alone, but weight lifting. Building muscle adds lean body mass to your frame, increases your weight (not fat) thus increasing your metabolism and the amount of food you have to eat. So you lean out, and are able to eat more and more as you get leaner because the more muscle you build the more calories your body needs to support it. Just like a big truck burning more fuel vs a small honda civic. It's very simple guys (and gals), starvation is not how you stay lean and fit. Build a stronger you, not a weak and deprived version of yourself. Ladies, you do not even have the testosterone to look "bulky" so do not worry about looking too muscular, you can build plenty of muscle without it showing much. You will be able to eat like a normal human, enjoy life and look great.

Yep, you are right, LulzRoyce... it's totally true. Weight training is a much easier way to lose weight than monkeying around with only endurance cardio exercises.
One thing to be careful of, however, is not stretching enough. With weight training, depending on how one goes about it, the stretching is key to keeping loose and limber, instead of musclebound and too tight. One way to ensure you don't get overly tight muscles is to train groups of muscles, instead of only isolating one muscle at a time. It's more natural, anyway. And, by using freeweights, we can ensure we're not just overloading muscles in one plane (like hinges) , we can make sure our muscles work in many diff. planes simultaneously, so we have functional strength and synergy with diff. muscle groups (that are designed to work together and be strong from tip to tip, not just in the middle of a muscle, not just the "belly" of each muscle, but all muscles all at once).

    • @mumpygumboo8554

    • @StygianStyle
      @StygianStyle 9 лет назад +3

+LulzRoyce In order to build muscle mass you have to consume more calories than you burn. You can't create muscle directly from stored fat. So people that are trying to lose weight won't really benefit from trying to build more muscle. Resistance training, on the other hand, has been known to have benefits to the metabolism other than increasing muscle mass, and is a good type of exercise to do while losing weight.

I've been dealing with depression for years and it always helped me to write things down. So whereas I might not be able to understand your circumstances, maybe it will help you understand yourself. I learned that a friend of mine had been going through the same thing, so she taught me this; because of her low self esteem she decided to write every night. So each night she writes 9 things she is thankful for, whether she means it or not, but 9 things that she should feel thankful for (like: having a body that functions (mostly), being able to cook your own food, have access to water) simple things that you might not even really think about, but still matter to your existence. She's been doing this for a year now and each day she would add one other thing to the list: something she wanted to achieve. Something she felt like she wouldn't be able to do, yet she was willing to give it at least a THOUGHT and put in consideration "maybe I can do this". Now, a year later she's lost over 50 pounds. Mainly due to the fact that she simply wrote down a number of things she was thankful for and added one thing she wanted to achieve. Whether short term or long term.
You got this. Write that down. "I got this" and write it as many times as you need to believe that you actually got it in you to make changes.
It's hard. It might not get easier for a long time, but it's gonna be worth it.
It took her a year to lose 50lbs. But it took her almost 30 years to realise she was able to do such things. It took me over 10 years to realise I was worth more than what I was doing for myself, which was nothing, by writing about it.
Take good care of yourself, stay safe and do what works for you! You got this.

Hi, what do you mean ?
Like specifically for you, do you believe freewill exists but is hard to practice ?
Or that it doesn’t exist and therefore discipline etc is impossible ?
I’m just curious, I’m curious what type of videos and content you are seeking ??
If you feel like sharing , expanding about that here I’m really interested.
Personally I believe freewill exists and I try to exercise it in my life but It can be a challenge.
The commenter who suggests journaling makes a good point. I do not value positive psychology, it’s over rated feel good nonsense but journaling is very beneficial for a number of reasons.
To gain motivation and make changes the single most important aspect is to create a tension of opposites.
If you journal over a long period, you’ll get pissed off at the repetitiveness of your own script.
A tension of opposites develops and eventually one says F&*K this, I’m going to change this.
You need to create that negative opposite, that you are moving away from and that will push you over the line and into the new pattern. If you slip backwards, you just keep repeating the journaling and you will change the pattern if you keep trying.
Positivity and a little desire for something never motivates people. When the negative is big enough people make changes. You don’t need to berate or abuse yourself, it is an artful negotiation. Athletes and truly, successful people all practice this tension of opposites game. If you do not believe in freewill, you will struggle.
      Hope this is useful.

