My kindergarten teacher was native american. I looked up to her greatly because she looked like me (im korean) and i am adopted by a caucasian family. She taught me to feel comfortable being different. I remember her and her husband would teach us how to grind spices with a mortar and pestle, and showed us what they wore, as well as brought their actual tipi to school and let us sit inside. I will always remember her fondly

Uhm every race struggles with poverty, I lived in a fucking tent at one point in my childhood because my drug addict father took our money and bought drugs. He's Native American BTW, I'm not because I look white as a ghost despite being blood related to him.
Meanwhile, I have a sister in law who got free college and a nice house she only had to pay $100 a month to live in from her tribe. I was never that lucky, and apparently she took it for granted too because she decided a life of drugs and crime was more important than getting a job and living a normal lifestyle with her kid.

I’m actually quite ashamed that I know basically nothing about indigenous culture. Not only the American one. We Swedes barely know anything at all about the people we slaughtered and drove away, the people who’s homes we took. A lot of Swedes don’t even know what The Sámi even are! This is nothing other than shameful and I wish that people could actually get educated through school about the cultures that we have repressed for centuries, and how we can do our best to include them

@Viktoria So you don’t think it’s time people are better educated instead of sticking to a racist system out great great great grandparents made which has hurt a lot of people?
I’m not saying that white people as individuals are bad, however I am saying that our system needs to change, in a LOT of ways.

In my social studies class we were learning about indigenous culture, and my classmates started taking about "Pohkhantis" and I may have slammed them with the actual indigenous culture knowledge, and some of the girls were saying they want to dress up as one for halloween. I may have been appalled and talked about the sacred meanings behind every single piece. My teacher was impressed and asked me why I knew so much and I said, "I know so much because my family is really close with indiginous men and women and every year my grandfather gets a dream catcher from a native tribe because he had taught one when he was a proffesor at a collage. But I also thought I was part indiginous so I am embraced it at the time when all my family though I was. But when it turned out that I wasn't I embraced the culture even more because they have gone through so much cultureal geniside all because of my ancestors didn't think they were 'good enough' so I'm righting those wrongs and I'm trying to give awarness about what actually happend to the men and women of the sacred native tribes. Not only that every summer I'd go down to were the Sandy Creek masacre happend and I'd find old arrow heads and arrows with the feathers that were made by the Chynne and Arapaho people and the leader of the conjoined tribes Black Kettle had led them into the battle and in that battle 70-500 natives died and those were mostly women and children. I only know so much about this because my mother grew up in Brandon wich is apart of the Kiowa County territory. But not just that my mother went to Towner for school wich that name is familliar because that is the town that had the bus masacre in the spring time winter storm. So maybe you guys shouldn't talk about being one and pick something else and maybe should learn about what actully happend because those two tribes that are very dear to me went through to much geniside in that day." So yeah thats about what I said.

In my english class some girls were so shocked when I told them about Pocahontas. We live in Finland, so the kids really don't know anything. They just thought it was an old Disney movie and nothing more. This conversation was just before Halloween and they wanted to dress and Disney princesses and one wanted to be Pocahontas. I told the entire class of 11 year olds the whole tale of what actually happened to Pocahontas and told them they should never dress as any native person because their sacred markings, symbols etc. aren't our costume and we don't have any right to them and we don't even know what they mean. Basically I told them that the native culture of any country is not our aesthetic, so leave it alone and don't even go there, because we have no right. One girl opened her mouth and said she is Sami (Nordic native) and she also wishes that natives wouldn't be treated as costumes.

@@billianaeyelash2047 if you read about pochahuantes in a history book you'll fine she was taken to Europe, was white washed meaning they made her a Christian and then of course died of disease. So ever time I see pochahuantes in the Disney movie I feel disgusted that they pained her being 'in love' with a white immigrant that colonized them.

@@ILHBM026 oh you meant forced yeah, but the history books still aren't getting things right, stick to learning about indigenous people with indigenous written articles
