    I’m amazed Tess held it together for that long. Earlier in the show, the infection warning sign said that symptoms would start in about 15 minutes especially depending on where the bite was on the body. And in the first episode we see how fast the Adlers change after getting bitten. About the kiss scene, when Tess is outed as being infected, she steps forwards towards Joel, maybe looking for comfort, but of course he backs away. I really believe that Tess wanted one last kiss from Joel. So in a really messed up way, the fungus warps her mind, giving Tess that physical comfort she wanted but instead with the infected.

    I took the kiss to mean that the infected already knew she was one of them; the tendril kiss was an unexpected moment of connection for the cordyceps. The connection and the communication of the mycorrhizal network is a fascinating and terrifying thing.

    I think that the acting is more extraordinary than the context of the kiss. I don't think that it was bait to shoot the scene in this fashion because the first moment that needs to work is essentially the last moment that works anyway... But as far as the acting goes, I thought that her eyes spoke for the whole scene. The acting wasn't overdone, and we get the "This is the only way" speech without actually saying those words. Her eyes do this for us, and we get sort of a fulfillment as we see that her purpose has been actualized.

    It seems to me that there are different colonies of fungi. I think Tess her colony tried to expand to Joel when she reached out to him after saying she's infected. She could infect Joel by giving him a kiss.
    Tess getting kissed by that one infected could state the same thing. She was ignored by a dozen other infected because they knew she was infected, they could still see so they knew she was infected. This one infected showed interest in her, and all the others stopped ignoring her. He's probably some sort of leader of his colony and he knew/sensed she was not part of his colony.
    He might know she is without a colony, since the colony in the museum died of when Joel killed the remaining infected there. (Or maybe he just took her over because Tess hasn't turned completely.)
    This could also explain why there are zones in cities without infected. The colonies would leave a neutral zone in between them.

    One thing I don't see many people mentioning is the irony of the kiss, in that Tess' last moment is one of intimacy, but from entirely the wrong source, where just a minute before she implied that she loved Joel but he didn't love her back, or at least if he did, he didn't allow himself to express those feelings. So, perhaps the first pseudo-romantic intimacy freely given to her in who knows how long was from the antagonists of the series welcoming her in, but Joel was still so closed off that even the Infected were capable of showing her more affection than he was (at least "perceived" as affection; even if its intentions weren't romantic, it was still a weirdly gentle and kind of welcoming gesture). Which to me just made the whole thing that more sad. The look in her eyes at the end looked almost more sad than afraid to me which made me think she might have been thinking of Joel.

    I get the analysis from the podcast and this video and I see what they were trying to do. I don’t necessarily hate it but it does create a problem for me in that this is the first and most likely the last time we’ll see someone be treated by the infected in this way. As interesting as the kiss was, I think it being (most likely) a one off takes away for me. Why Tess? Why this instance? Everyone else is attacked and bitten, brutally. In that respect, it doesn’t make a great deal of sense

    • @MrAronymous
      @MrAronymous Год назад

      Tess was already bitten. She was already being taken over. The infected already recognized her as being infected. This 'kiss' was for the process to speed along. Which obviously worked since she instantly lost more and more of her willpower.

      @@MrAronymous Right, I get it but why? How many people have been bitten or are infected and will turn that aren’t kissed by another infected? My point is we’ve never seen this behaviour from the infected before and whilst I don’t know, I suspect won’t see it again. The writers put this in for all the reasons that have been explained and to bring some kind of juxtaposition to the moment of love and loss in one scene, I get it, but in reality it doesn’t make sense in context of the world. That’s the only issue I have with it… unless of course we see similar behaviour from the infected at some again. Somehow I doubt we will though.

    What would've made that lighter scene better is if instead of the lighter turning on and tess dropping it, it would skip it to the outside scene when joel and ellie escape and then the explosion. it wouldve given the scene almost as a sign that she gave up but in the end she pulled though. i still liked how the scene was done, but the sense of quick doubt we would feel if they offscreened it wouldve been cool.

    Their explanation is utter crap but I do like the intention of the scene.
    The infected aren't just zombies - they're being changed into a fungus, some sort of being. It's taking their humanity away in a human way. No other animal directly kisses like that. It's imitating humanity, almost mocking it or maybe trying to convey itself as comforting, when really it's overwriting your will.
    The fungus feels more alive now. It's not trying to love, it's trying to spread. It's trying to survive by spreading endlessly. When you think about it - when humanity dies out, the fungus loses. Without hosts, there's no survival..

    • @malekaius
      @malekaius Год назад

      Actually when they say the fungus is spread out underground as a network already, it kinda implies it doesn’t actually need humans. The goal is reproduction - not survival. It survives with or without humans. Humans just happen to be a very effective vector.

    Even though the reason as to why it was changed is valid I still just cant ignore the little details when there are so many good ones.
    There was one small detail that I personally didnt like:
    When Tess was looking for a map as to where the Fireflies were headed she knocks over a bunch of gas tanks as well as a container full of grenades. Why the hell does Joel not grab any of the grenades??? If the show writers are already gonna give Joel an AR then him grabbing some grenades shouldn't be out of the question.
    Going back onto the grenades, when Tess is trying to blow up the hoard and she realizes her lighter isn't working, why didnt she just grab a grenade and pull the pin. I mean she already spilled them all on the ground, just as she walked backwards and kept trying the lighter she couldve instead just grabbed a grenade and pulled the pin.
    To me it's not a big deal that small things like this happen, but when people out here are praising every single small change like its a good one I cant help but notice how its a shit one too. Overall episode 1 was 10/10 for me while episode 2 was a 6/10. I still am pretty hyped for the rest of the show too.

    I also saw that last scene as Tess looking the stalker right in the face, scarded that maybe that is what she is turning into, so scared she is flicking the lighter, but the process of turning is already happening while the stalker is getting closer. As they "kiss", she is scared and something in her fights to not turn into a stalker (also because this is the first episode we see clickers and stalkers up close) and finally she succeeds. They show slime mold in the intro, which to me depicts how something so intent on it's survival, can seemingly portray intelligence but to label it as emotion is a stretch. I think this is a worthy adaptation but can we not forget to be critical! Why is nobody talking about casting issues, I love Pedro, but for Joel? cmon... We needed someone like Nikolaj Waldau where you can see the subtle nuances of his acting with his eyes just like Joel.