@@Minivaaaaal, hello and thank you for your comment! I didn't see this sooner or I would have replied earlier.
Your friend's idea is awesome! I too, have given myself to journaling at least every other day and I committed myself to writing down more positive things in general and to begin more grateful. Honestly, I got tired of my own negative dialogue and began to REALLY question why I thought and felt the way I did. An I got a great therapist and really started "doing the work". I have lost about 40 pounds this year and I am "proud" of myself, but still have work to do. I will remember the 9 gratitudes and 1 goal idea and work to incorporate it. I'm still working on being consistent and for about a 4-6 weeks now I've been doing pretty well! An I pause to be grateful for that. I believe one of the greatest tragedies of human existence is that it IS so easy to forget the blessings of one's life while at the same time being almost hopelessly weighed down by the negative. Perhaps this is one of the greatest "sins" too.

Pay attention when you eat-how you eat. How big are your bites? How fast do you eat? Do you eat and do other things? You’ll eat less naturally if you pay attention to your body’s subtle cues.

  • @Antony_Oscar
    @Antony_Oscar 10 лет назад +15

I totally agree with this. I lost almost 30 pounds during an 8 month period, but gained like 10 pounds of it back afterwards (1 year period) because I didn't really think of the reasons why I was eating so much in the first place and slowly got back to my old eating habits. I did realise I actually enjoy exercise though, so now it's a bit easier for me to be active.
Now I've realised I eat a lot when I'm bored, and also I've gotten used to just buying stuff like crisps and sweets for the weekend when I don't always even feel like eating anything special, but buy them out of habit and then end up eating them since I've bought them. Also sometimes when there's food around (baked goods, etc) or the opportunity to buy something special that I don't eat every day, I get an irrational urge to eat it in case it will be gone forever. So these are the kinds of things people should think on before they try to lose weight, because unless you understand why you eat more than you need you can never truly lose all of the weight because it will keep coming back.

There is a point in all this. When it comes to wanting to lose weight, or even anything you want to do in life, it is not just about what is required to achieve those results, it stems from "why " you are wanting to do it in the first place. I am not talking about "oh i want to lose weight to fit into smaller jeans or because I want to look good for my wedding". Those are incentives, not reasons. You have to look deep inside and be honest with yourself, because at the end of the day, you are doing it for yourself, no one else. If you fall, don't punish yourself, that is counterproductive. Find out why you fell, what to do to circumvent it from happening the next time, and get back on track.
Everyone is different. Different mindsets. Different personalities. Different ways they have been brought up. Different environments. There isn't a "once size fits all" solution, and no, just "eating less" does not genuinely work. It might for some people who might have a point to prove, but once it has been done, over the next year or two, you will find that they have put all that weight back on, PLUS more, because of the very fact that this willingness to do something did not stem from being honest with yourself.
As mentioned, its the same with everything. Why did you choose to work where you work now? Why did you choose to go to school where you are attending now? Why do you take the mode of transport that you do? Yes, i know that external parties can influence you, but at the end of the day, you are responsible for making those choices, and the difference between someone being happy and someone being unhappy is understanding WHY they are doing it and if it is of benefit of themselves, or for others.
Focus on YOU. Only YOU can truly make yourself happy. You think others are focusing on you because they care about you? Think again. Others might focus on you to get away from their own problems, and some of them are so psychologically fucked up that they will try to bring you down with them so they do not feel as bad.
    Live for yourself.

But the only reason I could do all of that was because I felt good about myself.
This year though I got more depressed (I already was and still am) and anxiety had the best of me, I hated myself. I didn't exercise anymore and ate junk food because the only thought I had in my head was "FOOD FOOD FOOD"... I gained some weight, then lost more, and later I gained 9 kg in just three months.

Her premise is right on. There is a psychology to it. "Weight loss" is based on a single data point, the number on the scale. Stop focusing on that and start paying attention to how you FEEL when you eat certain things; before, during and after. Write it down so you can find the patterns to the psychological triggers that make you crave whatever you are craving. The work on those. Also, take into consideration that maybe that craving is your body telling you that you need a certain nutrient. If you deny the craving and substitute some "diet" cardboard food for it, you deny what your body needs and it forces you to eat the whole box of "diet" whatever and half your groceries in one sitting in the hope that it will get what it needs. If you had simply given your body what it wanted, you would have saved calories, embarrassment and depression.

8:08 sums it up quite well. Here my own summary:
    - Consume fewer calories than your body needs (research and do an informed estimation).
    - Consume them in a way you could live with for several years or even the rest of your life.
    - Don't cheat yourself! And get up after setbacks!
    - Bonus goal: Get used to exercise and make it a habbit.
Lost 130 pounds by that and holding my new weight.
The thing is, all obese people have a reasen why they did consume more calories than they need. To solve this problem, you need the personal approach.

(cont.) I used Metta meditation - it teaches you how to love others. It means "loving-kindness." But the first step in Metta is to start learning to love yourself. I did visualizations where I would talk to my reflection. It was strange at first, and I felt stupid saying, "I love you, exactly as you are," and other things. At some point, though, I thought, "Would I treat my daughter or anyone else I love like I treat myself?" and it was a huge wake-up call.

The title is accurate - there is clearly a psychological component to the rational of losing weight. It is ALL psychological. Once you get to that psychological place, with the right knowledge about weight loss, you WILL lose weight. DETERMINATION to lose weight to reach a GOAL and a REASON for the GOAL are keys. So, if someone's weight is causing health problems, their determination will be stronger if they have a Reason and a goal for losing the weight.

Focusing on the weight loss is not effective, because psychologically, that is focusing on a negative. Focusing on getting healthier is proven to be more psychologically sound and effective. Ignore the scale and pay attention to how you FEEL will be much more effective. Because, let's face it. The scale is a single data point and any scientist can tell you, a single data point can be misleading.

You completely missed the point of the talk. The point that she was making is that weight loss is about eating less and exercising more, but that there is more to it than that. You can't just tell yourself, "I'm going to eat less and exercise more." You have to rearrange your life to be centered around activities and foods that you LIKE that just happen to be healthy activities and foods. The increase of obesity has to do with lifestyle not lack of will power to just choose to eat less.

  • @sunnyfunny2264
    @sunnyfunny2264 8 лет назад +3

From my own weight loss experience, diets never really work. Even if it worked, it will only be a short term result. You will always gain back the weight you've lost. When you're dieting, you restrict your calories intake, can't eat the junk food you love etc. Once your weight loss reaches a plateau, you feel depressed and have the tendency to binge on those food you refused to eat while dieting. And you will gain back the weight. For a long term result, I recommend ppl to NOT eat around the clock, but notice your hunger cues. You can eat anything you want, but only eat when you're truly hungry. Use a hunger scale, 3 means you're starting to feel the hunger, 7 means you're full(you can feel theres food in your stomach). Eat slowly (20 min at least). I can assure once you start to understand hunger & satiety, you will lose weight in a slow but definite way. Just have to be patient and wait for the result. Take small meals a day. Key is: eat only when you're hungry (level 3), stop eating once you're full (level 7). Dont stuff youself anymore once you're full, you wont need that excess nutrients anyway. This method causes no pain, you can eat WHATEVER you want (but I recommend you to eat meal instead of eating junk foods). Before you eat, ask yourself "Am I hungry?" & "Am I at level 3?". This is the key to weight loss.

    • @sunnyfunny2264
      @sunnyfunny2264 8 лет назад +1

Furthermore, this method will not make you feel anxious when you're around food. Because once you know you're full, you will stop eating and wait for the next hunger cue to kick in. Even if there's a dozen of donuts in front of you, you won't feel the urge to eat because you know that you're full. If you're full and still continue to eat that dozen of donuts, you're eating mindlessly & emotionally. You won't enjoy it as much as when you eat out of hunger! When you go beyond level 7, you start to feel bloated and lazy, your energy level ironically will be lower and you will feel more lethargic than if you just stop at level 7. So if you're trying to put off weight, please stop dieting. Start to eat anything you want and trust your own body signals. Babies cry when they're hungry and stop when they're full. As we grow up, we seem to lose that innate ability & ignore our hunger signals. We tend to eat beyond level 7 (can be emotional eating, or influenced by our environments, buffet, party etc.). So if you're trying to lose weight in a healthy way, not feeling guilty, stop classifying food as good or bad, high fat, low fat, you will slowly lose weight. TRUST you body's response.

    1) Binge eating is an eating disorder, so it's not rectified so easily. 2) The reason you don't have good data on "what the best dieters are doing" is because we can't study what we can't produce: lasting weight loss. Perhaps the focus on weight itself is misguided, and rather we should focus on healthy behaviors that we know improve our wellbeing regardless of whether weight is lost.

Health first. A healthy diet of quality foods and a reasonable amount of exercise, combined with a realization that it is a lifestyle, not a diet. Add to that the knowledge that it doesn't happen overnight and you could very well have a recipe for getting the healthy body you want. There are those who know that genetics play a role in body types and accept that they are not going to be skinny, just healthy and that acceptance is a good thing. How one feels is more important than the mirror. I do realize that this is easy to say and not so easily done but if it was easy, we wouldn't have the obesity problems we have in the western cultures.

Overeating is caused by selfishness. It's an attempt to make yourself fulfilled. It's an easy trap to fall into. The solution is to stop trying to fulfill yourself and to go fulfill someone else. You'll never feel fulfilled until you forget about yourself and focus on the needs of others. It's by caring for others that you feel fulfilled, because you will never feel fulfilled until at least someone you love needs you. Your best bet is to rescue some dogs from the pound and give them a great life.

cat thornberg I'm sorry you got caught up in some crazy cult, but my theory still stands.
We overeat to compensate for the lack of fulfillment we are getting from life. If we do find and dive into a truly worthwhile activity, we forget all about stuffing ourselves, because the activity we are involved in gives us real fulfillment.
Nearly everyone has found themselves in some sort of project that was so exciting that they forgot all about eating. Let's face it, we eat because there's nothing better to do. The key then is to find something more fulfilling than food.
Food is not that fulfilling to begin with. We can stuff ourselves and still feel sad, empty, unfulfilled, wanting, etc. Stuffing ourselves does not work, because it doesn't satisfy our real need. Our real need is to share. Our real need is to be giving. Our real need is to be doing something truly important. Our real need is to be touching the lives of those we value. We need that to feel fulfilled.
Look at the people who live with a sparkle in their eyes. They aren't trying to fulfill themselves. They but live to be of service. They are the teachers, volunteers, youth counselors, etc. They do the jobs that reach out and touch lives. They are the heros.
Now it doesn't mean that if you do one of these jobs that you will be fulfilled, because the key isn't in what you are doing, but how you are doing it. You have to do it out of love, and out of service. AND you have to believe in what you are doing. You can go through hell taking care of a baby and yet be totally fulfilled, because you feel the baby is precious and that your work then is very important. But if you are taking care of a baby killer, the joy will not be there, because it's not what you do so much, but for whom you are doing it for.
You have to love, or at least like, who you are trying to help, otherwise you'll not feel fulfilled. You will not feel like you are doing something worthwhile. If you don't like people or animals, you might as well just go ahead and keep eating, because being a hero to those you don't like is anything but rewarding.
So you have to love people. Well, how do you do that? You could take years of psychology courses and finally come to realize that people aren't bad, they are actually wonderful, but simply damaged. You could also go on a spiritual journey. It's much faster. My journey was with A Course In Miracles. It was through this book that I quickly learned that people are wonderful and that the only real joy in life comes from being of service.
I didn't just learn people are wonderful, I experienced it. I saw it. I fell in love with everyone I met. Because I could see the truth about them. I could see past their fears to the true beauty within them.
People are beautiful. Everyone is. But like a feral cat, people have serious fears that make them act as if they were evil. People are not evil. They are scared. Once you learn to see that people are not evil monsters, but simply frightened children, we can love them.
Look at Nancy Grace. She seems like just a horrible woman. She's got nothing good to say about anyone. But look again and see that her problem is not that she's a bitch, but that she's frightened. The world terrifies her. She doesn't need to be bitch slapped. She needs to be comforted and told that everything is alright.
We do not live in a world of evil. We live in a world of fear. People are frightened. That's why most people are so aggressive and defensive. They are like feral cats that are hungry and desperate. A feral cat is not evil. It's not a naughty cat. It's simply hungry and scared.
We can all fall into the trap of being hungry and scared. And we will behave selfishly and viciously if we do. But see it for what it is. It's pain and fear. Not evil.
The Good News is that there is nothing to fear! Oh, physically, yes, to some degree. But not on any other level. Our soul, spirit, heart and mind have nothing real to fear. That may be hard to believe, but it's only because we have always been taught and thought otherwise. The world we live in teaches us to be afraid. The world is wrong. This is why so many are so sad, because they believe the world is cruel and dangerous. Well, it's not. It's not dangerous at all. The truth is that you can and will survive anything. The only thing that is killing you is your belief you can't.
Happiness does not come from finding protection from dangers, but from finding out that you can survive anything. It actually great fun to find this out. We will look forward to the next terrifying moment to see how we will respond.
I was a leasing agent for a large apartment complex. Talk about drama! It never stopped. So, one day this huge fellow comes busting in the door and starts calling us all kinds of names, because we didn't fix his apartment. The guy was furious. In the past I would have fought the guy or ran out the door. I would have at least been insulted and defended myself. But I didn't do any of those things. Instead I saw the truth of the situation and said, "Wow! You are really upset. Have a seat, let me get you a cold bottle of water and then help you." That was it. I had this giant monster instantly calmed and relaxed. I had no need to be defensive. I wasn't insulted. I just saw a big baby walk in the door screaming for his bottle. So I gave him one! lol
In A Course In MIracles we not only learn that we are invulnerable. But we are given miracles to help us see. Sometimes it's easy to see the baby just needs a bottle. Other times we need a lot of help to see. A miracle is a spiritual aid to help see. That's all it is. It's the grace of God that helps us to understand a situation. With miracles, no situation is frightening. We could be nailed to a cross and be joyful, as Jesus was. There's simply nothing that can steal our joy. Because with miracles, we don't see ourselves as weaklings needing help, but as the innocent and invulnerable children of God that we are. Not on a physical level, but on every other level.
To talk about the physical level is a whole nother subject. Because bodies can attack bodies. Bodies are destructible. But A Course In Miracles will ask you why do you even want a body. It gives us nothing we truly want. It does not gives us life. It's the Spirit that gives us Life. And the Spirit cannot die.
Here's the book to read.....send no money to anyone ever. There are no leaders, churches, etc. No one needs money. This is all from the heart.

To those who are saying that calories in calories out is correct, it is not. It depends on your stress hormone levels. If you have too few calories, you can trick your metabolism into thinking that you are in a starvation mode. I have experienced this myself and watched a friend who was both anorexic and worked out for over two hours a day. It got to the point where her body clung to every calorie would be its last. It is far more complex than simple calorie counting.

Yes, 1 divided by 24 hours does mean it is only 4% of a calendar day, but it doesn't represent what your percentage is trying to communicate. Your conclusion is that working out is only a small percentage of your day so you have little excuse, but you are comparing against time that cannot be used for activity. Let's say a person sleeps for 7 hours and works for 8 hours in a day. These blocks of time are not available for working out. In this case a 1-hour workout is 11% of your free time.

Losing weight is something that everyone believe is possible through exercising and eating right but it is not that simple. I fully agree with Anokhina that this strategy really doesn't work because there is always that weight, that if it is lost, that gradually comes back. Looking at things that we can do to counteract this, it is important pay attention to the psychological aspect of eating. Finding what we like to eat and controlling ourselves is very important. However, we have a certain amount of self control. Forcing ourselves to do something that we hate is not going to be beneficial and it is important to change habits if there is an expectation of weight loss. Thought suppression is something that comes into play as well and it is really taxing on the mentality of a person. I agree that it is important to look at the way we think and behave and to treat the body well and improve our life to lose weight. Eat the foods we like, and work to schedule your weight loss around you.
As Alisa explains however, there are things like weight loss counseling that give people support to help them.
Like Alisa says, it is not so much about losing the weight, but thinking differently. It is far more important to get the mind on the right track before we can even come close to losing the weight that we want to lose.

Great talk. One thing about excercise/gym: before you start get a heart rate monitor! Then start exercising NOT EXCEEDING 130 BPM!!! Your body hates going over 130 and this will make YOU hate the exercise too. Unfortunately many gym trainer will tell to to push really hard. Don't listen to them until you had at least 6months of regular , i.e. 2x a week excercise at 130

ScottStorm1 Jemaine Clement You are missing the point! Someone starting out to exercise needs to start at low HR otherwise they will hate the experience and associate negatively with exercise. That´s why everybody starts Gym in January going full monty on their hearts and then stop by February. If you start low, measured by low heartrate, ie 130 bpm, you ensure that you associate positively with the exercise keeping you going long term. Then you can ramp up as much as you like

The whole point of this video is that there are whole countries where fat people are rare, and the reason why is not that they have more self-control, but that the mindset with regards to food is different. I lived in France and slim girls there don't restrain themselves every day talking about 'eating healthy' or 'eating less'. Instead they eat high quality, unprocessed food, which is tasty, high in nutrients and in fat, which is filling. This food is satisfying and pleasurable enough that they don't have to binge on horrible junk food to feel full. The notion should be on quality of food, not on how much you need to punish yourself.

There also is just a huge misunderstanding about nutrition. Psychology is definitely a factor. But the common belief among Americans and a lot of people abroad is that fat makes you fat. Sure, processed, unnatural fats like vegetable oils (soybean, canola, cottonseed, rapeseed, that only entered the human diet in the 20th century, as well as refined carbohydrates and artificial food additives, plastics, etc.) will make you fat. That's clear. What doesn't make you fat? Natural animal fats that have a fatty acid profile more similar to our body's composition, meaning close to equal parts saturated and monounsaturated, with a small amount of essential polyunsaturated fats. The brain and nervous system is largely fat, and that is primarily saturated and in lesser amounts monounsaturated/polyunsaturated. The studies that link saturated fat to disease are baseless since they typically lump them together with trans fats and do not take into account whether the fats are from pastured or conventionally-raised animals. Adding back in the fat nourishes you, fills you up, and it tastes incredible, and it's what we used to eat: butter, lard, tallow, all very stable in cooking and that do not oxidize under high heat, thus preventing them from becoming free radicals in the body and causing damage (exactly what vegetable oils are: rancid oils that act as free radicals due to the refining process).

This was when I was documenting every single calorie going in and every single exercise I was doing. I talked to an endocrinologist about it, but she didn't believe me. recognize, remove and replace. :) i.e. you like pizza but it is high in fat = recognize. you do not buy the high fat pizza = remove. You make your own healthy pizza knowing exactly what is in and on it and enjoy, not feeling hard done by,= replace. This really works with all foods. Most diets just recognize and remove and do not replace, this does not work, you just feel bad and like your having to give up everything.

The answer to losing weight is losing the desire to eat too much.
The scientific answer would be as she describes, eat less, do more excercise. Which is behavior which follows after losing the desire to eat too much.

And at least once a week a small piece around 50gramm sweet . Rest is done by time and even if some week you loose only 100gramm just buy the same amount Butter then you see actually how much that is .

After I lost 60 pounds, 220 to to 160, I thought I would feel like a whole different person and be much more happier. Truth is that in the beginning I was but then I was still getting grief for failing to meet the weight expectation for my height at 5'7 to be 140. So though I tried my best to get to140 I never did. I actually gained back 20. I weight 180 now and have for a couple years but I feel as if I weigh 220 again. I cook my own healthy, organic meals daily, exercise and still I am driven nuts and even into depression that though I lost all that weight, I am still not that 140. And honestly I am so over what else I could possibly do besides what I am already doing to loose weight. It is really is a psychological battle.

Hey Jennifer, hang in there! In my opinion, it's never about what the scale reads. I actually made a video last night about it, and I talk about it sometimes. If I may offer advice- it's usually valuable to focus on how you want to feel mentally, emotionally, and in terms of confidence and self-efficacy.
I.e. what does weighing 220 actually FEEL like, in your experience? It's not like the floor physically sinks under your feet at that weight. And what does weighing 140 pounds mean to you? How do you imagine it will feel?
You can feel how you wish at any weight you decide to target,and/or any weight your body tries to balance you. Hitting your target weight is not a permission slip; you'll just hit it and be like... ok? There's some therapy game that can help, but it can also be a matter of asking the right questions to expand the perspective. Hope that helps =)

Me, and every other person I know who's obsessed with fitness says this all the time.. It's not about losing weight, it's not about dieting, it's about getting obsessed with health and fitness. The way you look is a by-product of that behaviour. That's why people say that being 'fit' is a lifestyle and not an action. You need will-power for actions, but lifestyles are habits. You are what you repeatedly do.

  • @dy992

Yes there's more to weight loss than calories in/out.
But I was hoping someone with a PhD would tell me more than what's already known by everyone: "it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle". No big discovery there.
But I guess where a lot of people go WRONG is in making food a priority, an obsession. Sure, meal prep & calorie counting can help some, but for the others who get fixated on what to eat, when, why, how many calories etc. it just ends up becoming a disaster.

There is more than one way to work out or lose weight/get healthy. Doing 100 crunches per day does't mean you'll look the way you want, especially if you hate doing them. Dance instead and get the same results! People need to be motivated to keep going, and our psychology affects our attitude which affects how successful we are in this endeavor.

I have a tendency toward IBS and gastritis and this really helped because, I think, the volume to process was much smaller.

The only fad diet I will 100% stand behind is KETO. And I think the reason it worked for me (lost 50 lbs) is exactly what she said. Keto allowed me to still eat the foods I loved, I just had to be more mindful about it. I could still eat a burger, I just used my own bread as the bun. I had a super easy keto pancake recipe that I would make it in the mornings for breakfast, it was still absolutely delicious. I could still have tea and biscuits (my biggest weakness), I just had to make sugar free biscuits or buy sugar free chocolates (which believe it or not, there are so many sugar free desserts out there now that taste just as good as normal ones.) This worked for me because I really didn’t have to sacrifice anything, I just had to tweak it a bit. It’s the only “diet” I ever made any solid progress on.

All this is good and fine, and perhaps for some the overeating is a mental thing. For me, I think it is physiological, and through cooking my own food for 6 years I have found it is much easier to not overeat if I do some things. This may not be everyone's problems, but this works for me.
I have found that if I just make sure to not eat too much glutamate, my appetite is less. Just cooking from scratch gives a really great start to this as premade food generally has a lot of glutamate added to it. But I went a big further and use pastry flour for my cooking because it is lower in glutamate than most other flours. I actually initially cooked gluten free because my daughter was allergic to wheat, and that worked even better for reducing my appetite than pastry flour, but wheat is yummy, so when she got over her wheat allergy we added it back. When I first added flour back, I did not use pastry flour, and found myself gaining weight again, so then I got the idea of using pastry flour which stopped the weight gain.
There's a few common fopds I avoid, parmesan cheese and soy sauce. They are both very high in glutamate. I also go easy on some foods that are naturally high in glutamate like other cheeses, nuts, mushrooms, tomatoes, peas and beans. Meat is also high in glutamate, but it is balanced with high amounts of taurine, so I find that it does not stimulate my appetite. Glutamate and taurine work on opposite receptors in the body, so taurine signals your body in opposite ways than glutamate.
Anyway, I just like to let other people know about my way. For me it is a wonderfully easy way to control my weight compared to any other way I have tried before. My diet takes work to cook my food from scratch, but it doesn't take much will power. It just makes me less hungry.

She meant that losing weight isn't just as simple as eating less/exercising more. We can't force ourselves to eat ONLY food that are healthy but we hate. We must find a balance. We can't deprive ourselves from all the food that we like because it is basically punishing ourselves and we will become mentally exhausted in the long run and cave in. Yes, eating less will help you lose weight, but if you did it solely with eating only healthy food (some which you may dislike), depriving yourself from

a more appropriate issue centres on the psychology of weight gain, tackle the issues leading to obesity. Deprivation will figure in all 'diets', as over-eating or eating too many fatty foods is not healthy for a balanced intake. Lifestyle changes surely means not eating a ton of foods which your body does not need or cannot digest, ok if you don't like salads, find something else which gives you the same; piling your plate high is neither necessarily desirable or necessary to nourish our bodies. Easily understable and accessible dietary/lifestyle counselling is of course crucial, but also why are we gaining weight, tackling those issues to my mind would also be decisive. The issue of costs needs to be factored in, healthy food costs and takes time.

How did this person ever get a TED talk with such a flawed presentation. She categorically denies that weight loss can be attributed to "eating less and moving more", which is absolutely false. You DO lose weight if you eat less and move more. This is nutrition and exercise science 101. But then she uses that as the basis for her argument of maintaining weight after weight loss due to psychological issues. Her findings regarding changing habits are sound, but her denial of the basic principals of nutrition and then using that to build her argument are so flawed, it bears being pointed out. A better proposal would have been acknowledging the role that calorie restriction and exercise play in losing weight, but psychological issues may or may not play a role in maintaining that weight loss.

She quotes the study. Look it up. No nutrition scientist has uttered the phrase "calories in, calories out" in 50 years. That's what gym trainers tell you, but not doctors. So she quotes the study--In many studies, but that was a big one, they'd take a bunch of people, tell them there are 3500 calories in a pound, restrict their diet by 500 calories a day for a year, which by your mathematical definition means they should lose exactly 52.000 pounds. But the ones who kept to the diet still only averaged 15 lbs. Why? Because it's more complex than thin people pretend (as they pat themselves on the back for not being fat.)

Here's the problem. She keeps making the assumption that those who eat less do not lose weight without asking whether or not they are actually eating less. The fact is that if you actually eat less and exercise more you will absolutely lose weight, your body has no other choice. This is simple physics.
The problem is that we are really bad at keeping track of what we eat and ironnically she ignores the psychological factor that our brain uses to trick us into eating enough calories to maintain homeostasis. Finding a way to overcome these mechanisms is absolutely not easy and it is not simple but the physical process of losing weight is really that simple. I know that is the point she is trying to get across in a way but it is counterproductive tell people that eating less (less calories) won't work. She skirts over the massive amount of studies that track successful weight loss and have showed how calorie tracking, food choices and exercise contributes to weight loss.

+Wild Outdoor Living She's speaking from a long term perspective; yes of course anyone can lose weight by eating less and exercising more- but for how long are they going to maintain that?
That's the issue she's raising that we have all these expectations shoved in our faces: to have an INSANE amount of willpower, to completely ignore certain components that gives individuality (e.g favorite food) and to waste the short time we have on this Earth doing thing that one may hate (such as going to the gym). She's providing an alternative, more sustainable path to a happy, healthier you. :)

I agree that extreme dieting is not sustainable but trying to hide the actual mechanism from people isn't helpful. You have to have a deficit of some sort to lose any weight. How that is accomplished and how you sustain that is a completely seperate and far more complicated question.

All of us who argue it truly is about calories in/out say that bc we are actually observing it. To make it more complex you could say these things: 1) food manufacturers put too much corn syrup and added sugars into their products 2) people think dieting is temporary when it's actually a lifestyle change. So people don't want to be held accountable for eating fast food and buying food loaded with corn syrup and sugar. I guess the only solution is to force a giant tax on those foods and/or get them off the shelf/street corner. There are plenty of us, although the severe minority, who make choices not to eat that shit, to work out a lot, etc. The successful people understand sacrifices and dedication. You can be one of them, it's only up to you though.
I can only comment on myself but the only time I've been even a pound overweight was when I had thyroid cancer and it wasn't functioning. I got that taken care of and easily dropped the 20 or so lbs I had gained when my metabolism was failing. If you truly have a thyroid issue, you can go to the doctor and get your hormones tested and get on synthetic supplements if that is really the case. If not then stop making fucking excuses. During that time when I had those extra lbs, no, I didn't sit there and hate myself...I worked out harder than ever and busted my ass to stay in shape even while I was sick. Instead of beating yourself up in your head, beat yourself up physically and reap the rewards. Not to mention intense cardio releases endorphins, which improve mood. I feel incredible after I go running.
And this is a problem only cropping up for the first time in human history in the past 2-3 decades. There is NO WAY genetics changed so quickly in that time. It has to do with a shift in less physical activity, more food loaded with sugar, less nutrition education, all at the same time. If these binge eaters ate straight out of a garden, they wouldn't be obese.
